"Natalia, quick! The medicine's in my bag!" Rose cried urgently.
I rushed over, unzipped her handbag, and rummaged through it. "What kind of medicine?"
"Green bottle! Two pills!" She leaned in and patted his cheek, trying to rouse him.
I found it, then unscrewed the cap and handed her two pills. Rose immediately slipped them into his mouth.
The maid brought over some warm water. Rose carefully helped Aiden swallow the pills, checked his pulse, and finally exhaled deeply in relief. Only then did my own heart begin to settle.
Rose took a deep breath and said calmly, "He needs complete bed rest now."
"Help me get Mr. Stuart to the guest room," I told those maids.
Once Aiden was in bed and they had cleared out, I turned to Rose, still shaken. "What the hell happened?"
"It's a side effect from acupuncture," Rose said in a clipped voice, like that was all she was willing to say. She gave me a searching look and asked, "Why was he even with you?"
"He showed up on his own," I said. "I didn't even know until the maid called."
A flicker of disappointment and frustration crossed her face, but she masked it quickly.
After a pause, she spoke in an even tone. "The Stuart family and I have done everything we can to help Aiden recover. Nothing has worked. Not long ago, he suddenly developed a high fever. While he was unconscious, he kept calling your name."
I pressed my lips together, not knowing what to say.
Rose didn't mind and continued, "After the fever broke, Aiden had brief lucid moments. Very brief. I remember he suddenly grabbed my hand and asked if you're safe. I didn't understand what he meant. Before I could say anything, he passed out again."
Her words brought back the memory of Aiden's odd behavior right before he passed out. I told her about it.
Rose paused, then gave a wry smile. "Perhaps, deep down, he's always felt you needed his protection. So even now, you're still the only one on his mind."
I was at a loss for words. But something just felt off.
Right before passing out, Aiden said someone dangerous was after me.
I couldn't help but wonder who he meant, and if he'd been trying to warn me. Or was it just fever talk?
Before I could think it through, the maid's voice called from downstairs. "Mrs. Madden, Dr. Johnson is here."
I headed downstairs and saw George, his medical kit slung over his shoulder and gold-rimmed glasses on his nose. Then I realized he was here for my follow-up.
"I thought you'd be too busy taking care of Clarissa," I said coldly. "So, Dr. Johnson, are you here for my checkup or to interrogate me?"
George was just another one of Clarissa's people to me now, and he wasn't welcome here.
Unfazed, he set down his kit and started setting up the wrist rest. "I treat all my patients the same, Mrs. Madden. If you'd rather not see me, we can get this over with quickly."
I hadn't expected someone that by-the-book to care this much about professionalism.
I had no choice but to sit down and let him take my pulse.
After a moment, he withdrew his hand and said calmly, "Your blood and energy are doing better, but your emotional stress has built up. Keep this up, and even if your body holds up, your mind won't."
I was stunned. George had nailed it just from my pulse.
"I brought your traditional medicine for the next few days," he added. "Same dose, same prep. Just have the maid brew it like before." He took the packets out of the case, placed them on the table, and rose to leave.
"Wait!" I called out, suddenly remembering Aiden was still unconscious upstairs.
George was one of the best doctors, especially when it came to acupuncture.
Maybe George could help. Aiden was still struggling with what happened during the acupuncture.
But I hesitated. Anyone could see that George and I were at each other's throats lately.
"What now?" He stopped, irritation clear in his voice.
I kept my voice steady. "A friend of mine is sick upstairs. Could you please take a look at him?"
"No time." Just as expected, George refused without a second thought.
Out of options, I tried to threaten him. "If you're too busy, I'll just go to the hospital and find Clarissa. Quinn will probably be there too. I'll let them both hear exactly what you said to me that day. Let's see how they react."
"You recorded me?" George glared at me, furious.
I just shrugged. "I wonder if Clarissa would be touched if she knew everything you've done for her?"
"Natalia, you're despicable!" George's face flushed crimson, the veins in his neck bulging with rage.
He was pretty naive—one little bluff, and he bought it.
I gave him a smirk. After a moment, he finally caved in, his face dark with resentment. "Fine. Take me upstairs."
In the guest room, after hearing my explanation, Rose turned to George with hope in her eyes and explained Aiden's situation.
George listened intently while checking Aiden's pulse.
The moment Rose mentioned the acupuncture mishap, George frowned hard. "That kind of accident shouldn't happen."
"What do you mean by that, Dr. Johnson?" Rose asked, looking confused.
George explained, "Any licensed acupuncturist knows the contraindications. Mr. Stuart's original injury was in his right arm; it damaged the meridians there. So even for rehab, the focus should've stayed on the arm and head."
"Right here," he said, his fingers resting on the back of Aiden's neck. "This is a no-go zone in acupuncture. Touching it with the kit can cause real nerve damage, especially to the brain." He put it mildly, but Rose and I understood what he meant.
"You'e saying the doctor earlier did this to him on purpose?" Rose's eyes widened in disbelief.
George gave a small nod. "At this point, I can't rule out that possibility."
