"Let go of me!" The second Quinn touched me, something inside me snapped. All the anger I'd been holding in came pouring out.
I frowned and tried to push him away, but he was just too strong for me.
With a grim face, he hauled me over his shoulder. I could feel his steady steps as he carried me quickly upstairs.
I struggled desperately, but Quinn's grip was unrelenting. A moment later, we were in the bedroom.
"Quinn, what the hell are you doing?" Furious, I bit down on his shoulder, hard.
He gasped in pain. Then he threw me hard onto the bed.
"Damn it, Natalia! You bite like a wild animal." He winced, pulling off his shirt.
The mark stood out against his skin. I stared at it, a little unsettled.
My heart was pounding. I wondered if I had really used that much force just now.
Still fuming, I stammered, "I... I've been telling you to let go. Are you deaf or something, Quinn?"
He burst out laughing. "Listen to yourself."
I snapped back, "Shut up!"
"Natalia, we're husband and wife," he said, his smile fading as his deep eyes locked onto mine. "When something's wrong, I need you to trust me. Just talk to me first. Give me that chance, okay?"
Quinn sure knew how to make it sound reasonable. But how was I supposed to trust him?
I glared at him and asked, "Quinn, if it were me who spent all of New Year's Eve with another man, would you be indifferent?"
"Don't you dare!" he snapped, scowling.
I cursed him for his double standard.
"Oh, I see. So the rules only apply when they suit you. Don't worry, I won't make the mistake of interrupting next time. That work for you, Mr. Madden?" I said with a snort.
"Natalia!" Quinn growled. I had clearly pushed him too far.
He strode up to me, his towering frame casting a shadow over me as his expression darkened to something dangerous
The room felt colder all of a sudden, and a shiver crept up my spine.
For a split second, I met Quinn's bloodshot gaze. My heart pounded wildly. I was almost convinced he was about to hit me. But instead, he just took a deep breath and slowly crouched down.
He looked up at me, his hand warm around mine. "Natalia, every promise I've ever made to you—I've never forgotten a single one."
My heart skipped a beat. Looking into Quinn's sincere eyes, I could feel my anger fading.
"But can depression be cured in just two months?" I still felt upset. Whether Clarissa had depression or not, Quinn's reaction last night had left me deeply shaken.
"Nordia's medical care is on par with Enschester's," Quinn said firmly.
He also said everything in Nordia was already set. The plan to relocate Clarissa and her mother in two months wouldn't change.
I guessed that was the answer I was looking for. But even with his answer, I still didn't feel at ease.
It was like words were clogged in my throat—impossible to say, impossible to swallow.
I wanted so badly to ask Quinn if he'd never contact them again after this.
The moment this thought popped into my head, I realized how ridiculous it was
First, Julia meant everything to Quinn. Second, there was no point in asking for a promise he couldn't keep.
What I wanted wasn't just for Quinn to be here. I wanted his heart.
Quinn yawned beside me and muttered, "I haven't slept a wink in a whole day and night. I'm so sleepy."
"Why didn't you have Finn drive you back? That way, you could've caught some sleep in the car," I said.
Quinn rested his head gently on my arm, closed his eyes, and whispered, "After I left the hospital, all I wanted was to see you and Benedict as soon as possible."
I froze in surprise. Quinn rarely spoke to me like this, with bare affection.
Before I could react, Quinn's breathing steadied. To my surprise, he was already asleep.
The next morning, when I woke, Quinn was still asleep.
Seeing how exhausted he was, I slipped out of bed and headed to Maple Media for work.
As soon as I arrived, I heard some exciting news.
Starry River pulled in over 30 million dollars on opening day. To celebrate, York handed out cash bonuses to everyone on the project team.
Everyone else was bouncing with joy, but I was the only one with mixed feelings.
Because I knew all too well that much of Starry River's success came from the media frenzy following June's retirement announcement.
In the CEO's office, York was in high spirits, raising an eyebrow with a grin. "Uncle called this morning to congratulate us on Starry River's big win."
"Is he coming to Enschester soon?" I asked.
The acquisition plan was proceeding smoothly as scheduled. Shawn Lee would visit Maple Media, and York had been preparing for it.
"The 8th of next month," York replied confidently. Then, with a quick change of subject, he asked, "Are you free tonight?"
"What?" I asked.
York looked delighted. "Let's celebrate! Want to grab dinner together tonight?"
I thought that he wanted me to have dinner at home with Shirley, so I agreed.
To my surprise, after work, York took me to a live music restaurant.
He had already ordered everything in advance, so I couldn't exactly refuse his hospitality. I just pretended not to be surprised and went along with the meal.
"How's your mom been lately?" I was making small talk.
"Didn't you just go back the day before yesterday?" York raised an eyebrow, like he could see right through me. "Natalia, you've been a bit off since this morning."
I barely concealed my disdain and scoffed, "Don't be nosy. Mind your own business!"
Just then, a commotion erupted at the neighboring table.
"Fuck you! If you don't drink, why the hell are you even pushing booze here?" slurred the man with the thick gold chain.
He looked pretty wasted, his tanned face flushed. With a thud, he slammed a bottle of liquor down on the table.
Beside him, a petite woman was trembling uncontrollably. With her back to me, I couldn't see her face, but I heard her quivering, timid voice. "Sir, I'm just here to promote drinks, not to be your drinking companion..."
Her voice sounded familiar. I paused, listening carefully.
The man slammed the table and sprang up. In a flash, he seized the woman's arm and shoved her backward.
The woman crashed to the floor, her face twisted in agony. My mind went blank the moment I saw her face.
