"Wait!" I blurted out, stopping Skylar abruptly.
Elijah deserved a bad end. After all the evil deeds he committed. But moved by Skylar's love for him, I decided to offer her one last act of kindness.
"Anything else?" Skylar stopped, turning back to look at me with surprise.
I asked in a neutral tone, "How much more do you need?"
Skylar froze for a moment before realizing I was referring to Elijah's burial expenses.
As if unable to believe her ears, Skylar stared at me for a long moment before stammering while holding up her fingers. "When my mother passed... We bought a double burial plot... Now, for my father to be buried there, I just need to pay the $4,200 maintenance fee... I've already saved $1,400..."
"It's just 2,800 bucks," I thought dismissively.
Never in her wildest dreams had the once-glamorous Skylar imagined she'd be brought to her knees by a mere three grand.
"I'll transfer the money to your account before tomorrow," Natalia said flatly.
"Thank you... Thank you so much!" Skylar's eyes widened in excitement, her voice trembling as she stammered, "Please, just treat this as a loan—I'll pay you back every cent as soon as I can!"
"Keep it," I said coolly. I narrowed my eyes at her and said, "Don't thank me yet. The money isn't a free handout. If you want it, you'll have to agree to one condition."
Skylar asked nervously, "What condition?"
After a moment's thought, I told her firmly, "Once your father's burial is settled, you must leave Enschester immediately. From then on, you're only allowed back on your parents' death anniversaries—no other time."
At my words, Skylar's eyes widened in shock. Skylar looked at me, her voice trembling with confusion. "I don't get it... I'm no threat to you at all now..."
"You don't need to understand," I pressed, fixing her with a steady gaze. "Just tell me straight. Do you accept my terms or not?"
Skylar bit her lower lip, then gave a slow, heavy nod. "Okay, I agree. I'll leave Enschester right after my father's burial."
Relieved, I didn't see any point in waiting until tomorrow. I immediately transferred the money to Skylar via mobile payment. Just then, a thought struck me. I turned to Skylar and asked, "By the way, did you come to Enschester with anyone this time?"
"No." Skylar's denial was instant. She didn't even pause to think.
I couldn't help but remember what Raelynn had mentioned earlier. She'd seen Skylar with some unfamiliar man. 'Probably Raelynn made a mistake,' I figured.
Skylar took the money, thanked me profusely, and left.
"I'm exhausted," I murmured, about to hail a cab when York called out from behind me, "It's rush hour. Let me give you a ride."
"When did York show up?" I wondered, startled by his sudden appearance.
"Done with the negotiation so soon?" I blurted out. After causing such a ruckus in the restaurant, I thought York would be stuck apologizing for ages.
"Nothing worth discussing with him anyway," York said offhandedly as he opened the car door for me.
It was the dead of winter. The cold outside enough to make anyone shiver. My frail constitution meant that even with the car's blasting heater, I had to rub my hands together for quite a while before the chill finally subsided.
Just then, York handed me a steaming cup of honey pomelo juice. "Here, drink this," he said.
My jaw dropped. "Where on earth did you get that?" I exclaimed.
"Is he a magician or something? How did he just conjure up a hot drink out of thin air?" Natalia thought in amazement.
York arched an eyebrow. "Lucas is a world-class mixologist. Drink up. It's safe."
