I froze. So that's what he was up to in the music lounge all this time, having Lucas whip up a drink?
After a brief pause, I replied evenly, "Thanks." I lowered my head and took a gentle sip through the straw. The fragrant sweetness flowed down my throat, instantly spreading warmth through my stomach.
Natalia let out a sigh of relief, savoring the taste before exclaiming, "Wow, this is amazing!"
York smiled faintly while focusing on driving. True to rush hour chaos, we were soon gridlocked at an interchange, unable to move an inch.
I was gazing at the nightscape outside the car window when York suddenly spoke up in a solemn voice, "Natalia, if you repay evil with kindness, then with what will you repay kindness?"
"Huh?" I blinked, utterly confused by York's sudden remark.
York didn't beat around the bush. "You're giving Skylar money to bury Elijah. Aren't you worried she'll turn out to be another Gemma?"
Just thinking about Gemma still gave me chills. Knowing York meant well, for once I didn't give him the cold shoulder.
"No worries." I smiled with full confidence and said, "Once Elijah is buried, Skylar will leave Enschester right away. After that, our paths will never cross again."
I turned to York, raised an eyebrow, and teased, "Am I smart or what?"
York fixed me with an intense gaze and said gravely, "You didn't make her leave Enschester because you were afraid she'd hurt you."
"After the Hinton Group went bankrupt, many debts were left unpaid. If the creditors learned where Skylar was, they'd definitely go out of their way to make her life difficult," York said thoughtfully. "By sending her away from Enschester, you were actually protecting her."
I froze, stunned that York had seen straight through me so effortlessly.
Seeing me freeze up, York suddenly reached over and vigorously ruffled my hair. "So, tell me. Aren't I smart or what?"
My hair was tousled by York, and I froze for a moment before snapping back to reality and instinctively pushing his hand away. With a weary sigh, I said, "I know better than anyone what it's like to grow up without parents to protect you. Skylar must have felt that same pain. Some hardships in life. Just one taste is enough. I'm not repaying evil with kindness; I'm just staying true to myself."
At her words, York let out a long, weary sigh. A car horn blared from behind. Snapping out of his thoughts, York refocused on the road ahead. An hour later, York drove me back to the villa.
Upon entering the living room, the housekeeper approached me, handed me an invitation with a warm smile, and said respectfully, "Mrs. Madden, Miss Madden had this delivered for you."
I opened it to find an invitation to Lindsey's solo fashion show. The show was scheduled for next Tuesday.
I had personally promised Lindsey I'd attend. Just as I put the invitation away, I spotted Quinn's car pulling into the driveway.
"Mr. Madden is back," the housekeeper informed me respectfully. "Mrs. Madden, shall I prepare dinner?"
I gave a distracted nod, only to freeze when the person stepping out of the car wasn't Quinn at all, but Finn.
Finn approached with steady purpose, coming to stand before me. "Good evening, Madam," he said respectfully.
"Finn? Why are you here? Where's Quinn?" I asked, peering into the car for a long moment but seeing no sign of Quinn.
"Mrs. Madden, Mr. Madden sent me to pick you up," Finn said.
"Where are we going?" I asked curiously.
A faint smile appeared on Finn's face as he kept me in suspense, gesturing for me to follow. "Mr. Madden told me not to spill the beans. You'll find out when we get there."
