"Is Quinn planning a surprise for me?" I wondered.
My heart raced as I saw the smile on Finn's face. "Where on earth is he taking me?" I wondered, completely baffled by this mystery destination. After a brief pause, I said, "Let me go take Benedict."
"Mrs. Madden, Mr. Madden specifically instructed me to bring only you," Finn stopped me.
"Wait, I can't even bring Benedict?" I thought, feeling even more confused. "What the hell is Quinn up to?" I wondered, my confusion growing. "I am even more at a complete loss," I thought.
"Mrs. Madden, we should get going now. We wouldn't want to keep Mr. Madden waiting," Finn urged.
Snapping back to reality, I could only give the nanny a few quick instructions about Benedict, threw on my coat, and got into Finn's car. It was deep into the night, and the streets were deserted.
Finn drove smoothly, but the route we were taking was completely unfamiliar to me.
Finn drove her beyond the city limits, and as the familiar skyline faded, a sense of anticipation welled up inside her. Eventually, they exited the highway in the suburbs and pulled up outside a sprawling estate. The estate was dotted with twinkling lights, glowing warmly under the moonlight.
Finn pulled up at the gate, stepped out to open my door with a courteous smile, and said, "Here we are. I won't be going in with you, Mrs. Madden. Have a wonderful evening with Mr. Madden." Finn sped away.
Standing at the gate, I hesitated. Should I call Quinn or just ring the doorbell? Just then, the grand double doors suddenly swung open on their own. Only when a trail of glow sticks flickered to life did I notice the narrow runner carpet laid out along the path into the estate.
My phone buzzed. It was a WhatsApp message from Quinn. "Follow the light to me."
"He's actually kind of romantic?" I thought, a little surprised. My heart skipped a beat, then hammered wildly in my chest. I froze.
A chilly breeze swept over me. I pulled my coat tighter and quickened my pace along the soft carpet.
The deeper I ventured into the estate, the fewer glow sticks illuminated the path, and the way ahead grew dimmer. As I stepped fully into the estate, the glow sticks on the ground vanished completely.
With a click, the lights suddenly went out, plunging the room into complete darkness where I couldn't even see my own hand before my face.
Startled, I blurted out, "Quinn? Are you there?"
Suddenly, my palm grew warm as a broad, calloused hand enveloped mine. I jolted instinctively, my body trembling, when Quinn's deep, velvety voice murmured by my ear, "Don't be scared. It's me."
Hearing Quinn's voice, I instantly felt at ease. "What on earth are you up to?" I teased, the tension melting away. I looked up, and in the darkness, all I could see was Quinn's chiseled profile.
In the pitch-black night, Quinn's dark eyes gleamed with an almost unnatural brightness.
"Shh," Quinn murmured tenderly, fixing his gaze on me as he gently led me forward by the hand. "Don't speak. Just follow me." Quinn led me forward and pushed open the door.
The house was warm as Quinn led me in, holding my hand, then gently let go. Quinn circled behind me and gently slipped off my coat. Next, Quinn's slender fingers moved to the buttons of my blouse, deftly undoing them one by one.
I was completely thrown off. "Was Quinn drunk or something?" I wondered. "But I didn't smell any alcohol on him?" I wondered.
Embarrassment and irritation flared up in me as I was quickly losing my patience. I reached out to stop him and snapped, "Turn on the lights!"
"Are you sure?" Quinn whispered, his thin lips brushing against my ear as he smirked playfully. "So you like it with the lights on?"
With a snap of his fingers, the smart chandelier flickered to life.
