Deeply moved by Shirley's words, June hurried to York's bedside and began gently wiping the dirt from his face.
At the nurse's reminder, I went downstairs to complete the hospital admission paperwork.
Hospitals were never short on patients, and a long line had formed at the payment counter. Standing at the very end, I casually glanced around and suddenly spotted a familiar-looking woman—Gemma Hernandez.
Gemma was standing at the information counter, speaking nervously to the nurse.
A moment later, she turned to leave—but a man in a baseball cap appeared just then, quickly stepping forward and grabbing her hand.
A chill ran down my spine. Even if Forrest was burned to a crisp—I'd still recognize that bastard!
In a flash, memories of the island came rushing back—of him pulling the trigger, of the searing pain in my leg when the bullet hit. Just the thought of it made my calf throb all over again.
After all this time with Forrest evading justice, I never expected to run into him right here in the hospital today.
Without a second thought, I immediately pulled out my phone and called the cops.
The call connected instantly. Eyes locked on Forrest and Gemma, I lowered my voice and told the detective in charge, "Officer, I've just spotted Forrest Green!"
"Where is he?" the officer asked me urgently.
I gave the officer the hospital's address. In a grave tone, the officer said, "We're on our way. Don't confront him—just make sure he stays within your line of sight, but don't get too close—your safety matters most."
"Got it," I replied before hanging up.
Just then, I caught sight of Forrest dragging Gemma toward the exit—they were about to leave the hospital.
What? They're leaving already? Forrest is too cunning. If I let him get away this time, catching him again will be next to impossible.
My heart pounded fiercely, and I abandoned the payment line to follow them discreetly.
Fortunately, the hospital lobby was packed. In my black down jacket, I blended seamlessly into the bustling crowd, completely unnoticed.
I rushed after them to the hospital entrance, just in time to see Gemma yank her hand out of Forrest's grasp. "Let go of me! Boss is in trouble—I can't just stand by!" she snapped.
I froze. The "Boss" she mentioned—that was the mastermind behind all this.
So their boss is in the hospital now?
"Hmph, since when is it your place to worry about the Boss's affairs?" Forrest sneered, his voice laced with menace. "Gemma, know your place. Boss would never take a liking to a woman like you. And if your reckless actions today mess up his plans, you damn well know what consequences you'll face!"
At his words, Gemma shuddered violently, fear written all over her face.
Seeing her reaction, Forrest smirked and slid an arm around her shoulders again. "That's more like it. I've already looked into it—the boss is alive and well. Now, be a good girl and come with me. We'll wait for further instructions from him."
"Is Boss really okay?" Gemma exhaled in relief.
Forrest nodded. "Naturally. I know better than to lie about the boss."
Gemma stopped resisting. Forrest pulled his cap down low, steered Gemma by the shoulder, and guided her toward the curbside.
A black sedan was parked by the curb. Forrest unlocked it with his key, and Gemma scrambled inside without hesitation.
My heart dropped. If they drove off now, how would the police ever catch them?
I instinctively thought to follow them by car—only to remember I had come to the hospital in an ambulance. My own vehicle was still parked back at the Metropolitan Art Museum.
I considered grabbing a cab, but the entrance was crowded with people trying to do the same. By the time I managed to get a cab, Forrest would be long gone.
I could only watch helplessly as Forrest pulled open the driver's door.
