There was no time to hesitate—I clenched my teeth and bolted toward the car.
I yanked the car door open. "Get out!" I stood back on the curb, maintaining a safe distance from the two of them.
Inside the car, Gemma froze at the sight of me. "Natalia?" she blurted out, her eyes wide with surprise.
Following that, Gemma narrowed her eyes at me and snapped, "Didn't we already settle our scores?"
"I'm not here for you," I said flatly, eyes locking on Forrest behind the wheel. "I'm here for him." I let out a low laugh. "Forrest—long time no see. Honestly, I thought you were dead."
Forrest raised an eyebrow, clearly unfazed by my sudden appearance. He carried the same quiet poise as always, his expression calm, though something dark lingered in his eyes. "A shame I don't have time to play today," he said. "Next time we meet, I'll make sure to give you the attention you deserve."
His voice sent a chill down my spine.
I silently prayed the cops were close by, mentally plotting how to buy more time.
"Hmph, why wait until next time?" I shot back, faking anger. "It's time to settle both old and new scores." I flashed a cold smile, pretending to be furious. "I'm Mrs. Madden of Enschester. You should know exactly what happens when you cross me."
I thought my act was flawless, but Forrest saw right through me.
Forrest's face darkened instantly. He sneered, "What's the matter, Mrs. Madden? Can't handle the game? Think calling the cops will stop me?" With that, he fired up the engine.
The car engine roared to life, and my heart pounded wildly. I gripped the passenger door with all my strength, trying to keep the car from pulling away.
The next moment, Forrest yanked Gemma by the hair and kicked her out of the car.
My eyes widened in shock as Gemma's body came hurtling straight at me. The force of the impact made me lose my grip on the car door.
"Ah!" I cried out in pain as Gemma slammed into me, knocking me to the ground.
Forrest flashed a cheeky grin as he slammed the car door shut. "See you around, Mrs. Madden!" Forrest called out, slamming the door shut with a grin before flooring the accelerator and vanishing in a blur.
Damn it!
Gritting my teeth as I watched the car disappear, I roughly shoved Gemma away.
Gemma had fallen badly as well, and the deathly pallor on her face made her look frightening.
I heard the wail of sirens—the cops had finally arrived, but it was already too late.
"Ms. Hinton, are you all right?" The officer helped me and Gemma up from the ground.
I shook my head, wincing from the pain, and told the cops, "Forrest got away. I couldn't stop him." Then I pointed at Gemma and scowled. "She's in cahoots with Forrest."
Gemma threw her hands up dramatically. "Officer, you've got it all wrong! I'm a law-abiding citizen! Forrest was trying to kidnap me just now—thank goodness you showed up in time to save me!"
I honestly thought that after the way Forrest treated her, Gemma would finally spill something useful.
Turns out, I overestimated how much pride she really had.
The officers fixed their gaze on Gemma, demanding she show her ID and cooperate with their investigation.
Gemma cooperated fully with the investigation, but the police found no criminal record under her name.
In fact, after getting off the island, I even signed a forgiveness statement to help Gemma—only to realize later she had used me.
Just thinking about it made my blood boil.
"We'll continue to track Forrest's whereabouts. If you come across any further leads, please contact the cops immediately." The officer's words were routine, part of the standard procedure.
All I could do was nod, grinding my teeth as I watched Gemma walk away with a smug look on her face.
