"The doctors only have your best interests at heart. I think they're right. If there really is internal bleeding, it could be very serious." Shirley glared at York, her gentle voice laced with warning. "Listen carefully. Without the doctors' approval, you're staying right here in that hospital bed. No going anywhere, understand?"
"Mom, I'm really fine." York smiled helplessly, then looked at me playfully. "Besides, Natalia is with me at work all day. If anything happens, she can just rush me to the hospital."
"Pfft!" I actually choked this time. Coughing twice, I shot back with a laugh. "Honestly, I'd rather haul a pig than carry you."
York retorted, "No carrying members of your own species."
I was rendered speechless.
Shirley was tickled by our banter, covering her mouth as she giggled merrily from the sidelines.
A warm and cheerful atmosphere filled the hospital room.
After York and I had a bit of banter, Shirley laughed and gently stopped us, then asked softly, "Is your uncle arriving in Enschester the day after tomorrow?"
I glanced at my phone. The 8th was indeed the day Shawn would arrive at Maple Media for the final due diligence inspection.
"Yeah, his flight gets into Enschester the afternoon after tomorrow," I confirmed.
Shirley thought for a moment and said, "Let's stick to our original plan. When your uncle arrives, we'll bring him home to stay with us and host a family dinner to welcome him. I've already hired a chef who knows exactly what dishes your uncle prefers."
After all, Shawn was Shirley's elder brother. There was no way we'd let him stay at a hotel when he came to Enschester.
Shirley's plan was extremely thoughtful, and neither York nor I had any objections whatsoever.
For the next two days, after York was discharged, he returned to work at Maple Media, while I took some time to help Shirley decorate the house.
At noon on the 8th, York and I met up in Maple Media's garage, ready to head to the airport.
He was dressed in a formal suit today, his long legs accentuated by the tailored black trousers.
Spotting me, York flipped the car keys to me and slid into the passenger seat. With an easy smile, he said, "The doctor advised that I shouldn't drive for a month. Appreciate it."
I was lost for words. Couldn't he find a driver in a company as big as Maple Media?
"Why didn't the doctor also advise you to stop eating for a month?" I muttered under my breath, but still obediently started the car.
I caught a glimpse of York smirking out of the corner of my eye. After reclining his seat, he actually closed his eyes and settled in for a nap.
Seriously, was he trying to get himself killed?
Too annoyed to bother with him, I focused on driving.
An hour later, we arrived at the airport, perfectly timed with the landing of the flight from Sea City.
A middle-aged man in a sharp suit emerged from the VIP exit, slowly wheeling two oversized suitcases behind him.
"Is that our uncle?" I whispered to York beside me, not entirely sure.
I'd only seen Shawn a handful of times in Sea City since Mary passed away.
York nodded, his gaze fixed on Shawn.
Trailing right behind Shawn was a middle-aged woman in a luxurious fur coat.
York murmured beside me, "The true person-in-charge showed up just as expected."
I was stunned, not quite catching what York meant.
Meanwhile, Shawn emerged.
York adjusted his expression and led me forward to greet them. "Uncle Shawn, Aunt Faye, you must be tired after your long journey."
Only then did it dawn on me that the woman with heavy makeup was actually Shawn's wife, Faye Lee.
"York, Natalia, I hope we didn't keep you waiting too long?" Shawn greeted them with a practiced smile.
The next moment, Faye removed her sunglasses with a flick of her wrist, her gaze sweeping over York and me with obvious disdain. She scoffed, "What? Only you two kids came to pick us up?"
