I froze for a moment, not catching what Faye meant right away.
By the time I realized what was happening, York had already deftly eased the tension. "My mother prepared a welcome meal at home. Uncle Shawn, Aunt Faye, you must be exhausted after your long journey. Why don't you come back to the Smith family's residence with us and get some rest first?"
Instinctively, I glanced at York. It was rare to see him this attentive.
My gut told me Faye was anything but ordinary.
Shawn gave Faye a fawning smile and said, "Let's go, honey."
With that, he wheeled the suitcases forward, gesturing for York to lead the way.
"Dear!" Faye abruptly called out to Shawn.
Shawn immediately stopped and turned back, asking, "What's wrong, honey?"
Faye thrust her Hermès bag into Shawn's hands, shot a meaningful look at York and me, and snapped, "Enschester is freezing. I can barely feel my fingers. Carry my bag for me."
She stood there rubbing her hands together in an exaggerated manner, plunging the group into an awkward silence.
York, catching on, reached for Shawn's suitcases with a smile. "Let me take these for you."
I'd never dealt with Faye before, but to be honest, my first impression of her today was pretty lousy.
"Natalia, go ahead and turn on the car heater," York said thoughtfully.
For the sake of Maple Media's future, even though I really couldn't stand this difficult aunt, I had no choice but to nod in silent agreement.
Faye raised her chin haughtily, finally looking smug with satisfaction.
An hour later, we returned to the Smith family's residence.
Shirley had everything perfectly arranged with the household staff. When she saw Shawn, her face lit up with joy.
After a brief exchange with Shawn, Shirley turned to Faye with warm enthusiasm and said, "Faye, I didn't expect you to come with my brother on this trip. Had I known, I would have personally picked you up at the airport."
"Humph. From your tone, it sounds like you're blaming me for coming uninvited?" Faye sneered.
Shirley's smile froze instantly, and Shawn looked equally awkward. However, intimidated by Faye, he could only desperately try to smooth things over between them.
"You must be joking, Faye," Shirley said earnestly. "You and my brother are family. I couldn't be happier that you both came to visit."
Faye practically rolled her eyes to the ceiling, but dropped the subject with a huff. "Whatever. I'm starving. Back at the airport, your son mentioned you'd prepared a feast. Can we eat now?"
"Dinner is ready. Aunt Faye, after you." York appeared in time and led everyone to the dining hall.
The household staff served the dishes one after another.
As I looked at the dishes that would soon fill every inch of the banquet table, I realized that calling Shirley's preparations today "sumptuous" was an understatement.
She literally served every specialty from Enschester on this table.
Even Shawn was stunned and exclaimed, "Shirley, it's just a family dinner. You've really gone all out with the preparations."
"After Mom passed away, you're the only family I have left in this world." Shirley sighed, her eyes growing misty. "So when I heard you were coming to Enschester, I was genuinely overjoyed."
Shawn froze momentarily, a wave of melancholy washing over him.
He set down his fork, raised his glass to clink gently with Shirley's, and said solemnly, "Mom might be gone, but our family is still here. If you ever feel lonely in Enschester, why not come back to Sea City? My home will always be your home."
"Ahem!" Faye cleared her throat sharply and shot Shawn a pointed glare.
