Shirley smiled tactfully and said, "With both my children by my side, how could I possibly feel lonely? Brother, when I have time, I'll be sure to visit you and Faye in Sea City."
Shawn smiled in agreement and urged everyone to dig in.
This was a family dinner. York and Shawn tactfully avoided any talk of work, sharing an unspoken understanding.
Shortly after dinner, Faye started complaining loudly about her backache from the long flight, insisting that Shawn go back to the bedroom to give her a massage.
Finally, I found a chance to be alone with Shirley.
In the garden, I asked her puzzledly, "Mom, did you offend Aunt Faye before?"
Otherwise, why did Faye always speak to our family with such venom in her words?
Shirley smiled at me and said nonchalantly, "I never did anything to offend her, but she does hold a grudge against me.
"When she married into the Lee family, she had her eye on your grandma's emerald ring. That ring was part of your grandma's dowry, and by Sea City's tradition, it should have gone to the daughter-in-law. But your grandma wasn't particularly fond of Faye, so she left the ring to me instead."
I knew Mary's personality well. She was even more outspoken and uncompromising than Shirley.
If Mary didn't like someone, she wouldn't bother hiding her feelings.
I rolled my eyes and said, "Seriously? Aunt Faye hates you just because of that emerald ring? That's so petty."
The more I thought about how Faye had been finding fault with my family members since the moment we met, the angrier I got.
"Yeah. Maybe in her mind, I schemed to get that ring from your grandma," Shirley said, clearly unbothered.
She patted my hand and advised, "Natalia, your aunt may be a bit petty, but she just throws the occasional tantrum. Your uncle both fears and loves her. With Maple Media at such a critical juncture, try not to get into any conflicts with her."
I nodded and snuggled up to her, whispering, "How could I possibly get into a conflict with her? I'm just worried she'll give you a hard time, Mom."
Shirley said gently, "It's alright. She won't be around Enschester for long."
The sound of approaching footsteps made us turn. York was walking toward us.
York said, "Natalia, Uncle Shawn wants to check out Maple Media. Why don't you join us?"
"Now?" I was a little surprised. I hadn't expected Shawn to be such a go-getter.
York nodded, his expression serious as he looked at Shirley. "Mom, looks like you'll have to spend the afternoon alone with Aunt Faye."
It turned out that York was just as worried as I was that Mom might have to put up with Faye.
Shirley chuckled and waved us off. "What's gotten into you two? Treating your old mom like a helpless child? Alright, I can take care of myself. You two go handle your business."
In the living room, Shawn was already waiting.
York guided me inside. Suddenly, he leaned in close and murmured in a voice barely above a whisper, "When we get to the company, no matter what conditions Uncle Shawn puts forward, you must agree to every single one."
I was stunned. Before I could even ask him why, we'd stepped into the living room.
Half an hour later, at Maple Media headquarters.
With York and me as his guides, Shawn toured Maple Media's headquarters and reviewed the company's financial reports from the past six months.
He looked increasingly pleased, his smile broadening. "After everything that happened, you two actually managed to turn the tide and rescue Maple Media from the brink of bankruptcy. The younger generation certainly surpasses expectations."
York put on a show of flattery, offering a few perfunctory compliments.
Shawn fixed his sharp gaze on me and suddenly asked, "Natalia, after the acquisition is complete, would you be interested in taking over as CEO of Maple Media?"
