Faye watched with visible displeasure as I ushered Shirley into the fitting room, finally remarking through gritted teeth, "Be careful. Don't you dare soil the master's creation."
Five minutes later, Shirley emerged from the fitting room with graceful poise.
The gown fit Shirley like it was custom-made for her. Wearing it, she was the very picture of an elegant society heiress—like she had stepped straight out of a Roaring Twenties novel.
The gown worked like magic. Shirley seemed to shed ten years in an instant.
One of the shop assistants couldn't help but exclaim, "Ms. Lee, your presence is absolutely stunning."
I hurried over and took Shirley by the hand, leading her to the mirror. "Mom, you look gorgeous."
Shirley grew flustered under our praise.
Shirley lowered her eyes demurely, stealing a glance at her reflection in the mirror before breaking into a gentle, ladylike smile. "This gown is beautiful."
Faye snapped impatiently, "Alright, I'm quite satisfied with the gown. Go change out of it now."
Faye frowned at Shirley, practically grinding her teeth in anger.
With that, Faye turned her head and quickly regained her polite demeanor before declaring grandly to Lindsey, "Miss Madden, I'll take this gown. Please have someone wrap it up for me."
"Certainly, Ms. Garcia. I'll personally handle the packaging for you," Lindsey said with a gracious smile. Then she instructed the nearby assistant, "Please escort Ms. Garcia to process the payment of 15 million dollars."
"How much?" Faye's eyes nearly popped out of her head, clearly thinking she must have misheard.
I was stunned too, thinking to myself that Lindsey really had some nerve.
15 million dollars for a dress? Even the richest person in the world would think twice.
Shirley and I exchanged stunned glances. She lowered her voice and whispered, "At 15 million dollars, this is probably the most expensive evening gown in the world, right?"
"It's 15 million dollars," Lindsey reconfirmed with a poised smile. "Ms. Garcia, as I mentioned earlier, this is Christina's treasured evening gown. It's the only one of its kind in the world."
"Even for a collector's item, this price is... simply outrageous!" Faye gasped.
Lindsey feigned innocence and asked, "Ms. Garcia, is the price a bit steep for you? We do offer installment plans, but of course, we'd need to see some proof of your financial standing."
Lindsey's comment about needing an installment plan just to buy a dress left Faye speechless.
Her face flushed beet red, then paled to ashen white. Trapped between a rock and a hard place, she stood there for a long moment, unable to get a single word out.
"I'll go change," Shirley murmured. She still hadn't realized that Lindsey was playing a game.
Just then, Lindsey called out toward the door, "Quinn!"
Right then, Quinn strode into the boutique.
I blurted out in surprise, "Quinn, what are you doing here?"
Quinn glanced at me, smiled at everyone, and then said to me, "Didn't we agree last night that I'd treat your aunt to dinner tonight?"
I froze for a moment. Quinn's gaze shifted to Shirley, and he exclaimed admiringly, "Mom, this gown suits you. With Christmas just around the corner, consider this my holiday gift to you."
With that, Quinn took out a black card and passed it to Lindsey.
Lindsey deliberately raised her voice, staring straight at Faye. "This gown costs 15 million dollars. And Ms. Garcia saw it first. Doesn't business go by first come, first served?"
"Money's no object as long as Mom's happy," Quinn said with exaggerated sincerity, then turned to Faye with a smile. "Ms. Garcia, would you be willing to part with this treasure, even if it pains you?"
With Lindsey and Quinn playing off each other, Faye looked more and more humiliated by the second.
Yet with no grounds to object, Faye couldn't make a scene right then.
Faye gritted her teeth and said, "It's just a dress. Shirley, since you like it so much, I'll graciously concede it to you."
