Seeing the humiliated look on Faye's face after she got slapped down, I couldn't help but feel a surge of satisfaction.
Quinn maintained a polite attitude the entire time. He asked with feigned courtesy, "Auntie, what would you like for dinner? I'll have someone make a reservation right away."
"Don't bother sparing the expense. I have plans with friends in Enschester tonight," Faye said with a frown, grabbing her bag and heading for the door.
Lindsey watched her walk away and couldn't hold back anymore. She burst into laughter.
"I was dying holding it in! I kept telling myself not to break character, afraid I'd give away the act," Lindsey said while taking a few deep breaths, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Then she grinned at me and asked, "So, Natalia, how was my acting?"
I gave her a thumbs-up and laughed. "If you're not nominated for next year's Oscars, I'm not watching it!"
"Wait, that was all an act?" Shirley finally realized, staring at us in disbelief. "What on earth is going on here?"
Lindsey softened her smile and explained gently, "Mrs. Smith, this mall belongs to the Madden Group. My brother assigned me here recently to oversee operations, and I happened to spot you during my rounds today. I listened outside for a while and realized Mrs. Lee was deliberately giving you a hard time. You're Natalia's mom, and she's always been so kind to me. I couldn't possibly let you be treated unfairly!"
Lindsey took the initiative while capitalizing on Faye's attention-seeking nature. She approached her as Christina's protégée, then used the one-of-a-kind gown Shirley was wearing as bait.
Finally, Lindsey secretly reached out to Quinn, making sure he showed up just in time to thoroughly embarrass Faye.
"Fifteen million dollars! When you threw out that price, you nearly gave my mom a heart attack," I chuckled softly.
Lindsey said smugly, "I knew she wouldn't be willing to spend 15 million dollars on a dress. Even if she really was a sucker and bought it, we'd still come out ahead!"
Lindsey's move was brutal. Faye was screwed either way, whether she bought it or not.
Shirley was completely dumbfounded.
Shirley glanced down at her gown, a thoughtful look in her eyes. "So... is this really one of Christina's designs?" she asked.
Lindsey explained, "Yes, but not entirely. This dress was co-designed by Christina and me. The Neglanan-style elements were my idea. Christina loved the finished piece so much that she kept it in her collection for a while. When I graduated, she gave it to me as a special gift."
Shirley finally pieced together the whole story. With a warm smile, she said, "This is truly a stunning gown, Miss Madden. You have remarkable talent in fashion design. Your future is boundless."
Lindsey replied sweetly, "Mrs. Smith, we're family now. Calling me 'Miss Madden' is too formal. Just call me Lindsey, like my family does."
"Alright then, Lindsey," Shirley said with a warm smile before stepping into the fitting room to change.
I could tell she really liked the dress, so I hesitantly asked Lindsey, "Lindsey, have you ever thought about selling this gown?"
"I wasn't completely acting when I was talking to Mrs. Lee," Lindsey said earnestly, "When I was studying abroad, my mentor always told us that every dress has a soul. It chooses its true owner. While designing this gown, I kept envisioning a faceless model wearing it. But the moment Mrs. Smith put it on, that faceless figure suddenly took on her features. I believe this dress has chosen Mrs. Smith as its rightful owner."
Quinn handed her his black card with a confident grin. "Since we've found the dress's true owner, let me buy it."
"Quinn, you're so tacky!" Lindsey teased, waving away the card.
Just then, Shirley stepped out of the fitting room in her own clothes.
