I led York to wash up and said with a smile, "Mrs. Wilcher's homemade ravioli are out of this world! If you want to hear the stories, just wait. She tells them best."
The room held just a small round table. After we took our seats, . Hannah served us two plates of steaming hot ravioli.
The enticing aroma wafted over, instantly transporting me back to my childhood days at the orphanage.
Back then, Hannah would often make ravioli for us. Those homemade ravioli were among my fondest memories from my days at the orphanage.
Without another word, I dug in and gobbled up the food.
Seeing this, York tentatively scooped up a ravioli with his spoon. The moment he tasted it, his eyes lit up, and he began devouring them one after another, unable to stop himself.
"Take your time eating, mind it's hot! If you want more, I can always make another batch," Hannah said kindly.
York set down his plate with a satisfied smile. "You weren't kidding, Natalia. This is truly something special. You can't find flavors like this anywhere else."
I finished the food, wiped my mouth, and said to Hannah with a grin, "My brother is a notoriously picky eater. If he says it's good, that means your cooking skills surpass even the greatest chef in the world!"
Hannah beamed with delight at our compliments.
At my request, Hannah put on her reading glasses, called over a few animals from the courtyard, and began introducing them to York.
York listened attentively, then gently stroked each little animal's head, a warm smile never leaving his face.
Before they knew it, it was already approaching midnight.
Hannah was getting on in years, and I didn't want to impose on her rest time any longer, so I rose to take my leave.
She looked at us tenderly and said amiably, "You're always welcome to drop by anytime, whether you're craving ravioli or just need to unwind."
We politely said our goodbyes to Hannah.
On the way back, I smiled at York and asked, "So, did you enjoy my little surprise tonight?"
He didn't answer directly. Instead, York asked me, "Did you used to come here often?"
I thought about it. Before marrying Quinn, I used to visit Hannah's place often to clear my mind.
After I got married, life just got a lot busier, especially now with Benedict to look after. So, it had been a long time since I last visited.
After I told York the truth, he fell silent for a moment, then said softly, "In some ways, animals really can be more comforting than people."
I said, "Yes. They've all had tragic pasts, but look how happy they are now."
I wanted York to understand that even though he had endured a tragic childhood, he could still find joy and fulfillment in the days to come if these animals could find happiness after their sufferin.
York didn't respond. He simply turned to gaze out the window, lost in thought.
Softly, I said to York, "Whenever you feel tired or down, you can always stop by Mrs. Wilcher's place."
As my voice faded, York checked his watch and said, "Ten minutes to midnight."
"What?" I was confused as I blinked at York.
"Vacation's almost over," York said, his expression suddenly darkening.
Before we knew it, the car had reached the entrance to the gated community.
York suddenly told me to pull over and said gravely, "Turn around and head back. I need to walk alone for a while."
I didn't think much of it and pulled over, making sure the car was parked properly.
York pushed the car door open and stepped out. Then he suddenly turned back, giving me a long, deep look. "Natalia, thank you for tonight... But I won't be going back there again."
