My heart raced in my chest as a thought suddenly crossed my mind. Could it be that Alex had figured out the truth about the divorce?
"Okay, please wait a moment while I change," I said, pushing aside the unease rising in my chest, and gave Drake a smile.
I quickly went into my bedroom and shut the door behind me, then dialed Quinn's number.
"Mrs. Madden, Mr. Madden is in a meeting at the Sea City branch. Is there anything I should pass on to him?" Finn's voice answered.
Quinn was in Sea City today.
A bad feeling crept up on me. No one, not even Finn, knew about my divorce from Quinn, so I couldn't explain it directly.
I kept it short, "When he's done, please tell him that Grandpa sent Drake to pick me up. There's probably something important."
After hanging up, I tried to calm my nerves as I got into the car Drake had brought and headed to the old mansion.
When I saw Georgia, I couldn't help but frown. The memory of her having Owen do those things to me made my blood boil.
Alex sat rigidly on the couch, his face unusually dark.
"Grandpa," I greeted him softly, trying to sound polite. "You called me over. Is there something going on?"
Before he could answer, Georgia sneered. "Don't you know what your family has done? You must have some idea." Her eyes gleamed with satisfaction.
I was stunned. "I don't understand what you're talking about."
Before I could say anything else, Alex's temper exploded. He slammed a file down onto me. "Do you understand this adoption certificate?"
When I heard "adoption certificate," my head buzzed.
My body went rigid as I picked up the file, and sure enough, it was the adoption certificate from when my foster parents had adopted me, issued by the orphanage.
How had this gotten into Georgia's hands? Suddenly, I remembered Diana's threat. I hadn't expected her to actually listen to my advice and pass the certificate on to Georgia to avoid crossing Alex herself.
"Used to be able to talk a lot, huh? Now, not a word?" Georgia mocked.
I looked up, glaring at her, and forced myself to say, "I'm a daughter of the Hinton family."
Georgia, high and mighty, sneered, "You're just a bastard the Hinton family brought in to deceive us. Who knows what kind of trash your real parents are? Luckily, that child died. Otherwise, you'd have ruined the Madden family's bloodline completely!"
Her cruel words cut through me. My anger flared. I wouldn't let anyone insult my child. "You've been talking so much, you must be thirsty. Have some water to clear your throat," I said, grabbing the coffee cup on the table and, without hesitation, throwing it in Georgia's face.
"Ah!" She screamed, stumbling backward. Her clothes were soaked, and she stomped her foot, ready to shout at me.
I coldly interrupted her, "And if we're talking about bloodlines, then people like you are the real stain on this world!"
Georgia's face turned red, her eyes wide with fury. She was so enraged she looked like she might jump at me to strike.
"Enough!" Alex roared, his voice shaking the room. Georgia froze, her body shivering.
Alex frowned at her before turning his cold gaze on me. "I don't care about your background, but I hate being deceived."
Alex had built the Madden Group from the ground up, and he was a legendary figure in Enschester.
Now, I understood that the pressure I often felt from Quinn was probably inherited from Alex.
I shivered, silence filling the air as I pressed my lips together. "I'm sorry for not telling you before we got married that I was adopted by the Hinton family. That was my mistake."
Alex narrowed his eyes, his face unreadable.
I took a breath. "If you think I'm lying, you're wrong. When our families set us up, there was no rule saying adopted kids didn't count. So what if I'm not their real kid? I'm a Hinton, and I married into the Maddens as one. I'm not ashamed of being adopted."
Georgia glared at me, then turned to Alex. "Ugh, still making excuses! Dad, the Hinton family has gone too far. Not only did they send a fake into our family, but they've been using our name to scam people everywhere. Just the other day, at Elijah's birthday party, they were telling everyone that if they worked with the Hinton Group, they could get a chance to collaborate with Madden Group!"
Alex looked at me for a long moment before suddenly changing his tone. "You say you didn't deceive me. Then let me ask you one thing: did you and Quinn actually get a divorce?"
My heart skipped a beat, and regret washed over me. I should've told Quinn to come clean with Alex privately from the start. Because every lie took countless others to cover it up.
Alex's words made me feel small. I lowered my gaze, falling into silence.
He was so sharp that he instantly knew the answer. "Well, I see! I've raised quite a grandson!" Alex slammed his hand down on the couch and started coughing violently.
"Dad, don't get too upset!" Georgia rushed to pat his back. Then, looking at me with a malicious glint, she said, "It's time to settle old and new scores."
Alex didn't speak again. After taking some medicine, he closed his eyes and rested on the couch.
Georgia seemed to take this as permission. She called out to the house staff with a smug look on her face. "Take this bitch down to the basement!"
My heart raced. I couldn't think of a good response.
"Looks like the Madden family has a new head. When I was outside earlier, I almost thought Mr. Madden was no longer with us!" A bright, clear voice rang out.
York walked in, flanked by bodyguards, looking relaxed and confident.
"Sorry, sir. I couldn't stop him," Drake said, bowing his head anxiously.
Georgia frowned. "Who are you?"
York smiled slightly and addressed Alex. "Who I am doesn't matter. Mr. Madden, I'm here to deliver a gift to you."
As he spoke, one of the bodyguards handed him a file. York took it, then placed it on the coffee table in front of Alex with a gentlemanly motion.
