At night, Rose, Aiden, and I gathered at the rooftop garden of the care home.
Rose prepared a sumptuous meal. Aiden bought a case of beer from the nearby supermarket.
"What's the point of just drinking? Why don't we play drinking games?" I suggested, trying my best to look happy.
They were my best friends, and I didn't want them to worry about me.
"What do you want to play?" Rose asked curiously.
I looked at her and then at Aiden. I had been trying to get them to become a couple for a long time, but they showed no progress in advancing their relationship. I figured I had to do something exciting today.
"How about Truth or Drink?" Seeing that Aiden and Rose had no objections, I smiled and added, "Since you agreed to play, you have to be honest. We must answer any kind of question posed truthfully. If anyone refuses to answer, they have to finish a glass of beer for each question."
Rose took out a deck of playing cards, and we each drew one.
In the first round, I drew K, Aiden drew 9, Rose drew 7.
I chuckled and asked Rose, "Rose, is there someone you like at the moment?"
I took into consideration that she was shy, so I didn't ask too bluntly right off the bat. I planned to take things step by step.
Rose's face instantly turned red, and she replied softly, "Yes."
I grinned and winked at Aiden.
Aiden looked a little awkward. He didn't react to my teasing and urged us to continue to the next round.
In the next round, I drew the card with the highest number. Aiden was unlucky and got 3.
"Aiden, is there someone you like at the moment?" I asked him the same question.
Aiden was stunned. He seemed embarrassed to share, but after a moment of silence, he replied softly, "Yes."
Rose immediately looked up at Aiden in surprise. Her face was as red as a tomato.
Aiden's answer surprised me. I initially thought that he was dense. Now, it seemed that the two of them were in love but had yet to confess to each other.
I planned to ask them more leading questions that could build up to a confession, but I ran out of luck.
I drew the lowest card in the next round.
Aiden looked at me thoughtfully and asked me seriously, "Will you fall in love with another man in the future?"
His question was sharp and took me by surprise.
I shook my head and said honestly, "I don't know."
I had been in love with Quinn for 10 years.
I wouldn't love him any more, but I might need to spend the rest of my life forgetting him.
I was uncertain if I had the courage to fall in love again.
I smiled and poured myself a glass of beer. I said playfully, "My answer doesn't seem to fit the rules."
I downed the glass of beer in one gulp. I instantly felt a little dizzy.
Rose empathized with me and shuffled the cards quickly so that we could continue playing.
I said, "You guys go ahead and continue the game. I'm a little tipsy. I'll go take a look at Benedict." I wanted to give Aiden and Rose some space. I got up wobbly and went to Benedict's room.
I sat by the crib and stared at Benedict, who was asleep. I muttered, "I took you away from your Daddy. Will you blame me in the future?"
My poor Benedict. He would eventually realize that he was different from other children.
Would he feel sad when he saw other children with their fathers by their side?
When he asked, how should I tell him about what had happened between me and Quinn?
