The people who initially wanted to help stopped in their tracks and began to criticize me for being ungrateful.
I felt like I was about to go bald from Skylar's tugging. Enduring the pain, I wanted to push her away again.
Suddenly, Skylar let go of me.
I lost my balance and almost fell. A figure scuttled to my side.
The next second, I fell into Quinn's arms.
"Quinn, stay out of this," urged Skylar, slightly hesitant. She was a little scared of Quinn.
Quinn glanced at her coldly and said in a gloomy voice, "You should be glad that I don't hit women. Get lost."
Skylar glared at me indignantly. In the end, she turned around and left.
"Thank you." I calmed down and said in a soft voice, "I'm sorry for dirtying your clothes."
I was disgusted by how terrible I smelled now.
Quinn frowned and asked me coldly, "Since when are you such a pushover?"
He picked me up and entered the elevator.
A few minutes later, we arrived at the underground parking lot. Quinn finally put me down.
I said, "I can't leave the hospital just yet."
I thought that he wanted to take me away and quickly explained to him that Jenna was still undergoing emergency treatment. I promised that I would be responsible for everything.
Quinn gave me a meaningful stare. Finally, he took out his phone and made a call.
After hanging up, he said to me, "I'll have Finn send over a set of clean clothes for you."
"Thank you." I lowered my eyes. I didn't know what to say other than thank him.
Quinn stopped talking. I didn't say anything either. The atmosphere was eerily quiet for a moment.
I didn't dare to look up. I didn't want Quinn to see my current sorry state.
After a moment, he suddenly asked me, "Do you want me to do anything?"
"What?" I didn't understand what he meant by that.
He explained, "To deal with the Hinton family. Or you can ask me for help if you're in any other trouble. I'll do my best to help you."
I jerked my head up and stared at him, stunned. I could see pity in his eyes.
He's pitying me!
I was overwhelmed by emotions. My chest felt stuffy. I suppressed the bitterness I felt and said to him, "Mr. Madden, thank you for your kindness, but I don't need anyone's sympathy."
Quinn frowned. "Natalia—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Finn's car stopped beside us.
I took the shopping bag from Finn, thanked him quickly, and fled into the bathroom.
I cleaned up and changed into clean clothes before returning to the emergency ward.
Skylar was nowhere to be seen. Elijah was alone outside the ward, crying with his head in his arms.
A moment later, the door of the operating theater opened. Elijah rushed up to the doctor and asked, "Doctor, how's my wife?"
The doctor took off his mask and said, "The surgery was successful. We'll wait for the patient to wake up before checking on her again."
Elijah was relieved. I also heaved a sigh of relief. I went to foot the hospital bill at the cashier before leaving the hospital.
That night, I was about to sleep when I received a call from Elijah. He reported, "Natalia, Jenna is awake."
"That's good news," I said emotionlessly.
On the other end of the phone, Elijah was silent for a moment before saying earnestly, "Natalia, I shouldn't have hit you in the hospital today. Jenna was also partly responsible for this—"
There he went on and on again with his usual talk. I supposed Skylar must have told him about Quinn standing up for me at the rooftop garden. That was why Elijah didn't want to fall out with me completely.
"I'll pay for the medical fees," I interrupted Elijah. I thought for a moment and continued, "If you really still treat me like your own daughter, agree to my request and give me the documents I need."
