"Are they not with you?" I asked, shocked.
Jess was stunned. He explained, "No. When I went out to answer a call, they were still in the room."
York went to Raelynn's seat, picked up her glass, and examined it carefully. He frowned and said, "Your assistant might be in danger now."
"What?" My mind went blank for a moment before I realized that York meant that John had drugged Raelynn's drink.
Raelynn was in grave danger.
I looked at Jess and asked him loudly, "Where did John take Raelynn?"
"Calm down. I'll call John and ask him. Maybe there's a misunderstanding," Jess comforted me as he called John.
When the call did not go through, Jess's expression turned ugly. He frowned and cursed under his breath.
I was as anxious as a cat on hot bricks. I blamed myself for not paying more attention to Raelynn, giving John the opportunity to commit a crime.
York speculated out loud, "If John had planned to drug Raelynn, he might have brought her back to his room."
I asked Jess anxiously, "What's John's room number?"
Jess thought for a while and quickly pressed the elevator button. He said, "Follow me!"
I followed Jess into the elevator, but York didn't come in. He smiled and waved at us. He said, "I'll stay out of this. I hope Miss Novak is okay."
The elevator door closed, and York disappeared from our sight.
I didn't have time to criticize York for his indifference. Looking at the floor numbers shown on the elevator screen, I prayed hard that nothing bad would happen to Raelynn.
We came to a suite on the 32nd floor. Jess pounded on the door with his fist while shouting something in Lugdish.
I also shouted, "Raelynn, are you in there?"
No one answered. Had John brought Raelynn somewhere else?
"Does John have any other residence in Enschester?" I asked Jess hurriedly. Then, I thought of something and said, "Oh right! Let's go to the garage. He might have brought Raelynn to the car."
Jess's brows furrowed tighter as he cursed, "If that old fart really dares to commit a crime, I won't let him off!"
We were ready to head back to the elevator.
Suddenly, we heard a noise coming from inside the suite.
There was the sound of something breaking, followed by a woman's painful shriek.
"Raelynn is inside!" I doubled back to the suite and banged on the door. I shouted, "Raelynn! Are you okay?"
"Get out of the way." Jess pulled me away. He took a few steps back, then charged forward and kicked open the door.
The wooden door shattered with a kick. I pushed the door open and rushed into the room.
The moment I saw Raelynn, I felt a lump in my throat, and tears instantly flowed down my face.
Raelynn was lying on the bed with her hands and feet tied up in chains. There were a few bloody marks caused by whipping on her skin.
John was standing by the bed with a whip in his hand and a smug smile on his face.
"Ms. Hinton," Raelynn called me weakly when she saw me. Her eyes were frighteningly red.
John was a little delirious. He pointed at me and provoked me in Ombrish, "Beauty, do you want to join us?"
"Fuck you!" Jess shouted angrily and punched John in the face. "How dare you commit a crime under my watch? You're so dead!"
After saying that, he punched the other side of John's face.
John screamed in pain. He spat out a mouthful of blood and a few broken teeth.
Jess's punches seemed to have made John sober. He fell to the ground and pointed at Jess with a trembling finger, mumbling something.
Jess seized John. Jess's voice was cold as he said, "You still want to threaten me? Know this. With what you did, no one would seek justice for you even if I killed you today. But I have a better way to torture you than killing you."
Jess spoke in Neglanese. John couldn't understand him, but he was so intimidated by Jess's presence that he was trembling.
Jess grabbed John's chin.
Then, Jess sneered and gave John an uppercut on the jaw.
John screamed in agony. I could hear the sound of teeth breaking in John's mouth.
"I think it's time for you to get a set of dentures," Jess mocked.
Just as Jess was teaching John a lesson, I untied the chains on Raelynn.
Her clothes had been torn into pieces, and I couldn't find a new set of clothes for her to change into.
Hurried footsteps came from the corridor. The hotel's security guards must have heard the commotion and rushed over.
Jess got up and looked at Raelynn, who was lying on the bed, unable to move. He took off his coat without hesitation and wrapped Raelynn in it before the security guards came in.
Raelynn began to tremble uncontrollably, perhaps due to the pain from her wounds or her psychological trauma.
"You're safe now. I'll send you to the hospital," comforted Jess as he carried Raelynn in his arms. He turned to the security guards and said, "This piece of trash here kidnapped and injured this lady. Please call the police. I'll contact the police later for my testimony."
Jess and I drove Raelynn to the hospital.
The doctor treated her wounds and prescribed her a tranquilizer. Raelynn finally fell asleep after taking the medicine.
Jess was smoking in the stairwell. When I found him, his expression was grim.
"Mr. Bird, I thank you on behalf of Raelynn," I said. If Jess was not around today, Raelynn might not have gotten away with just a few wounds. She might have been violated by John.
Jess stubbed out his cigarette, looked at me, and said seriously, "You're welcome. It's a man's duty to protect women. I loathe men who abuse women."
Jess was a good man with respectable moral standards. To be honest, I was surprised to hear this from him.
I asked with concern, "Will your work be affected by this incident?"
After all, John was Jess's superior. The Dazzle Group might side with John and fire Jess instead.
Jess smiled and replied in a relaxed tone, "I've contacted the police. We have footage from the hotel's surveillance cameras. The police can trace drugs left in Miss Novak's glass. Miss Novak's medical report will be used as evidence too. John will definitely be charged for committing a crime. Jail time is awaiting him. So you don't have to worry about me. I've reported this incident to the chairman of the Dazzle Group. The company has issued a dismissal notice to John."
Jess was well-organized and smart. No wonder he was placed in an important position by the Dazzle Group at such a young age.
I heaved a sigh of relief and joked with him, "I underestimated you. Mr. Bird, you're skilled. If you are fired by the Dazzle Group, you can consider joining the boxing championship as a professional boxer."
Jess said, "I learned my martial arts from Quinn. Didn't you know that Quinn was the champion of our university taekwondo league?"
