Stunned, I shook my head and said, "I didn't know."
"He didn't tell you?" Jess was very surprised. Then, he seemed to have realized something and said, "That's true. With his personality, he won't easily tell you about his embarrassing stories. This was something I heard him mention when we were drunk one time."
I didn't show any interest in this topic, but Jess went on and told me the story.
Jess said, "When Quinn was young, he saved a girl who was bullied by some hooligans because he was a busybody. Later on, those hooligans were arrested. One of the hooligans had a brother that was quite influential in the underworld. In order to avenge the hooligan, the brother kidnapped Quinn and beat him up. Quinn's grandfather sent people to search everywhere and eventually saved him.
"Quinn was beaten up badly. Not only did his grandfather not feel sorry for him, but he also blamed Quinn for being useless and embarrassing the family. After Quinn's injuries healed, his grandfather sent him to receive taekwondo training. His coach was very strict. He asked Quinn to fight him every day. When Quinn lost, he was not allowed to eat and could only drink water. Of course a starving child with zero basics in martial arts could not beat a professional coach. As you can imagine, Quinn was beaten up badly again.
"As for how Quinn won in the end, I'm not sure. But I've seen him fight before. He was crazy. It's still scary when I think about it now."
My heart skipped a beat as I stood rooted to the ground. I remembered Quinn being absent from school for a long time.
I asked around. No one knew where he had gone.
Only now did I find out that he had gone through so much after saving me.
Was this one of the reasons he hated me? That's why he told me to stay away from him when I looked for him at school after the incident.
Did he ever regret saving me?
I stopped myself from delving into my thoughts. I lowered my eyes and pretended to be nonchalant. "I see. Quinn and I are divorced. I'm not interested in his stories."
I excused myself and went to lunch.
In the afternoon, Raelynn woke up.
She looked at me with a pale face while lying on bed.
I comforted her, saying, "That bastard has been captured. You're safe now. Rest well and don't think too much, okay?"
"Okay." She nodded obediently, but she still looked anxious.
I asked her if she was hungry. Raelynn wanted to say something but hesitated. She called me, "Ms. Hinton..."
"You can tell me anything." I encouraged her to speak, realizing she had something on her mind.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes and said in a soft voice, "After I was drugged, he took off my clothes and took photos of me."
Damn it! John actually took nude photos of Raelynn!
I understood Raelynn's concern. If the photos were leaked, Raelynn's life would be ruined.
Raelynn was young and had never been in a relationship.
I had experienced how damaging gossip and cyberbullying were, so I was more anxious than Raelynn was to protect her privacy.
I thought of contacting the police and asking them to check John's phone.
Jess said, "I've deleted the photos in John's phone." Just as I was about to make a call, Jess entered the ward with food.
"When did you delete them?" I was pleasantly surprised.
Jess explained, "After knocking John to the ground, I found his phone on the table and suddenly thought of some crimes I had seen. Perverts like him might threaten the victims with photos to prevent them from calling the police. So, I checked his phone and deleted all the photos."
He looked at Raelynn and his voice softened. He continued, "And I've paid the security guards and asked them to sign a confidentiality agreement. They won't tell anyone about what happened. Miss Novak, no one will mention this again in the future."
I was impressed by how meticulous Jess was.
Raelynn's eyes were watery yet bright. She looked at Jess and said softly, "Thank you, Mr. Bird."
Jess smiled and placed the bag he was holding on the table. He said to Raelynn, "I bought some food. I hope it suits your taste."
I opened the bag and saw a bowl of oatmeal with some snacks.
Raelynn's wounds had yet to heal, and her arm was bandaged.
I picked up the oatmeal and was about to feed it to her when my phone rang. It was Elijah.
"I need to pick up this call." I told them as I walked out of the ward and answered the phone. "Hello?"
"Natalia, are you free tomorrow at noon? Jenna wants to see you," Elijah said.
I asked him bluntly, "Did she agree to hand me the documents?"
Elijah answered, "I've discussed this with Jenna. She respects your decision, but she wants to see you first."
Jenna insisted on meeting me. Although I had a premonition that something was off, I agreed to it.
I said, "Okay. See you at noon tomorrow."
Hanging up, I hurried back to the ward.
Through the small window on the door, I saw Jess sitting by Raelynn's bed and feeding her.
Raelynn was blushing as she stared at Jess. She looked beautiful.
Love was clearly in the air.
I smiled. If I went in and disturbed them now, Raelynn would definitely curse me.
I tactfully sent her a WhatsApp message saying that I had something to do at the last minute before leaving the hospital.
The next afternoon, I went to Jenna's ward on time.
Before we entered the room, Elijah repeatedly reminded me, "Natalia, I know you feel wronged, but Jenna is fragile. Can you apologize to her when you meet her? I've told her about the documents, and she's agreed."
I nodded and said calmly, "Understood."
If all they wanted was an apology, I didn't mind doing that.
Then, he pushed open the door with a smile and called out gently, "Jenna, Natalia is here to see you."
On the hospital bed, Jenna looked haggard. Her gaze was no longer as domineering as before. Instead, she looked tired and old.
I stared at her and said, "I'm sorry. I only said those words out of anger the other day."
Jenna did not get up. She stared at me with a gloomy gaze. Then, she let out a long sigh and said in a hoarse voice, "You won't even call me 'Mom' now."
I pursed my lips and avoided her sharp gaze. I said emotionlessly, "Thank you for agreeing to hand me the documents. I will cover your medical expenses and meals during your hospital stay. Feel free to tell me if you have other requests. If it's within my means, I'm open to discussion."
Jenna told Elijah, "I want to talk to Natalia alone."
Jenna looked at me with a complicated gaze while waiting for Elijah to leave the room.
