The woman had been bought off by Skylar. Every line she spoke had been carefully rehearsed beforehand. Her theatrics had me frowning in frustration.
I couldn't possibly explain myself to this crowd, especially when their eager, nosy expressions revealed that the truth was irrelevant to them. They were here solely for the drama.
"Natalia, so this is your real mother?" Diana's sarcastic voice cut through the murmurs. "Who would've thought she'd be in... that line of work? I guess she had no choice but to abandon you back then. But look at you two now—reunited at last. Congratulations."
I cast her a cold glance, then turned to Jess and said calmly, "Mr. Bird, my sister is... mentally unstable. I apologize for the disturbance. I'll take her away so as not to cause further trouble."
Jess nodded and said reassuringly, "Take care."
Quick on her feet, Raelynn immediately summoned the security guards. "Please escort these two out."
"Who are you calling mentally unstable?" Skylar shrieked. "Natalia, you're really heartless. Poisoning your adoptive mother and now chasing your biological mother away? What kind of monster are you?"
The two security guards, following Jess's order, grabbed Skylar's arms to lead her away.
Skylar shot the woman a look, and she suddenly dropped to her knees in front of me, sobbing dramatically as she grasped my feet. "It's my fault! I failed as a mother—I abandoned you. But I'm here to make it right. Please forgive me, or I'll kill myself."
Her abrupt outburst rattled even the unflappable Raelynn. The guards hesitated, unsure of how to proceed, and dared not approach the hysterical woman.
Raelynn leaned in and whispered, "What do we do now?"
It was a vicious move. No matter what action I took, the damage was done. By tomorrow, everyone would believe that this woman was my biological mother, and her sordid story would spread like wildfire, dragging my name through the mud.
I was in a bind, racking my brain for a solution when a cool, commanding voice broke through the tension. "I'm late, but it seems I've arrived just in time for the grand finale."
Quinn, dressed in a tailored suit, strode into the hall, his sharp gaze taking in the scene. For a brief second, his eyes met mine before shifting to the woman kneeling on the floor.
All eyes were on him; even the woman fell silent.
"Quinn." Diana smiled demurely, stepping forward to hook her arm around his.
Quinn barely looked at her as he moved past her toward Jess. He said in a steady voice, "Mr. Bird, I must apologize for the commotion tonight. Natalia is employed by the Madden Group, and I take full responsibility for what happened."
Catching his drift, Jess's eyes lit up, and a faint smile tugged at his lips. "Indeed, it's been a bit disruptive. I was hoping you could offer an explanation, Mr. Madden."
Quinn glanced over his shoulder and asked, "Finn, have you contacted Professor Zimmerman?"
Finn responded promptly, "Yes, Mr. Madden. Professor Zimmerman has agreed to help. We only need hair samples from both of them, and he'll provide us with the DNA test results within an hour."
A ripple of murmurs spread through the room.
"Professor Zimmerman? The dean of Briarwood Medical Institute?" a guest exclaimed.
"Who else could it be? It shows just how powerful Mr. Madden is," another guest commented.
Quinn walked toward me, his gaze meeting mine for a few seconds before he asked for a few strands of my hair. "For years, I've been trying to help you find your biological parents but with little success. Perhaps today, we'll finally have some answers," he said.
I blinked in surprise. He said this on purpose for everyone to hear, to counter the rumors brewing in the room. Quinn was protecting me.
