                    Killian’s POV
In the year Tara has been at Mystic Crystal, I have never heard the animalistic and inhuman sounds she’s making during her labor with Amira and Everett come out of her mouth. She wants to try to give birth naturally and without medication but the pain is wearing her down. She broke my mom’s hand during a contraction and the bed rails are cracked from her squeezing.
“How are you doing, love?” I ask her gently as I wipe the sweat from her forehead with a cool cloth.
“Killian, I don’t think I can do it. How am I supposed to be Queen if I can’t even give birth without medication?” she cries out in insecurity.
“Baby, there is no shame in getting pain medicine to get through labor and delivery. You’re going to be too worn out to push or enjoy them at the rate you’re going. BUT this is your show. I’ll support whatever you decide.” I say as I rub her arm and her eyes fill with tears again.
“I’m so disappointed in myself.” she sobs bringing her hands over her face.
“Alpha, what did you do to our Luna?!” Dr. Singh shouts before I can respond to Tara. Tara is quick to stop the doctor and explain what happened before breaking down again.
“The Alpha is right Luna. Labor is no joke. Most humans say it’s like having 20+ bones broken at the same time and their babies are much smaller than ours.” Dr. Singh tells Tara but she continues to sob.
The doctor tells Tara to lay back and does a cervix check to see how much longer this will go on. Tara has been in labor for 16 hours. Her water only broke after the doctor broke it for her 3 hours ago and the contractions got so much worse afterwards. Worry flashes across the doctor’s face but quickly fades. She leaves the room and comes back with a portable ultrasound machine. She squirts the jelly on Tara’s belly and moves it around while looking at the screen for a few minutes before standing up with urgency.
“Luna, we have to get you into surgery. Both babies are breech.” she says calmly to Tara although her eyes are wild with panic.
They wheel Tara off to the operating room and assist me in scrubbing in so I can be with her for the c-section. I am decked out in a hair net, beard net, shoe covers, and a whole jumper of medical fabric before washing my hands thoroughly. We walk into a large white room with Tara’s hospital bed in the middle of the room and the medical equipment and all along the walls. The lights are unbelievably bright and it smells of sanitizer. The nurse leads me to a stool right next to my mate’s head and has me sit down. I kiss her forehead and rub her arms to calm her nerves while she silently sobs on the table. Two nurses wheel in two baby warmers and Dr. Singh walks in behind them.
“Let’s have some Alpha pups!” she says loudly as she walks towards Tara. She walks to Tara completely covered like I am but with gloves and a face mask as well.
“Killian… I’m scared.” Tara whispers and I lean down to kiss her gently. I rest my forehead on hers and whisper how strong she is and how much I love her in her ear to bring her some peace.
Before we even realize the surgery is happening, a loud cry echoes throughout the room. Our eyes go wide at the realization that our first baby has been born.
“Our future Alpha has been born!” Dr. Singh says handing off the baby to a team of nurses. A few moments later and another loud cry joins our son’s cries.
“The princess has arrived.” Dr. Singh says as she hands our daughter to the second team of nurses. I’m staring at them in awe just waiting to hold my babies.
“Go see our kids, Killian.” Tara says as she watches me. I nod and walk over to the team taking care of Everett and my eyes fill with tears.
“Everett is perfect baby. He has your red hair and my blue eyes.” I say loudly enough for her to hear me.
“Alpha, Luna… the young Alpha weighs 19 lbs 12 oz and he is 24 1/4 inches long. He’s quite a big boy.” the nurse tells me and I can’t help the smile that forms on my face. Once he’s swaddled up, they hand him to me and we walk over to the team taking care of Amira.
“What’s she look like?” Tara asks tiredly.
“Oh, she’s so beautiful, love. My dark brown hair and your bright green eyes. Both of them are wide awake and looking around. It’s crazy.” I say back to her.
“Alpha, Luna… Forgive my manners but you guys make massive children. The princess weighed in at 18 lbs 12 oz and measured 24 inches long.” the nurse says and I laugh. My tiny mate gave me giant babies.
The nurse swaddles Amira up and hands her to me but as I turn around to walk towards Tara, the monitors start going crazy and the operating room turns into chaos. Tara is pale and her eyes are shut.
“IRIS?! BABY WAKE UP!” I shout at her and try to move towards her with the twins in my arms but the nurses are holding me back. I continue to try to push through without hurting my babies to no avail. My chest is aching and it feels like my heart is being ripped out.
“GET THE ALPHA AND THE BABIES OUT OF HERE!” Dr. Singh shouts and suddenly Nicole, Jude, Ian, and Allen are gently but firmly corralling me out of the operating room into a smaller recovery room. A few moments later my parents and sister walk in and I pass the babies off to them before exiting the room into the hallway to wait for the doctor.
“Alpha?”
“What is it?”
“We are on our way back with an injured she wolf. We found her unconscious in the woods during patrol.”
“Yeah ok thanks. Do me favor and talk with Nicole and Jude about this. I have an emergency taking place.” I say before closing the link and putting a mental block up.
I’m pacing the hallway while Nicole and Jude stand against the wall watching me when I feel a pain in my chest. It’s excruciating and feels like half of my soul is being ripped from my body. This is worse than what I imagine rejection feels like.
“Mate…” Remus says before letting out a mournful howl and realization hits me. This is the pain of losing a mate. Tara is dead.
“NOOOOOOOO!! GODDESS NOOO! IRIS!” I scream as I drop to my knees.
I let out a roar of pain and sorrow that shakes the very foundation of the hospital. Fur starts to sprout from my arms and my bones start breaking as Remus tries to force us to shift. Jude and Nicole jump on me and try to hold me down but it’s no use. They’re no match for Remus and I.
“WE NEED A SEDATIVE! FAST! WE CAN’T STOP HIM MUCH LONGER!” Nicole screams at the medical staff. I’m half shifted and Remus and I are in a painful battle for control as we shove each other’s consciousness back in forth in my head. I feel 4 small pinches in my neck and suddenly the battle stops. Remus backs away whimpering and darkness starts to consume my vision.
“My mate… she’s gone.” is the last thing I say before I lose consciousness.
Jude’s POV
“Gone? Nicole he just said his mate is gone.” I say looking down at my unconscious, broken Alpha. He couldn’t mean…
“Gamma, we are arriving at the pack hospital with the injured she-wolf. Is it safe to come in? We heard the Alpha.” one of the patrol guards says through our mind link interrupting my thoughts.
“Yeah, it’s fine. I’ll meet you at the front desk.” I say before letting Nicole what is going on. I grab a few nurses and head to the front where the patrol warriors are waiting.
As I’m approaching the front desk, the scent of oranges and chocolate smacks me in the face. My mouth begins to water and my stomach erupts in butterflies as my wolf, Conan, does circles in my head howling mate. I continue looking around for the source and realize the metallic smell of blood is now mixing with the orange and chocolate. When I reach the front desk and discover where the scent is coming from, my heart breaks and a possessive growl escapes my throat.
“MINE!” Conan says as we lay our eyes on the unconscious she-wolf in the patrol guard’s arms. The warrior freezes at my growl and I instruct the nurses to escort him to a room with my mate.
They quickly run to the closest empty hospital room and once the warrior lays her down, he takes off back to the border. I look down at my mate and my heart aches.
“Gamma… We need to take her to clean her up. We will be right back with her. I’ll send someone in to put fresh bedding down.” a nurse says eyeing me cautiously and I nod in understanding.
“What’s up, bro?” Nicole says peeking his head in.
“That girl… She’s my mate.” I say with tear filled eyes.
“That’s great! Why do you look so upset about it?” he asks obviously confused.
“She’s hurt. She was unconscious, filthy, and bleeding. My heart is breaking.” I respond quietly.
He nods and sits down beside me committing himself to waiting with me in an understanding silence. After about an hour, the nurses wheel her back in and my breath hitches in my chest. Her long black hair is no longer ratted and covered in mud. Her pale, olive skin is clean but covered in bruises and cuts. She’s still unconscious but I’m pretty sure I’m already in love with her. I sit in the chair beside her bed and hold her hand willing her to wake up.
“Can you feel her wolf, Conan?”
“She is very weak but I feel her.”
That brings me some relief. Her wolf is still there which means she should be healing. Unfortunately, I don’t know how severe the wounds she sustained before the patrol found her were. It’s nothing more than playing a guessing game trying to figure out when she will wake up.
After about 3 hours of sitting and staring at my mate, Nicole walks in the room and nods his head for me to come out into the hallway. I plant a small kiss on her forehead and get up to follow him. We walk a couple doors down into the room they put Killian in and he’s awake. His face is blotchy and his eyes are red and swollen from crying. His hands are clenched into fists with his knuckles white from squeezing and blood seeping from his palms as his claws dig into his palm. No words are spoken. Nicole and I sit on either side of his bed in silence, supporting our friend and Alpha.
Roughly 20 minutes has passed and we remain silent but the door to Killian’s room opens slowly and in walks a very exhausted looking Dr. Singh.
“How are you feeling, Alpha? I’m told they gave you 4 injections of Haloperidol and a small amount of wolfsbane.” she says calmly. Without a doubt, she not only heard about it but she heard his outburst earlier and is concerned but he does not respond. She nods her head as if she understands and begins checking his vitals to ensure everything is okay with his health. After confirming he’s in relatively good health, she pulls the extra chair up to the end of the bed.
“We need to talk about the Luna.”
