Lily’s POV
The ropes dug into my wrists, but I didn’t feel the pain. No, my mind was too busy with other thoughts, too focused on the unanswered questions swirling around me. Why wasn’t I dead? Why was I here, alive, while the others weren’t? Most would have been terrified by the cold stone walls, the ominous shadows, and the silent threat of death that seemed to hang in the air. But not me. Not anymore.
I had seen enough darkness to know that death wasn’t the end—it was just a part of the cycle. What interested me now was the man who was responsible for so many lives lost. The Alpha King.
He was everything I had heard about, and yet, there was something about him that felt… off. He was ruthless, cold, and dangerous, but the more I observed, the more I noticed the cracks beneath his unyielding façade.
His scar. That jagged line across his face, running from his left eyebrow to just below his eye, had always intrigued me. It was a mark of someone who had fought, who had survived something horrific. But I couldn’t shake the thought—what if that scar was a reflection of the monster he truly was?
The door creaked open, breaking me from my thoughts, and I didn’t even need to look up to know who was entering. His presence filled the room like a dark cloud, heavy and suffocating. I could feel him before I saw him, the air shifting around him as he stepped in. His every movement exuded power, control, and a terrifying, almost magnetic authority.
And still, I wasn’t afraid.
I lifted my chin, meeting his gaze without flinching, despite the pulse of adrenaline that ran through me. The Alpha King’s eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that sent a shiver down my spine. He was dangerous, yes. But there was something in his eyes—something flickering beneath the surface—that told me he was also vulnerable. And I wasn’t about to let him hide behind that mask any longer.
"I know you’re lying to the people , pretending to be good yet you are not," I said, my voice steady, unwavering.
His lips twisted into a dangerous smirk, and for a moment, I wondered if I had miscalculated. But I quickly silenced that doubt. This was my only chance to strike—mentally, if not physically.
"You think I wouldn’t kill you just because you’re my mate?" he growled, his voice low and dripping with menace.
I was shocked , Mate! The Alpha king's mate! A small smile crept on my lips. "Ah! That's why? And I am the Luna queen right?"
The words rolled off my tongue with a sharp, purposeful edge.
The Alpha’s eyes narrowed, the temperature in the room seeming to drop. His movements were predatory, his every step purposeful as he closed the distance between us. His hands gripped painfully on my chin. The muscles in his arms straining as if barely controlling the beast within him.
"You think you have any power here?" he snarled, his voice a dangerous growl. "You are nothing. A mere mortal who knows nothing of the forces at play. And I didn't signed up for a mate"
But I didn’t flinch.
"No," I said, my voice soft but filled with steel. "You’re wrong. I’m exactly where I need to be. And I know far more than you think."
The Alpha let out an uproarus laughter. I could feel the heat radiating off him, the raw power that was almost suffocating. And yet, I stood my ground, refusing to be cowed by him. He might have the throne, the power, the kingdom. But I didn't care.
"You think you can play this game?"he hissed, his eyes flashing with a mix of anger.
A small, sly smile curled on my lips. "I’m not playing," I said softly. "I’m here to win."
For a moment, the silence stretched between us, thick and oppressive. I could feel the battle of wills in the air, the tension crackling like electricity. But it was more than just that. There was something else—a pull, a connection that neither of us could deny. The bond between us, the one that made us mates, was there, but it was fractured. The lines were blurred.
"You’re not going to kill me, are you?" I asked, my voice almost playful now. I tilted my head slightly, watching him with curious eyes.
He didn’t answer immediately, but I saw it—the flicker of uncertainty in his gaze.
"You’re my mate," he finally said, his voice strained with frustration. "And that’s why you’re still alive. But don’t mistake that for mercy. I will not hesitate to kill you if it serves my purpose."
I laughed softly, the sound barely more than a whisper. "Then I’ll be the Luna Queen, and I’ll crush the Southern Pack—your enemies—my enemies" I said, thinking of Julia, my heart beating with hatred.
His eyes glowed with fury, but there was something deeper lurking in them now.
"You have no idea what you're dealing with, human" he said, his voice dangerously low.
"But you won’t kill me," I replied, my tone quiet, almost soothing. "Because deep down, you know I’m your equal. And if you destroy me, you destroy yourself."
His hand shot out, grabbing my chin again with brutal force. He forced me to look up at him, his breath hot against my skin. His eyes were wild now, full of rage and something else—something darker.
"You think you can control me?" he snarled. He raised his hand and a smokey dark arrow arose, pointing at me. "I'll kill you anytime I want. But, I like your spirit. You seem like a strong woman and I'll keep you" he said withdrawing his hand and I was left Wondering how he could do that.
"I don’t want to control you," I said softly. "I just want to survive. And I know you want that too."
