The morning air was cool when I stirred, stretching lazily beneath the warm blankets. The scent of pine and something uniquely him still clung to the sheets. I reached out, only to find the bed beside me empty. My brows furrowed as I propped myself up on my elbows.
"Valen?" I called groggily.
The sound of approaching footsteps made me turn just as Valen stepped out from the other room, dressed in a dark, fitted workout shirt and sweatpants. His damp hair clung slightly to his forehead, as if he’d already begun his morning training. His eyes flickered with something unreadable before his lips curved into a smirk.
"Ready for a ride, my queen?"
I blinked, still half-asleep. "Huh?"
Valen didn’t bother explaining. Instead, he strode over and dragged me out of bed, completely ignoring my grumbles. Within moments, I found myself stuffed into comfortable clothes, my hair hastily tied back.
"Okay, what are we doing here?" I demanded as he led me outside. The mansion's towering walls gave way to the thick woods beyond, the scent of damp earth filling the air.
Valen didn’t answer. Instead, he stepped back, his smirk widening as he rolled his shoulders.
Then, before I could process what was happening—
He shifted.
His clothes ripped apart as his form stretched and morphed. Where Valen once stood, a massive wolf now took his place—a stunning creature of smoky grey fur, lined with streaks of white along his back and chest. His golden eyes still burned with intelligence, watching me closely.
I gasped, startled, stepping back instinctively.
He was huge, towering over me with powerful muscles rippling beneath his thick fur. But the moment my initial shock faded, I found myself… awestruck.
"You’re…" I exhaled, trailing off.
Beautiful. Powerful. Mesmerizing.
As I reached out hesitantly, my fingers brushed against his fur. It was soft, thick beneath my fingertips.
Then, a memory crashed into me.
The dream.
The same wolf, this wolf—golden eyes, powerful stance. But in that dream, another wolf had lurked in the shadows, watching. One with jet-black fur, marred by a long scar slashing across its face.
The moment the image flashed in my mind, I stiffened.
Valen’s wolf must have sensed my change, because his ears flattened slightly.
"Does she not like me? Am I ugly? Of which I doubt because I'm super handsome" His wolf’s voice was soft, almost hesitant.
I gasped, eyes widening. I had just heard that. Clearly.
"No! Too cute and fluffy," I blurted out without thinking, followed by a nervous chuckle.
Valen stiffened. His wolf’s ears perked up.
"Did she just… heard us?" Valen’s wolf asked, confusion laced in his tone.
"Maybe she saw our expressions and guessed," Valen responded cautiously in his mind.
I heard that too.
I quickly ignored it, heart hammering as I scrambled to keep my face neutral. I had no idea what was happening to me.
Before I could process it further, Valen’s wolf lowered himself, bending his front legs as if urging me to climb on.
I hesitated.
"Come on, Julia. I won’t drop you," his voice rumbled in my mind.
Swallowing my nerves, I climbed onto his back. The moment my hands tangled in his thick fur, Valen took off into the woods.
A sharp gasp escaped my lips as we raced through the trees, dodging branches and weaving between trunks with perfect precision. The wind whipped against my face, the thrill of the ride setting my heart pounding.
It was exhilarating.
For the first time in a while, I felt free—like nothing else mattered except this moment.
By the time we returned to the mansion, I was breathless from laughter. Valen slowed his pace as we reached the steps, then jogged up the stairs, still in wolf form. I followed, shaking my head in amusement.
At the dresser, he shifted back, seamlessly pulling on his clothes. I tried not to stare at the muscles shifting beneath his skin, but Valen caught my gaze and smirked knowingly.
"Like what you see, my queen?"
I huffed. "You wish. "
He chuckled but said nothing, instead turning to a wooden drawer. From it, he pulled out a small golden box.
Something about it made my breath hitch.
Valen opened it slowly, revealing an exquisite necklace inside.
The pendant was a stunning moonstone, its surface shimmering between shades of blue and violet whenever it caught the light. The delicate chain was woven from both silver and gold, with tiny ancient runes etched along its edges, glowing faintly.
It was… breathtaking.
"This belonged to my mother," Valen murmured, his tone softer now. "She told me to give it to my mate, before she died, And now…" He lifted the necklace gently. "I want you to have it."
A lump formed in my throat. Valen's mom! A piece of her… something that had been waiting for me all this time.
Valen stepped forward, reaching behind me as he clasped the chain around my neck. The metal was cool, but the moment it rested against my skin, a warmth spread through me—almost like the pendant was alive, pulsing with hidden energy.
"It will protect you when I’m not there," Valen added.
I touched it lightly, swallowing the sudden wave of emotion.
"It’s beautiful," I whispered.
For a moment, we just stood there. Valen’s fingers lingered against my skin, his golden eyes flickering, holding my cheeks as he stepped closer.
He leaned in, lips just inches from mine—
Then panic shot through me.
"SCHOOL! I’M LATE TO SCHOOL!" I yelped, stepping back abruptly.
Valen blinked. "…Excuse me?"
"I need to go! Now!"
His jaw tightened. "You don’t need to study. I can give you everything you need."
I glared. "That’s not the point! I want to study, Valen!"
He crossed his arms. "You’re my Luna. You don’t have to waste time—"
"No! I’m going!"
His eyes narrowed. For a moment, I thought he’d refuse.
Then, after a tense silence, he sighed.
"Fine," he muttered. "Let’s see if you can keep up with all this studying you’re so obsessed with."
I smirked. "Watch me, Alpha."
He rolled his eyes but didn’t argue further.
I grabbed my bag, heart still pounding—not just from the argument, but from the lingering heat of our interrupted moment.
As I rushed out the door, I could still feel the weight of the necklace against my skin, a silent promise from Valen.
The one who I seem to have fallen in love with.
