Lily's POV
"Good job, Lily."
The Duke's voice echoed across the stone courtyard, and I wiped my sword clean, watching as the body of my training partner-a slave picked from the dungeon-crumpled to the ground. His death didn't bother me. He was weak, nothing more than a tool for my improvement. Every life I took, every battle I won, brought me closer to the power I desired.
Months had passed since I ran away, since I threw away my old life of weakness, of jealousy, of being overlooked. Now, I stood at Damon's side, the Alpha King, the ruler of the North. My transformation was undeniable. I had become stronger, sharper, more ruthless. I could feel it every day, the shift in my own body, in my mind. No longer was I the girl who had craved attention and approval. Now, I was someone to be feared.
I glanced down at the corpse, a faint smirk tugging at my lips. The Duke, who stood behind me with a thoughtful expression, was silent for a moment. Finally, he spoke again.
"You've improved, Lily. Very impressive."
I didn't respond, but a dark satisfaction settled deep within me. There was no greater praise than that. My training had paid off. The blood, sweat, and effort had turned me into a formidable force. I had learned to wield my sword like a master, and every time I fought, I grew more lethal. But I wasn't satisfied. Not yet.
The grand meeting was coming. The day when all the Alphas and their Lunas would gather. The day when my identity would finally be revealed. It would be my moment. My rise to the throne. I would stand at Damon's side as his queen, his equal, and the entire kingdom would bow before me.
I couldn't wait for it.
The thought of my cousin, Julia, made my insides twist with a mixture of bitterness and contempt. Julia, the weak human who had been chosen as the Luna, who somehow secured her place by Damon's side, despite being so insignificant. She was nothing. Her role was a mockery of what a Luna should be. A true Luna wasn't just a symbol, a fragile human meant to stand by the Alpha's side. A true Luna was a partner, a force to be reckoned with. Julia had no idea what it meant to hold that kind of power. She was a fool.
The Duke's voice interrupted my thoughts. "Are you alright, my lady?"
I turned to face him, my expression unreadable. "Where is he?" I asked, my voice soft but insistent.
"The King?" The Duke raised an eyebrow. "He's in his chamber, of course."
I knew where he was-Damon, always in his forbidden chamber, hidden from the rest of the world. He spent hours there, immersed in his dark magic, preparing for the war that only he knew was coming.
I felt a twinge of jealousy, though it wasn't because I didn't understand his need for secrecy. It was because I wanted to be part of it. I wanted to understand the magic he wielded. Damon's power had always been a mystery to me. Dark, forbidden, and deadly. But I wasn't stupid. I knew that if I played my cards right, I could gain access to that power. I could learn the magic he guarded so fiercely.
There were times when I sneaked away, away from the prying eyes of the servants and the warriors. In the dead of night, when the castle was silent, I would slip into the shadowed corners and practice on my own. I wasn't supposed to be studying dark magic. But it called to me, and I couldn't resist. Damon may have been my mate, but I wouldn't wait forever to claim the power he guarded.
I could feel it, the magic swirling inside me, waiting to be unleashed. I was learning, bit by bit, each time I practiced. I didn't care if Damon found out. I didn't need him to approve of me. He was just a stepping stone.
But I knew Damon was dangerous, and that was why I hesitated. The way his dark smoke curled around his form when he was angry, the way his eyes glowed when he summoned his power-he was a force I couldn't afford to underestimate. And yet, part of me craved to be like him. Part of me longed to wield that same terrifying power, to make everyone bow before me, just as they did to Damon.
As the Duke left me to my thoughts, I walked toward the windows of the courtyard. The cool wind swept through my hair, and I closed my eyes for a moment, imagining the moment when I stood before the Alphas, my true identity revealed. When I was crowned, the world would finally know who I was. And Julia? She'd be nothing but a shadow in the background, her pathetic attempts at ruling nothing but a joke.
I needed to be patient. I needed to play my part until the right moment arrived.
"Lily."
The voice was low, commanding. It sent a shiver down my spine. I didn't need to turn around to know who it was. Damon.
I stood perfectly still, not daring to speak. His presence was overwhelming, suffocating, like the shadow of something far darker than the world could understand.
"You're training well, I see," Damon said, his tone both approving and dismissive at once. "But I sense you're not content."
I turned to face him, meeting his gaze. The dark smoke, the mark of his power, was swirling around him like a living thing, stretching toward me. It was so cold, so menacing, but it thrilled me. "I'm ready, Damon," I said, my voice firm, but beneath the surface, I could feel my heartbeat quicken. "I want more."
His smile was slow, calculating. "You want more than this?" he asked, stepping closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You want to control it? You want to become something even more powerful than... me, I know. I can read you perfectly."
I swallowed, the weight of his words hitting me. "Yes."
Damon smirked. "Be careful, Lily," he warned, his eyes glowing with dark intent. "Power is not something you can simply take. It demands a price."
"I'm willing to pay it," I replied, my voice steady, though inside, I could feel the fear twisting in my chest. He was dangerous. He was the king, the Alpha, and he ruled everything. But I would have what he had. I would be the one to break the chains and take his power as my own.
Damon leaned in closer, his voice a low growl. "We'll see. But remember, Lily. You are mine. And if you try any act of disobedience , I will destroy you."
His warning hung in the air like a storm, making me flinch. But I had my own ambitions now, ambitions that could not be stopped.
I would be the queen. The true ruler. No one could stand in my way.
Not even Damon. But I'll keep things low from now. I smiled sweetly. "Of course, my king. Obedience matters. Right?"
