"going somewhere?".
The voice slithered through the trees like smoke, coiling around their fear.
Lily stepped into view, her velvet cloak rippling behind her like shadows given form. Her eyes-no longer warm-burned with an eerie luminescence, gold threaded with a sickly green. Power hummed around her like a storm trapped in human skin.
"I really hoped you wouldn't disappoint me," she said, her gaze sweeping over them one by one. "But ambushes? My dear, little old classmates? That's just... sad."
She strolled around them, eyes gleaming with dark amusement.
"Jessy. Aiden. Wow, my memory's better than I thought. You three really came here to subdue me? Really?"
Julia's heart pounded against her ribs, but her body refused to move. Each breath was a struggle. The mimic had been bait-flawless bait-and they had walked straight into it.
"Let them go," she growled, her voice hoarse with effort.
Lily halted, her smile fading as she turned to Julia. "Why would I? When I've got you exactly where I wanted?"
She approached slowly, deliberately, like a queen savoring her victory.
"You always thought yourself better," she murmured. "Colder. Smarter. But in reality? The South crowned themselves a weak little Luna."
Her gaze dropped to the pendant around Julia's neck. She raised a hand and began chanting softly. Aiden's eyes came to realization and tried finding a way to distract her. His voice cut through the air.
"My, oh my... You've become even more stunning than before, Lily," he said with a crooked grin. "I mean, look at those curves."
Lily tilted her head, now facing him fully.
"Oh? Do I, wolf boy?" Her voice lowered dangerously. "Aren't you scared I'll rip you open and see if you're just as pretty on the inside?"
She moved toward him with feline grace. "Playing with magic you barely comprehend... Wolf sorcery isn't a toy, wolfy. You should've burned those records when you had the chance."
She raised her hand again. Aiden groaned, his body seizing as heat flooded through him like fire licking at his bones.
"AIDEN!" Jessy and Julia screamed in unison.
Jessy spat, eyes blazing. "You pathetic witch. What do you even want? What are you and Damon planning?"
Lily's attention snapped back to Julia. She yanked the pendant from her neck, letting it float in her palm like a prize.
"This. Too bad it fell into foolish hands... but now? I'll put it to proper use."
Julia gasped, fury lighting her face. "I knew you were obsessed with it. What's your plan, Lily?"
Aiden's jaw clenched, too weak to speak. The magic surrounding Lily was ancient, suffocating. His strength was swallowed whole.
Jessy whimpered beside him, straining against invisible bindings. Her feet hovered inches above the ground, trembling violently.
Lily's gaze turned to her last victim. "Damon?"
She paused, and with a flick of her fingers, the weight pressing down on them eased. Just enough to let them breathe.
"You should be worrying about dying... not about the Alpha King." She smiled darkly. "Now... let's have a little fun."
She raised her arms, chanting in a language older than time. The pendant hovered above her hands, glowing.
A deafening crack split the earth open. From the chasm rose a creature cloaked in swirling shadows-tall, horned, with eyes like molten silver.
Julia's breath caught. "What is that?" she whispered.
But before Lily could answer, a sudden blur of movement-and then Lily found herself slammed into the ground. Blood sprayed as she coughed violently, Valen's boot planted on her back.
"You have the audacity to hurt my people?" Valen snarled. His gaze fixed on her. "Is this what Damon teaches in the North?"
The spell snapped immediately Lily was thrown off, and Jessy, Aiden, and Julia were released. Julia scrambled to her feet, diving for the pendant now lying a few feet away.
The creature took a step forward. Reality warped around it-air distorted, the ground groaned. Jessy and Aiden stood tall, ready to face the monster.
They lunged, but the beast was too strong.
The creature towered over them-horns curved like a crown of bone, its body draped in a cloak of living shadows that flickered and lashed like whips in a storm. Its molten silver eyes glared, not with rage, but hunger.
Jessy leapt through the air, claws bared, landing a furious swipe across the beast's chest. The impact sent tendrils of black mist scattering-but not enough. The creature roared, its form solidifying again, faster, meaner.
Aiden bolted in from the left, his body shifted into silvery wolf fur, his fangs gleaming. He twisted mid-run and hurled, biting on its neck.
The creature scowled in pain as it lashed out, claws swiping a wide arc. Jessy dodged low-barely-dirt spraying behind her as the impact shattered trees behind them like matchsticks. Aiden wasn't so lucky; he caught the edge of the blow, flying backward and crashing into a tree with a sickening thud. He grunted, blood at the corner of his mouth-but he was already getting back up.
Valen's gaze shifted. His jaw tightened as he saw what was unfolding. Before he could act, Lily used the distraction to wrench free. But he was faster-his hand shot out, closing around her throat with terrifying force and speed.
His eyes turned molten gold. "You think a few magic tricks can stop me? You're mistaken."
Lily thrashed, feet kicking mid-air. "I'll tell Damon about this-!"
"Good. Because someone invading and attacking my pack won't be forgiven. Do this again," he growled, tightening his grip, "and I will kill you. Got it?"
"Julia, watch out!" Jessy's scream tore through the air.
Valen turned. His eyes widened in horror. As
the creature was nearly upon Julia. Its sharp teeth bared at her as it raised its sharp claws at her.
She crouched, screaming, arms shielding her face-pendant clutched tight in her hand.
Then suddenly there was a bright light emitted by the moonstone on the pendant, a blinding ,pure, radiant light.
The pendant exploded with brilliance just as the creature reached her. It shrieked, howling in pain as its shadowy form melted away into ash.
Lily's eyes went wide and with one final incantation, she vanished-escaping Valen's grip in a shimmer of dark magic.
The forest fell silent again as the four of them stood frozen, breathing hard, staring at the shattered remains of the moonstone pendant on the forest floor.
