                    Julia's pov
I sat at the farthest end of the class, taking in my surroundings. The room was filled with students, most of them wolves, with only four humans, including myself. My eyes landed on my cousin, Lily, in the corner, kissing a random wolf. I rolled my eyes, disgusted. Lily and I have never gotten along—rivals since childhood. She’s always off to night parties when my uncle’s not around, living in her own world.
“Can I sit here?” A warm voice pulled me from my thoughts. I turned to see a fair lady with a gentle smile, showing two dimples on her cheeks. She was tall, petite... and a wolf, of course. It was my first time meeting a friendly one.
“Sure,” I replied, managing a smile.
“By the way, I’m Jessy. You’re Julia, right? I don’t know why, but my wolf feels like I should fear you... that you’re special.”
I raised an eyebrow, somewhat amused. “Special?”
Jessy smiled knowingly. “Yeah, something about you feels... different.”
I didn’t have time to respond, as my eyes scanned the room again. This time, they locked onto Aiden’s. He was sitting with Sara, the girl always clinging to him. Aiden caught my gaze and winked at me. I quickly looked away, feeling uncomfortable.
Jessy chuckled, clearly noticing my reaction. “That’s Aiden. He’s the Beta’s brother, and a total playboy. Still doesn’t have a mate yet.”
We both stared at him, only to find Sara glaring at us, her eyes now a glowing dark green, burning with fury.
“People follow him because he’s the Beta’s brother, you know? Especially that slut over there,” Jessy added, her voice low.
We both giggled as we watched Sara’s fury grow. She looked ready to pounce.
Suddenly, everyone scrambled to find a seat and seconds later, the teacher walked in.
“Today’s topic will be about mates,” the teacher announced, and the class erupted in cheers and howls. I rolled my eyes, uninterested. Why did werewolf education have to be part of my first day?
“Who would like to volunteer?” the teacher asked, scanning the room.
A girl near the front jumped up eagerly, her face glowing. “Hello! I’m Thania, and I’m here to talk about mates.” She smiled, clearly excited. “Mates are a gift from the moon goddess, our better halves. Without them, we are incomplete. They light up our world, and our souls are connected. There are cases where humans can be mated to wolves, but it’s not as easy, because humans can’t feel the bond as wolves do…”
I tuned her out, rolling my eyes. She was blabbering on about some ancient fairy tale. My mind drifted to other things—like my plans for the future. I’d get my certificate, travel the world, and live life on my own terms. No mates involved.
“Julia, can you tell us about the mating ceremony Thania just mentioned?” The teacher’s voice snapped me back to reality. Everyone stared at me, waiting for an answer. Damn werewolves.
I froze, unsure of what to say. The whole room seemed to be holding its breath.
“Hmph. Still daydreaming about breaking the rules, human?” The class burst into laughter.
I felt heat rush to my cheeks, but the teacher didn’t give me a chance to recover. He moved on, the teasing lingering in the air.
The topic shifted to the leaders.
“Now, let’s talk about our leaders. Alpha King Damon is one of the most powerful alphas in the world. He’s admired for managing six large packs on his own. He’s a central figure in the government, and he’s done amazing things for the werewolf community. You know trying to maintain peace and balance. He's done a lot to us and we have no otherwise than to follow his lead.” The teacher’s voice was filled with respect. “Our own Alpha Valen is now our leader after the tragic death of his father. He’s extremely handsome as you guys already know. He's powerful just like the late alpha and we have faith in him that he'll protect us against disasters and other things, but… unfortunately, he hasn’t found his mate yet, our Luna.
The class went quiet. I could feel the sadness hanging in the air. Everyone admired Alpha Valen, but most of the girls seemed almost… hopeful. Maybe they were hoping they’d be the one to gain the favour of their moon goddess and be his mate.
“Tomorrow is the school library reopening,” the teacher continued. “Alpha Valen will be here to attend the ceremony. So, be on your best behavior.”
The moment the teacher finished, the girls erupted into excitement. They started talking about buying new dresses, doing their makeup—practically buzzing with anticipation.
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes again. The whole ‘mate’ obsession was ridiculous.
