The crowd, once alive with excitement, now stood frozen. Whispers cascaded through the courtyard like waves, each one feeding the rising tension. The bright decorations and banners celebrating the library's reopening blurred into insignificance, eclipsed by Alpha Valen's powerful declaration.
I couldn't breathe. My heart felt like it had stopped and sped up at the same time. I needed to move-to get away-but my legs felt like they were stuck in place, trembling under the weight of his words.
Mate.
The word reverberated through me, louder than the murmurs around me. My chest tightened, the sound of my own heartbeat drowning out everything else.
I finally forced myself to move, shoving past the throng of students. Faces blurred as I pushed forward, their stunned expressions and curious stares blending into a chaotic swirl. It didn't matter what they thought or what they were saying. I just needed to escape.
The once-familiar path out of the courtyard now felt endless. My sneakers slapped against the cobblestones, the sound sharp and uneven, echoing my hurried, unsteady movements. The vibrant lights of the event illuminated my flushed face, tears threatening to spill over as the weight of the moment bore down on me.
Behind me, I could feel him. I didn't need to turn around to know that Alpha Valen's eyes were locked on me, burning with an intensity that was impossible to ignore. His gaze was an invisible tether, pulling at me even as I fled.
But he didn't follow.
I could feel his presence lingering, a force so palpable it seemed to pull the entire courtyard into his orbit. The whispers grew louder, feeding the electric tension in the air.
Jessy's face flashed in my mind, her expression torn between disbelief and concern. Aiden's smirk, usually so confident, had faltered, his eyes narrowing as he tracked my retreat. And Lily-quiet, observant Lily-had clutched the fabric of her dress, her face pale and unreadable.
The festive atmosphere was gone. The joyous celebration had transformed into something heavy and suffocating, like a storm waiting to break.
I ran.
The cool evening air stung my cheeks, but I didn't stop. I couldn't stop. My mind raced as fast as my feet, each thought colliding with the next until they were a chaotic jumble.
Mate.
The word echoed again, louder and more disorienting with every step. This isn't happening. It can't be happening.
My legs burned with the effort, but I kept going, pushing through the winding paths of the school grounds. I needed space. I needed to breathe. The suffocating stares, the whispers, the weight of his declaration-I had to get away from all of it.
The farther I ran, the darker it became. The bright lights and celebratory banners faded into the distance, replaced by the quiet, shadowed paths that led to the edges of the school grounds. My breath came in sharp, uneven gasps, my chest tight with panic.
I didn't know where I was going until I found myself in the old garden behind the school. It was a forgotten place, overgrown with vines and shadowed by tall, gnarled trees. The faint scent of damp earth and wildflowers filled the air, and for a moment, the silence felt almost too loud.
I collapsed onto a weathered bench, my chest heaving as I fought to steady my breath. My hands trembled as I buried my face in them, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
Alpha Valen.
His name echoed in my mind, along with the image of his golden eyes. The eyes from my dreams-the ones that had haunted me for weeks-were his. A shiver ran down my spine as the realization settled over me.
Why me?
Why now?
I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms as I tried to think. This wasn't supposed to happen. Mates were something you dreamed about, something you read about in stories-not something that happened in the middle of a crowded courtyard with everyone watching.
And certainly not with him.
The weight of his gaze, the intensity in his voice-it was too much. It was like he had pulled the rug out from under me, leaving me spinning, unable to find my footing.
I tried to piece it together, to make sense of it all, but my thoughts were too tangled. I kept coming back to the same questions, the same confusion. Why now? Why me?
The garden was quiet, the kind of quiet that felt heavy, pressing against my ears. The soft rustle of leaves in the breeze was the only sound, a stark contrast to the chaos I had left behind.
I looked up at the sky, the faint glimmer of stars peeking through the canopy of trees. For a moment, I let myself focus on the stillness, on the cool air against my skin. But even that wasn't enough to drown out the storm inside me.
My heart ached with confusion, fear, and something I couldn't quite name. It wasn't anger, not exactly. And it wasn't sadness, either. It was something in between, something raw and unshaped.
I pressed my hands to my face, willing myself to calm down. To think. To breathe.
But the truth was, I didn't know how to move forward from this.
