                    Julia's pov
I barely registered the sound of footsteps approaching, too lost in the whirlwind of thoughts racing through my mind. But then, the air shifted. It was subtle at first-just a faint pressure in the atmosphere, a sense of someone drawing near. I froze, heart pounding. My pulse quickened, and I could feel it in the very marrow of my bones. He was here.
Alpha Valen.
The rustling of leaves, the soft snap of a twig beneath his feet, signaled his arrival. I didn't turn around. I couldn't. My chest felt tight, my breath shallow, as though the air had thickened with the weight of everything I had just fled from.
"Julia."
His voice was low, smooth like velvet, but it cut through the quiet of the garden with an intensity that made my skin tingle. The way he said my name-it wasn't just a sound. It was a promise, a pull, something that made my heart race in a way I couldn't explain.
I felt his presence behind me, standing just a few steps away. I didn't want to turn around. I didn't want to face him, not after everything that had just happened. But my body betrayed me, slowly, almost against my will, as I shifted slightly on the bench.
I caught a glimpse of him in my peripheral vision. Tall, commanding, his broad shoulders framed by the darkening sky. His eyes were focused on me, burning with an emotion I couldn't quite place. There was something in his gaze that made my breath hitch, something magnetic, something powerful. It felt like he was pulling me in, a force I couldn't escape. The clouds that covered the moon parted away slowly it's light radiating us. I felt the pull.,
"Why are you running?" His voice was gentle, yet it carried the weight of his presence.
I didn't answer right away. How could I? The truth was, I didn't know why I was running. I had to escape, yes, but escape from what? From him? From the overwhelming truth that he had just claimed me as his mate? I couldn't process it, couldn't make sense of it.
"I didn't ask for this," I whispered, barely audible. The words tasted bitter on my tongue. I didn't want to sound weak, but the words slipped out anyway, a rawness to them that surprised me.
Valen took a step closer, and my heart stuttered. He was close now, close enough that I could feel the heat radiating off his body, close enough to see the determination in his eyes.
"I know you didn't," he said softly, his voice carrying an unspoken understanding. "But I'm here now. And I'm not going anywhere, Julia."
I looked up at him, my heart aching in my chest. There was something in his eyes-something vulnerable, something that made me want to believe him. But I was too scared to trust it, too scared to let myself fall into the unknown.
"Why me?" I whispered, the question escaping before I could stop it. "Why now?"
Valen knelt down in front of me, his eyes never leaving mine. The intensity in his gaze made my breath catch, and I felt a strange warmth flood my chest, something I couldn't name.
"Because you're mine," he said simply, his voice steady and sure. "From the moment I laid eyes on you, I knew. And I'll never let you go."
I shook my head, the weight of his words pressing down on me. "I don't know how to do this," I admitted, my voice shaky. "I don't know how to be your mate."
He reached out, his hand gentle as it cupped my cheek, the touch sending a jolt of electricity through me. "You don't have to know everything right now," he murmured, his thumb brushing over my skin in slow, soothing circles. "All I need from you is trust. Trust that I'll be here, that I'll never leave you, no matter what."
My eyes fluttered closed at his touch, the warmth of his hand against my skin grounding me in a way nothing else could. His promise felt like a balm to the chaos swirling inside me, but it wasn't enough to quiet the fear, the uncertainty that still gripped me.
"I'm scared," I admitted, my voice barely a whisper.
Valen's hand slid from my cheek to the back of my neck, his touch both tender and possessive. "I know you are," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "But you don't have to be. I'll protect you. I'll always protect you, Julia. You're not alone in this. I'll never let you face this world alone."
His words, the raw sincerity in them, struck a chord deep within me. I wanted to believe him, wanted to trust him with everything I had, but I couldn't ignore the doubts swirling in my mind. I couldn't ignore the fear that still clung to me, the fear of what this connection meant, of what it would cost me.
But in that moment, as his hand rested on my neck, grounding me, I realized something. I didn't have to understand it all right now. I didn't have to have all the answers.
I just had to take one step forward.
I slowly opened my eyes, meeting his gaze. There was so much I wanted to say, but the words wouldn't come. Instead, I leaned into him, just slightly, the gesture more than enough to convey what I couldn't voice.
Valen's eyes softened, and a smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "You don't have to say anything," he murmured, his voice a low growl. "Just know that I'm here. And I'll never let you go."
He leaned in then, his lips brushing against my forehead in a kiss so soft, so tender, it sent a shiver through my entire body. For the first time in what felt like forever, I felt something shift within me, a quiet surrender to the bond we shared.
In that moment, with the cool night air surrounding us, I let myself believe in his promise. I let myself believe in him.
And for the first time, I didn't feel so lost.
"I'm not going anywhere either," I whispered back, my voice barely audible.
Valen's arms wrapped around me then, pulling me close, and I let myself rest against him, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath my ear. In that moment, everything else faded away. The chaos, the uncertainty, the whispers-they were all gone. It was just the two of us, and for the first time, I felt like maybe, just maybe, I could let myself be his mate.
And he could be mine.
