Ian's icy glare pierced through me, sending chills down my spine like I was being dragged into a frozen abyss.
How had I been so blind? Love—or the cruel absence of it—was always painfully obvious.
"Ian," I demanded, my voice trembling, "don't you have anything to say about Trish's condition?"
He didn't even look at me. "If you already know she's sick, then you should be more understanding. You two used to be best friends. Maybe I've spoiled you too much—that's why you've turned into such a spiteful woman."
A bitter laugh escaped me, but before I could retort, Trish let out a weak, dramatic cough.
"Ian… it hurts… I can't… breathe."
Even as her frail fingers clutched his arm, she still managed to shoot me a smug, victorious smirk.
Jaime immediately rushed forward, scooping her up like some fragile damsel. "I'm taking her to the hospital."
Then he paused, turning to Ian with a pointed glare. "This is Zara's fault. She needs to take responsibility. You need to take her to the hospital."
"I'm not going anywhere," I snapped. "Her condition has nothing to do with me."
I gripped the doorframe, refusing to budge. But Ian pried my fingers off with brutal force, his grip bruising my wrist. "If you hadn't pushed Trish, she wouldn't have collapsed. You're coming with me."
Ignoring the fact that I was eight months pregnant, he dragged me outside like a criminal.
At the hospital, Ian and Jaime hovered over Trish like devoted knights, anxiously awaiting her test results. Seizing the moment, I slipped away and headed straight to reception—not for a checkup, but for an abortion.
Without hesitation, I swallowed the pills the doctor prescribed.
Clutching the appointment slip, I turned to leave—only to freeze at the sound of a familiar voice echoing down the hallway.
"Trish can't wait any longer. We need to extract the umbilical cord blood from Zara's baby now."
Ian's brow furrowed, his expression unreadable.
"But Zara's only eight months along. Extracting the cord blood this early could endanger the baby."
Jaime scoffed. "Don't tell me you've actually developed feelings for her. Have you forgotten whose child she's carrying—or why you married her in the first place?"
Ian shot him a murderous glare. "Like hell I'd fall for that miserable, pregnant cow. I only love Trish. I just don't want this turning into a disaster."
"The baby's fully developed at eight months—it'll survive," Jaime said coldly. "And even if something happens, isn't it an honor for the child to save Trish?"
Ian's jaw tightened. "You're right. I'll perform the procedure myself. I'll extract the cord blood and give it to Trish."
Terror seized me. My entire body shook as I bolted for the exit. I was almost to the parking garage when two towering figures cut me off.
"Where do you think you're going?" Ian's voice was eerily calm. "The doctor just told me there's an issue with your test results. We need to run more tests. Come back with me."
He reached for my hand, but I jerked away.
"My last checkup was fine a week ago. And now, suddenly, there's a problem? Do you really think I'm that stupid?"
Ian's expression darkened. "I'm the head of obstetrics. If I say there's a problem, then there is one. Now come with me."
