The ice rink is quiet, save for the sharp scrape of skates cutting through the frozen surface and the rhythmic thud of pucks slamming into the boards. Nate Griffith doesn't hear it anymore. The sound of the game, the cheers of the crowd, none of it reaches him. His mind is elsewhere, caught in the same dark place it always goes after the rush of a game. The brutal hits, the blood, the victory, none of it matters. Not really.
His teammates don't understand it. They never will. They see the ice as a place to let go, to escape. For Nate, it's a prison, it's a place where he buries everything he can't control. The anger. The darkness. The memories that claw at him when he's alone.
But one night... one night, everything changes.
He's out with them, at a strip club of all places, the last place he thought he'd find anything meaningful. But then he locks eyes with her. Billie Carter, a dancer with a fire in her that mirrors the storm inside him, he feels something shift. He's been numb for so long, it's almost a relief to feel something, even if it's this dangerous pull toward her.
He doesn't know who she is, and she doesn't know him. But that's the thing about Nate—he doesn't need to know her to want her.
And that's the beginning. The moment it all starts, even if neither of them is ready to admit it yet.
