The room was loud. Annoyingly loud.
Whispers slithered between desks, hushed voices pretending to be subtle but failing miserably.
It had been going on since yesterday. The same murmurs. The same rumors.
And now, I was done with it.
I set my books down a little too hard on my desk, making a few people flinch. Then, I exhaled and leaned forward.
"If you all have so much energy to gossip," I said, voice smooth but sharp, "then maybe a pop quiz would be a good way to start the morning?"
Silence.
The shift in the place was immediate. Eyes widened. Some people straightened up, others paled.
I leaned back in my chair, tapping my fingers lazily on the desk. "What do you think? You all seem very talkative today. Maybe you're confident?"
A few exchanged glances. Some tried to act busy, looking down at their notes.
I almost smirked.
Then, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed movement outside the door.
I turned my head.
She was there.
Eunhye.
Standing in the hallway, not moving, her expression unreadable.
But I knew she could hear them.
All of them.
Without thinking, I stood up and walked toward her.
The whispers were still there—fainter now, but still there.
I ignored them.
When I reached her, I didn’t say anything. I just took her wrist, not too tightly, and pulled her along.
Back into our seats.
The silence that followed was satisfying.
I let go of her wrist as soon as we sat down, glancing at her.
"I'll actually tell the teachers about the pop quiz," I muttered, just loud enough for her to hear. "You know, just to make it fair."
EUNHYE
The air in the hallway was heavy. Not with anything tangible, but with something worse—whispers.
They clung to my skin, weaving through the space between me and the rest of the world. The weight of their words, their glances, their silence when I got too close.
I should've been used to it by now.
But I wasn't.
Then, suddenly—warmth.
A hand, firm yet careful, wrapping around my wrist.
Jaehyun.
He didn't speak, didn't hesitate—just pulled me inside, his presence loud enough to drown out everything else.
The room quieted when we entered, the murmurs dying instantly. But Jaehyun didn’t even glance at them.
He let go of my wrist when we reached our seats, leaning back into his chair with an easy confidence that only he could manage.
"I'll actually tell the teachers about the pop quiz," he muttered. "You know, just to make it fair."
For some reason, that made me smile. Just a small one. Barely there. But when I turned my head, I caught him looking.
And for a moment—just a moment—everything else faded.
His eyes softened. A slow, knowing smile curved on his lips.
Then—
A hand ruffled my hair, brief but warm, like the gentlest of breezes.
I blinked up at him. "What was that for?"
He leaned his cheek against his palm. "You smiled."
"So?"
"So," he said, tilting his head slightly, "it looked nice." I stared at him, not knowing how to respond to that.
