As dusk settled over SlimFit Retreat, the staff lit a bonfire on the lawn and laid out a buffet. The spread looked vibrant—colorful plates arranged like a rainbow—but one bite confirmed these were still diet meals: high-protein, low-fat, and just... fine.
By the time dinner wrapped up, the group was buzzed—not just from the mocktails, but the energy. Ryan Evans snatched the microphone with a grin. "Alright, listen up! We're playing hide-and-seek with a twist."
He gestured to a box of playing cards in the center of the lawn. "Ladies draw a card first. Guys, your job is to find the girl holding your match. Got it?"
The crowd erupted.
"This is gonna be epic!"
"Ryan, you genius!"
"Come on, girls, pick fast—I need a partner!"
The women lined up to choose their cards. I started to join them, but Sophia Laurent caught my wrist with a sly wink. "Relax," she whispered, pressing a card into my palm. "I already grabbed yours. Don't thank me yet."
I blinked. "Wait, how does this even—?"
"Ethan'll explain," she said, nudging me toward the shadows. "Go hide."
Still clueless, I ducked behind a cluster of bushes. Nearby, a girl clutched the Ace of Spades like a winning lottery ticket, waving it at every guy who passed.
"Uh… isn't this supposed to be hide-and-seek?" I muttered.
Before I could ask, a heavyset guy jogged over, flashing his matching ace. The girl squealed. "Xiao Jiang! You're my match?" She yanked him into the trees, and—whoa. Within seconds, they were glued together, his hands roaming under her shirt.
My jaw dropped. "What is happening—?"
A voice cut through the dark. "Nana?" Ethan stepped into view, holding up his card. "You've got the Two of Hearts, right?" His smile was all teeth, his gaze way too intense.
Seriously? Even in the dim firelight, he was laying it on thick.
I backed up—and tripped over a root, landing hard on the grass.
"Whoa, easy!" Ethan lunged, but momentum sent him crashing down on top of me. His face hovered inches from mine, breath warm against my cheek.
Oh hell no. I did not sign up for bad rom-com tropes.
"Get. Off." I shoved at his chest.
He rolled aside, but as I scrambled up, his hands locked around my waist, yanking me back.
I gasped. "Ethan—let go!"
His grip tightened. "Not until you hear me out."
