Vincent Lombardi tried to chase after us, but Noah Luwelton grabbed his arm, holding him back.
Impatient, Vincent lashed out—brutal, merciless. Noah cried out in pain before collapsing to the floor.
Sophia Valentine stood frozen, her limbs heavy, her breath shallow. Fear had locked her in place.
I pulled her forward, guiding her through the dim, twisting basement, but every turn led to another dead end.
Just as hope flickered—just as we thought we might escape—Liam Deross stepped into our path.
He blocked the way. My legs gave out. I dropped to my knees, pleading.
For a second, Liam hesitated. Then, as if remembering his wife and child, his expression hardened. He reached for us.
Vincent's footsteps pounded closer. A desperate idea sparked in my mind.
I told Liam the truth.
Vincent had killed his wife. The hospital money? Gambled away.
Liam's grip faltered. Doubt flickered in his eyes. Then Vincent burst in.
"Stop them!" Vincent snarled.
Liam turned on him. "Is it true?"
Vincent's silence was answer enough.
I pressed harder. "Noah's already dead because of him. Go look in the back room."
Liam shoved forward, but Vincent—panicked, guilty—blocked him.
The hesitation in Liam's eyes vanished. Vincent saw it.
He lunged.
"Look out!" I yelled.
Liam dodged—but not fast enough. The blow still landed.
The two men crashed into each other, fists flying. It bought us time.
I seized Sophia's wrist and ran.
Behind us, Liam fought—but Vincent was stronger. Within seconds, it was over.
Vincent was coming again. Faster now.
We reached the basement door. I threw it open—
And stared down the barrel of a gun.
A shot cracked through the air. Vincent dropped behind us.
The police had arrived.
Our school had reported us missing. They'd tracked us here.
Sophia and I were safe.
Relief crashed over us like a wave.
But nothing would ever be the same.
Fear clung to us like a shadow. We stopped going out alone.
At school, whispers followed us. Stares burned into our backs.
One thing was certain—we couldn't hide.
We had to face this. Rebuild. Survive.
