I looked at the space where I had slept, cried, laughed, and felt many emotions in the past month for the last time. My kids and Hazel were already outside, and I was holding our last bag, ready to join them.
I sighed as I began to walk toward the door but I stopped when I heard the sound of a cell phone ringing. My brows furrowed because the sound wasn’t coming from my handbag where my cellphone was safely tucked away and switched off as I didn’t want to hear from Tristan who must have been notified of our departure by Lucas’s men.
There was no way anyone from Crescent would travel to Black Fur without informing Tristan.
Out of curiosity, I traced the ringing sound to the bedside drawer on Hazel’s side of the bed, and lo and behold, I found a phone. I didn’t know how that was possible and how I had never noticed it until now.
As I tried to read the unknown number, I perceived Hazel’s scent before I heard footsteps. Within a second, Hazel opened the door and entered the room. Our eyes met and for a second I thought I heard her gasp.
I thought her eyes widened in a way that said, “Oh, you caught me.”
But those thoughts dissipated when Hazel asked, curiosity twinkling in her eyes, “Why aren’t you answering that?”
“Hmm…” I cleared my throat before responding, “Oh, this isn’t mine. I just found it ringing in the drawer. You must have seen it before. It’s on your side of the bed-”
“Yes. Yes. That has to be Jessica’s cell phone. She had one before she-” Hazel butted in but her voice soon broke. Neither of us has gotten over Jessica’s demise and I know we might never get used to it.
I nodded, “I should probably switch it off. We can’t announce her demiss to her loved ones over the phone.”
Whether Alpha Tristan has announced the news to the pack or not, I’d find out when I get home. Hopefully, I wouldn’t have to face Jessica’s parents and friends but even if I had to, that was the least I could do for her.
“Yeah, of course,” Hazel answered almost breathless.
“Are you okay? Why did you come back? I told you I’d get the last bag.” I raised my brows as I asked, turning off Jessica’s cell phone and throwing it in my handbag without noticing how Hazel’s gaze followed my every movement.
Hazel replied, “I’m good. I came to check the room one last time. We wouldn’t want to forget anything.”
“You have checked a million times, Hazel. We didn’t forget anything.” I chuckled, walking out of the room with Hazel who closed the door behind us.
“There’s no harm in checking.” Hazel shrugged and her eyes fell on the bag I was carrying. She uttered, “Let me help you with one of the bags. Your handbag preferably.”
I assumed Hazel wanted to carry my handbag because it was less heavy than the bigger bag, and that made me laugh. “Don’t worry about it. I can handle two bags without breaking a sweat.”
Besides, Iris’s journal was inside the bag and I couldn’t let Hazel see it.
Hazel smiled but that smile didn’t reach her eyes which was odd but I swallowed the urge to ask if she was really okay as we apparached the entrance door, Hazel opened the door and I stepped out.
Instantly, Katie called out, “Hurry up, mom. We’ve to go.”
I didn’t understand the urgency in her voice until I saw Lucas on the other side of the car, trying to speak to the twins. Kyle was sitting closer to the door and Lucas was standing beside the door, but his head was hanging over the window.
“Patient, young lady,” I replied, and feeling sorry for Lucas, I added, “Whereas we can’t leave until you say your goodbyes properly.”
Katie groaned loudly while I dumped the bag in the trunk. I rolled my eyes. “Do the needful, guys. Your grandma is also on her way to get some love. Don’t deprive her.”
I had sighted Iris before I made the kids alight from the car. Both of them hugged Iris and she showered them with kisses before they let Lucas hold them for nothing more than two seconds. In fact, I had to force them.
Maybe I shouldn’t have broken their bond.
“Serves him right.” Shockingly, Inara who didn’t seem to be on my side when I told the kids about the past, grumbled. Although it suddenly didn’t feel right, I was glad I chose this path. At least my kids were willingly going home with me. Katie and Kyle returned to the car after saying their goodbyes and Iris hugged me tightly before she said, “Don’t forget to keep in touch.”
“I won’t and you can always visit the twins or have them come here for a visit.” For Iris, I’d allow that.
“Good to know.” Iris smiled, patted my back, and left me with Lucas.
I broke the thick ice between us when he refused to meet my gaze or utter a word. “You can also visit, call, or have the kids come over as soon as Lorraine is no longer a threat. I won’t keep them away from you.”
Lucas nodded, keeping his distance. “I appreciate that.” He etched but he didn’t make a move to ask for my number. Well, I tried.
I took my gaze off him and joined the kids in the car. To be honest, I expected something more than what Lucas was letting on. Would it be crazy if I admitted that I thought he would publicly apologize and beg me to stay even though I wouldn’t change my mind?
Well, a woman can dream… some dreams just don’t come true.
Although there were three cars, I asked Hazel to join the kids and me. Our car was in the middle while the car in front had Jessica’s embalmed body. The car behind was full of Lucas’s men… for security purposes, or so I thought.
However, Jake who was also traveling with us asked Hazel to travel with Jessica’s body. I didn’t understand why but because I didn’t want Jessica to be alone in the car with the driver, I didn’t question Jake, and neither did I think too much about the fact that Andrew didn’t show up to see us off.
He and the kids made a connection these past few weeks.
But what do I know?
I didn’t even know that I was sitting in a death trap with my kids until it was too late.
