Fiona
I felt it…
The second Lucas accepted my long-standing rejection, I felt it in my bones. Mostly, I felt relieved that it was finally over with him but still, a tiny part of me grieved what could have been… what the both of us could have been, what our life would have been like with our kids if we didn’t start on the wrong track.
I found myself thinking about the unknown future that stood before us all and I felt fear sinking into my bones as I wondered if I’d ever be happy.
But that wasn’t all I felt.
I felt suspicious as well.
It’s been almost an hour since we left Lucas’s territory and even though we still had a long journey before us, something seemed off. Not only was the car in front speeding off like it wanted to get to Black Fur before the rest.
Could Hazel be so excited that she told the driver to go faster than usual? I wouldn’t put it past her but I wished I could tell her to think about safety first.
Aside from that, the driver of our car seemed to be struggling with the wheel and he was sweating profusely. Or could I be imagining that just because he was way behind Hazel’s car? But he was also somehow ahead of the car behind us.
Was my mind making things up?
“No, Relia.” Inara chimed. “Something is off. I can feel it in my gut.”
“Are you sure what you feel has nothing to do with the severed bond?” I muttered to my wolf, considering every factor.
Although my wolf has been more interested in Tristan these past few months, a destined mate bond was still no joke. However, Inara countered with a snarl, “This has nothing to do with that. He should have accepted the rejection ages ago and why should I worry when we will be creating a healthy bond with Alpha Tristan in a few days? Our future is bright, Fiona. To hell with the dark past.”
I ignored Inara’s nonchalant attitude, wishing that I could tap into my spiritual energy right now so I can figure out why I wasn’t at ease but there has been a block since I used it to find Lorraine’s lair and free her captives. Or maybe my inability to use my spiritual senses is why I was feeling uncomfortable at the moment.
“I don’t think so, Relia. Yes, there’s a block but our instincts are still as accurate as ever.” Inara stated, also worried.
My wolf’s words urged me to ask the driver, “Is the car faulty or are you experiencing some discomfort?”
Kyle and Katie were in their own world while the driver looked at me through the rear mirror and answered with a forced smile, “No, Lady Fiona. The car is fine and I’m okay. I think I might need to stop for a minute though.”
“Why do we have to stop if there’s no problem?” I was becoming really worried.
He whispered, “I have to go…”
I didn’t understand him as his eyes shifted back to the road but his words got Katie’s attention and she uttered, “I want to go too, Mom.”
“Me too, Mama. My bladder is about to explode.” Kyle expatiated, making me realize that the driver meant he needed to pee.
The car came to a stop in the middle of an unfamiliar area and very close to the edge of the road which was sitting above a hill. I could see a rocky downhill from where I was standing and I made sure I kept my eyes on the kids because not only was the area unsafe for anyone, but I also wouldn’t want to see either of them rolling downhill.
While the kids and the driver relieved their bladders on different sides of the road, I noticed that I could no longer see Hazel’s car but the third car was slowly closing in which meant we weren’t alone. That was a relief.
“Hurry up, Katie. This isn’t a safe place.” I said to my daughter as I helped my son zip us his shorts.
The driver finished with his business and went back to take his place behind the wheel. I was about to let Kyle enter the car when I saw the third car picking up speed. My brows furrowed and my eyes squinted when Inara called my attention to the fact that there were just two people inside the third car.
“Even Jake isn’t in there,” Inara said to me, her curiosity building up. “What the hell is happening?”
“Something isn’t right.” I voiced, taking my eyes off the car to get Katie closer to me.
I expected the car to slow down and stop beside ours for obvious reasons but it simply picked up speed, coming straight for our parked car. My eyes widened but I was quick to lift both Kyle and Katie into my arms.
“Get out of there…” I screamed to the oblivious man who was behind the wheel of the car looking like he was about to puke. However, the driver I was trying to save from what I presumed was about to be a fatal accident didn’t get my message until the other car got even closer. The driver scurried, trying to get out of the car from the other side but he was too late. And all I could do was hide my kid’s face from the scene, a scream ripping past my lips.
