ALPHA RAIDEN
I stared at the cell phone for the longest time, shaking visibly yet doing my best to contain the rage rushing through my veins, poisoning my mind and contaminating my broken soul yet keeping me alive.
That rage was the only thing that had kept me breathing for the past few days and letting it out on Jake who I had tied to a pole in the pack square, was one way to keep myself sane.
Mostly, I was mad at Lorraine and Jake.
However, I was mad at myself as well.
Do I always have to be a failure?
Why can’t I do one thing right?
I had commanded my men to stretch out and search the area where the accident happened. I had been searching with them but there was no sign of Fiona and the kids.
We found no sign of life, except for a few of their belongings scattered around the explosion spot.
This brings me to the struggle that I have been dealing with… The struggle of accepting that they were gone-
“They can’t be gone.” Lex countered with a ferocious whimper.
He somehow managed to be sad and angry without losing his senses.
“How do you explain not finding them then?” I asked, my heart craving soothing words even though nothing could make me feel better.
Lex let out another whimper, “They are there somewhere. We just have to find them, Lucas. This isn’t the time to give up and just accept what fate shoves in our way. We can’t give up on them.”
I wasn’t planning to give up. I knew I wouldn’t stop searching until they were found… even if it was their bodies. As sad as that was, it would at least give me closure. The driver’s body was found… some part of it. The rest were burnt beyond recognition. It’s a relief to know that Fiona and the kids weren’t in the car when it exploded. We didn’t find their DNAs in the ashes we took to the pack’s lab. My Mom oversaw the process and she confirmed that Fiona and the kids weren’t in the car.
“I hope we find them today,” I said to my wolf, dropping the phone I took from Jake after he was arrested… the same phone Lorraine just called.
Lex seethed as the thought of Lorraine and the conversation I just had with her crossed my mind again, “That bitch!” She was more than that.
She was a witch.
A killer.
“I don’t want the thought of her to hinder the search today, Lex. Please help me stay sane.” I pleaded with my wolf, ready to step out of my home which had now become a quiet place.
It was no longer a home and the place haunted me.
As much as I tried to deprive Lorraine from taking over my mind, I couldn’t help but wonder where she was at the moment. I have been torturing Jake every day… every morning and each time I return from the search without my family. Jake had seen death but he couldn’t embrace it.
I made sure of that but he still refused to give up Lorraine’s location. Such loyalty to a traitor and betrayal to his Alpha! Tsk Tsk…
“Today is another day to make him talk,” Lex said to me as I closed the entrance door behind me but we both knew I wasn’t concerned about Lorraine and Jake at the moment.
Finding Lorraine was still on the list but finding my family alive was more important to me…
“We’ll find the alive,” Lex assured me. “Now that Lorraine has been made to believe that they are dead, I’m sure she will back off a bit and that will give us all the time we need to get them back.”
Lex couldn’t believe himself either. He was giving me false hope but I took it without complaining. False or not, I did ask my wolf to keep me sane for the day.
I almost ran into my Mom as I began to walk mindlessly but her voice made me snap out of my daze. “Off to join the search again, I presume?”My Mom asked me.
I batted my eyes and finally saw her standing right in front of me with Andrew beside her. Guilt echoed in my heart as my gaze settled on Andrew. He was healing greatly but that didn’t make me feel any better.
If Jake betrayed me, I betrayed Andrew.
“Yes, mom.” I finally found the energy to answer my mom’s question.
To my surprise, Andrew chimed, “I’m coming with you today, Alpha.”
Instantly, I blurted, “No, you aren’t. You are resting-”
“I have rested enough, Alpha. You need me out there and I won’t leave you alone when you need me the most.” Andrew countered, putting his foot down. 1
My lips parted but I closed them without uttering a word. It was hard to believe that he was still willing to rock with me through the storm even after I nearly sent him to an early grave because of my stupidity.
“Drew-” I muttered, fighting back tears.
Andrew stepped closer to me, his hand on my shoulder, I know you are sorry, Lucas and mistakes are bound to happen. What matters most is that you are sorry and you found out I’m innocent. We just need to find them before it’s too late. They are waiting out there… Waiting for us to rescue them.”
“With you two back together, they won’t have to wait any longer.” My mom breathed, blinking back tears.
Even she knew that the chances of finding Fiona and the kids alive were low not after we had searched for two days but like everyone else, she refused to accept that reality. I mean, Fiona won’t just sit in a place and wait for the rescue team. She was no damsel in distress.
I smiled sadly, “Are you sure he is strong enough to go with us today?” I asked my Mom for her healer perspective.
She nodded, “He’s fine but still watch him closely and have each other’s back from now on. No more crazy fist fights.”
My mom tried to crack a joke but it came out flat. She went on about her day while Andrew and I led the search for that day. However, we returned home without Fiona and the kids again. Instead, we came back with a half-burnt journal that brought my mom to tears.
And of course, I poured my anger out on Jake for the rest of the night and eventually, I left my pack in the hands of my Beta and my Mom, telling them, “I will search the wild alone henceforth. I won’t return home without them. Dead or Alive.”Andrew tried to stop me from going. He believed the pack needed me with Tristan’s looming war but I muttered before leaving, “My family needs me more. The pack has you but they have no one.” They understood me but we all knew what was at risk.
“And oh, Jake can’t be peaceful just because I’m gone, Andrew. Take him to hell but don’t leave him there to die.” That was my last command to Andrew, the only man I now knew I could trust my existence.
