My first conscious action was inhaling deeply, which irritated my lungs and I started coughing. The dryness of my throat sparked curiosity and I found myself pushing my eyelids apart. However, the sudden brightness that attacked my eyes forced my lids to go against the command from my brain.
I felt like I had been hit by a truck and-
The car!
I gasped, realizing that I was indeed hit by, in this case, a car.
My kids…
The thought of my kids flooded my mind and blood pumped rapidly within me, causing my heart to pound despite the pain in my chest.
Again, I tried to open my eyes. I needed to see what had happened. Did I black out? How long have I been unconscious?
I asked myself questions as my eyes fluttered open, slowly to get accustomed to the brightness around me. My brain
immediately registers the state of the roof as I fixate on it. The roof was made with dry palm fronds which allowed sunlight to hit my face.
I was in a hut.
On a bed.
And alone.
I couldn’t see Katie and Kyle anywhere in the small plain hut and neither could I perceive them around me.
“Katie.” I cried out but my voice came out husky with a notable itch in my throat. Yet I cried again, “Kyle”
If anyone could hear me, no one responded.
I pushed against the weakness in my bones, forcing myself off the hard surface I had been lying on. My muscles protested against the movement but I needed to find my kids. Slowly, I walked toward the entrance of the hut which was covered with dry palm fronds as well.
“Katie! Kyle!” I called out again, this time a little louder as I stepped into the brightness of the day.
Stepping into the open space, I realized the unfamiliar area had other huts similar to the one I just exited. What is this place? I asked myself as I checked every hut, calling out my kids’ names. I was becoming frustrated and scared.
What could have happened after the explosion? I knew that much and I thought I died but Inara told me she could save us-
“Ina?” I checked within myself to call on my wolf.
But I met silence and a void.
It was as if she was gone as well.
Could I be dreaming? Or hallucinating?
The huts were too many for my weak self to check alone so I tried to use my senses, hoping that I’d be able to perceive my kids or anyone but again, my senses failed. My nostrils took in nothing but air and I heard nothing but the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves.
This was driving me crazy and as I looked around, trying to figure out the kind of mess I was in, my head began to ache. I dawdled along the path between the huts on both sides, hoping I would run into someone, get answers… and see my kids.
I have to see them.
“Inara, please say something to me,” I begged my wolf who was still very quiet.
I feared I had lost her. I feared I had lost all of them.
My kids, my wolf, my friends… everyone was gone.
The weight of loneliness and loss smashed into me and my legs wobbled yet I cried as loud as my lungs allowed me, “Kyle! Katie! Where are you!”
Tears trickled down my cheeks and I finally gave in to the weakness eating at my legs. I fell on the hard floor, questions and fear in my mind.
As if I was drugged, my sights blurred but before they could close I saw a large number of people approaching the huts… their feet hurried when they saw me and I tried to have a good look at their faces but I failed.
However, I didn’t fail to hear the two voices that instantly healed my soul. “Mom.” Katie etched while Kyle exclaimed, ” Mama, you are awake!”My heart swelled with joy but I wasn’t really awake. My eyes were barely open as I pulled my kids to my chest, all three of us on the floor. “I’m glad you are okay. I thought I lost you-” I whimpered into their ears.
“You protected us, Mama. You are the best.” Kyle muttered to me, kissing my cheek despite the dirt on it.
I didn’t know what he was talking about and as much as I wanted to get answers, I simply hugged them tightly, relieved.
“We should get you to the purification hut.” An unfamiliar voice echoed in my ears. I still couldn’t make out her features even though her face was directly above me as she stared down at me. “The water will help you get back to full health.”
“Who are you?” I asked.
Although it seemed like the kids and I had been here after the explosion, I still wondered if I could trust her or the others. There were other people around us but she was the one who stepped forward.
Before the strange lady could answer, Katie provided an answer, “She’s Mia Lu. She makes the best soups, Mom.”
Mia Lu?
I have never heard of her before now. She could have done something to my wolf- I have to get out of here. “Thank you for your help but we can manage just fine. We just need to contact Black Fur Pack. It’s where we should be.” I said to Mia Lu.
Who knew, she could be one of Lorraine’s people. She could be holding us captive for Lorraine.
“Trust me, even if you are strong enough to make it to Black Fur Pack, you wouldn’t want to go there.” Her voice was warm yet her words felt cold. She uttered, speaking to the other people around us, “Get her to the purifying lake before she blacks out again.”
While hands grabbed me gently, tearing me away from my kids, Mia Lu’s murmurs caught my attention, “She’s one of ours and we take care of our own.”
What does that even mean…
