I was living my best life in the hut assigned to my kids and me in the hidden pack while the rest of the realm assumed we were dead. Unfortunately, my best life came with constant anger and sadness at times.
I was sad because I realized that no one was looking for us. No one cared enough to try to find us. It’s been two weeks since we got here according to Mia Lu-
“Even if anyone is looking for us, we can’t be found. The pack is hidden from other wolves and we would have had trouble finding it if we weren’t brought in by the trackers that sensed our spiritual energy when we tried to create the shield.” Inara explained again.
I groaned, “Not like I care but it would be nice to know someone out there is looking for us still.”
My wolf hummed in agreement while my eyes scanned the area. The huts were built in rows, leaving a big enough bath between each row. Some huts were big while others were smaller, depending on the number of people that make up the family it belongs to.
It was surprising to find out that the entire area was protected with Mia Lu’s life force. As long as she is safe, the pack’s location will also be. To be honest, I have learned a lot during my stay here.
For instance, the white wolves who have the ability to track are the same ones that leave the pack often to search for food, hunt, and also bring information back to others. These trackers have a unique ability of cloaking themselves which means when they are out, no one can see them or sense them.
That was mindblowing.
But sadly, there are only a few trackers left in the pack.
There are many fractions even though the pack was small in number compared to other packs I have visited. However, I still didn’t know where I actually belong. I still haven’t discovered what my unique ability was-
To my surprise, Mia Lu’s voice echoed in my mind as she sat beside me, “I told you not to worry about that, child.”
Yes, I could communicate through the pack’s mental link. It felt surreal to hear other people’s voices in my head but nothing could have made me happier. I finally found a place for me… people for me.
I took my eyes off the group of children that I had been watching, sitting in front of my hut, and looked at Mia Lu. “I still need to learn how to stop you from hearing my thoughts.” I chuckled.
“How can you? You think too loud.” Mia Lu responded with a smile of her own, patting my back affectionately.
It has been like that here. Everyone showed affection. There was no hate and I had no reason to watch my back constantly- they watched it for me. I could train freely and learn from the source rather than use Iris’s journal like I once planned to do.
Heaven knows I failed to protect the journal from the explosion.
“Who is this Iris? I have heard you think about her and a few other people in the past few days. What journal did you lose? Perhaps one of the trackers can find it and bring it back.” Mia Lu said to me through the mind link, her eyes on the kids.
I didn’t know how to answer that question because I knew no matter what I chose to say, it’d lead me back to Lucas and I didn’t want to talk nor think about him. Yet I muttered, “Don’t stress over the journal. I’m sure it has turned to ashes. About Iris, she’s my destined mate’s mother. Her mother was a white wolf and her dad was from the Crescent Pack-”
“Oh, I know her! The half-breed girl.” Mia Lu exclaimed, familiarity glinting in her eyes. “She was a darling.” “You know her?” I asked, shocked.
Mia Lu nodded, “Well, I used to. Just like you, she had questions about our people. Inquisive little thing.”
“You speak of her like she is a little girl, Mia Lu. That’s my kids’ grandmother.” I laughed, wondering about the kind of relationship they must have had.
“She used to be just a little girl and after she became Luna of Crescent Pack, she helped to stop the great war.” Mia Lu started with a smile but mentioning the war stole the brightness on her face. “It’s why we chose a land close to Crescent Pack to settle and grow.”
I muttered sadly, “She told me all about the war and she also mentioned that some of the elite family escaped but were never found.”
“The Alpha family trusted me with the responsibility of making sure no one finds us. They gave their lives for our survival.” Mia Lu said to me.
Knowing that I needed to know more about my parents now that I have found family, I asked, “Can you tell me about the elite families?” Iris suggested that my mom could be one of them.
“Of course, child.” Mia Lu held my gaze. “There used to be eight elite families. The Alpha family is one of them and together these eight families ensure the growth of the pack.”
If it turns out that my family is not one of these eight, I could only hope that Mia Lu would still be able to lead me to my
source.
“The Alpha family goes with the name King. The Beta family was the Dunns. Susanna is from the Gamma family and she carries the name Rios. I’m from a family of spiritual leaders and we were the Lu which means light of the pack.” Mia Lu went on to tell me that the people who healed me and destroyed the limitation Tristan put on me in the purifying Lake were the current leaders of each elite family.
“However two families have gone extinct.” Mia Lu muttered sadly. “The King and the Seers. Members of the King family were not only stronger but they could learn the ability of every other family despite having their own family strength. They were our extraordinary leaders while the Seers got a clear glimpse into the future. When Black Fur started planning their attack, they crippled the Seers first, blinding us all.” (1
I didn’t know when I blurted, “I get visions too. Does that mean I’m one of the Seers?”
Mia Lu voiced, “I suspected. In fact, we all suspected because the last Seer who was supposed to come into hiding with us, decided to stall Black Fur Warriors for us even though she was pregnant. She promised to find us but she never did=”
Could she be my mom? The same woman that died in Dakota’s arms after birthing me?
