I’d be a fool to not have noticed how the few people in this pack stare at me when they think I’m not watching. They stared at me with something close to awe in their eyes and before Mia Lu revealed some facts to me, I thought they were just trying to wrap their heads around how I survived among enemies all my life.
I thought they were looking at me because my kids and I were different. My hair was still black as the dye hadn’t washed out and my kids still had their dirty blond hair, unlike other kids with white hair.
But I began to doubt that after Mia Lu said to me, “She did that because she blamed herself for not seeing the evil the Black Fur members brought with them when she welcomed them into the pack with open hands and she believed protecting the last of us was her duty as-”
“But she was pregnant. She should have considered the life of her child.” I lamented.
“I told her the same but she said it’s her child’s responsibility to protect the survivors. Not just hers.” Mia Lu informed me.
I scoffed. The thought of being that child made me react rashly to Mia Lu’s words, “How is that possible? An unborn child?” “That unborn child was the child of the last Alpha, Alpha Kennedy King, and that Seer was our last Luna, Luna Elora Seer King.” Mia Lu broke the news to me sadly. “Elora was my goddaughter, Fiona and it killed me to leave her there after I witnessed the death of her mother who wasn’t just my best friend but also my twin sister.”
The pain in Mia Lu’s caused my healing heart to ache. Ever since I regained consciousness, Mia Lu and a few others have been healing my sick heart and I have never felt more powerful. Power surged within me with every day that passed.
However, hearing these sad tales caused me more pain than anyone could imagine. What if those were my parents? What if-
I suddenly realized that I didn’t understand Mia Lu’s statement. I inquired, “The late Luna’s mother was your twin sister but you are Lu, not a Seer. I don’t understand.”
Before Mia Lu could respond, Susanna’s voice echoed in my ears as she claimed the empty seat beside me, “We have a unique dynamic in White Shade Pack. Although the Elder Tamia and the late Elder Elena were twins born of the same Seer mother, they had a Lu father. The twins had different last names because they had different personal abilities. Families were created by blood ties and also by ability”
“I was a spiritual guide like my father while Elena was a Seer like our mom. Elora was my niece… she was my daughter and I had to watch her die because I had the duty of protecting, leading, and providing for the survivors as the last standing spiritual guide,” For the first time in two weeks, I saw someone cry in this beautiful pack. Mia Lu cried as those words slipped past her lips.
Scooting closer to Mia Lu, I put my arm around her and hugged her. I yearn to ask her if there was any chance that I was Elora’s daughter… Elena’s granddaughter… and If Tamia, known as Mia Lu was my grand aunt. My family.
I yearned to ask her but I also felt like I had done enough harm. I opened up her wounds and it wouldn’t be considerate of me if I rubbed salt on that open wound.
Susanna patted my back, “I know you want to know your parents but most of us here were young when the great war happened while some of us were born after. We don’t even know much about the people we lost. Elder Tamia is the only one who was old enough to memorize each names and faces of those we lost.”
So she is the only one who can point me in the direction of my parents…
“You aren’t Elora’s child. They both died.” Mia Lu chimed, wiping her face. “Your mother must be one of the Seers as well but since she probably escaped alone, I don’t know which one she is. I think you should just focus on healing, training, and recognizing your ability.”
I wanted to argue. I mean, Mia Lu sounded dismissive and I could have sworn she was saying that because she didn’t want to face the past anymore. I had to resemble someone she knew in White Shade Pack–
“We’ve heard enough for today, Relia. We can’t be selfish. The people depend on the stability of Mia Lu’s life and I don’t think dragging her through the past will help.” Inara murmured sadly as we hit another dead end.
Perhaps it’s for the better.
Perhaps all I needed to do now was master the art of being a white wolf and live happily in the hidden Pack-
“Elder Mia Lu! Over here!” One of the trackers that I had become quite familiar with, Ross, called out from somewhere within the small area. “We found an unconscious wolf and I think it was bitten by a poisonous snake.”
“Tell me you didn’t bring the wolf, whoever it might be, into the pack.” Mia Lu yelled right back, jumping to her feet as she hurried towards the voice and we followed her.
Ross responded as we got closer, “It is still outside the shield. I just thought I should inform you.”
Mia Lu asked to take a look at the wolf they found, standing close to the shield as she said, “Snake poison can’t be the only reason a werewolf is unconscious.”
I saw the unconscious wolf lying on the floor as I stepped closer to the shield as well. Recognition flashed through me as I uttered, “That’s Lucas’s wolf.”
“Lucas? As in the Alpha Of Crescent Pack?” Ross asked with disbelief, staring at the weakness Lucas had become. Mia Lu breathed, “Lucas as in her ex-mate.”
While the pack contemplated whether they should bring Lucas in or not, I found myself smiling happily… It seems someone was looking for the kids and me after all.
