Fiona
The six elders of the hidden Pack; Mia Lu, Jeremy Dunns of the Beta family, Susanna Rios of the Gamma Family, Ross Hart of the Tracker family, Lori Hale of the Mender family, and Otis Bay of the Elemental family; allowed Lucas to be brought into the hidden pack.
Although Jeremy, a headstrong man in his forties, and Otis whose personal ability has something to do with green life didn’t stop grumbling about Lucas’s presence in the pack.
“Lori can mend him. She can heal him faster than all of us combined.” Otis seethed as Lucas was placed into the purifying lake.
The Menders were superior to regular Healers. While Healers and medical doctors in other packs work hand in hand to repair, sometimes leaving scars, Menders heal in a way that leaves no scar.
For instance, if a wolf loses an eye, healers can just stop the bleeding and heal the wound but Menders can give the eye back. Of course, their ability is limited and takes a lot of energy as they weren’t the goddess.
Lori, the most powerful Mender in the pack, muttered, “I’m not a magician. The purifying water will help him but he seems broken beyond his body. His mind and emotions are almost shattered.”
I just listened as I watched Lucas who was still in the lake. It was a good thing that Katie and Kyle were still playing outside with the kids. They didn’t notice Lucas or maybe they just weren’t expecting him to be here. At least they weren’t here to see him like this.
“We have to help him, Otis.” Susanna finally said something, a deep red blush creeping from her face down to her neck as she looked at him.
Otis who hadn’t realized that Susanna was crushing on him, hissed, “I’m not against helping him. I just believe having him here would put us in danger. We are still recovering and definitely not ready to get back into the world.”
“Do not forget that he is a legacy. His mother is the daughter of one of us and we can’t forget the part his parent played when we were under attack. They led the war against Black Fur and they are the reason our hiding place hasn’t been discovered.” Mia Lu stated.
However, Jeremy who took the place of the Beta after the escape from the war even though Mia Lu was considered the highest authority body because she was older, chimed, “We can’t dispute that fact, Mia Lu but we can’t let him wake up here and see our people. We are barely up to a hundred in this pack, most of which are teenagers and children. We can’t risk their lives just to play host to someone we don’t know.”
“I know him,” I blurted before I could stop myself, my eyes lingering on Lucas’s body.
His clothes were tartared, his body bruised and he looked like he had given up on living. All these made me wonder how many days he had spent in the wild-
“Oh, do you know?” Jeremy interrupted my thoughts. “I was made to believe he is your ex-mate. You can’t vouch for him and you can’t decide for us.”
“She can speak, Jeremy. She is one of us.” Lori came to my defense, cautioning Jeremy’s tone.
“One of us but not an Elder. The outside world has ruined her being, energy, and aura to the point that even you can’t mend her heart and her soul, Lori. Her son is also polluted and her daughter has the spirit of the wild-” Jeremy began.
But I stopped him right there. “You do not talk about my kids like that!” I seethed with a scorching glare. “You do not talk about what I have been through like that. You have been living within the shield for years while I had to navigate the outside world without a spiritual guide or a mender or trackers nor did I have someone that could show me the truth about my past. I survived alone, with my kids. Fuck you if you think you or anyone here are better than us.”
Jeremy was stunned to hear me put him in his place. He could have easily used my words against me but I had him tongue- tied. I was sure as hell that he was very young when he was taken away from the real world and hidden here. What does he know about tainted souls and broken spirits?
I refused to be bullied into silence by someone who spent most of his life tucked away within a protective shield.
“Y-you ca-can’t… You s-shouldn’t…” Jeremy spluttered.
“That’s enough.” Mia Lu intervened, authoritatively. “We are all right and our concerns are valid but this boy is family and we can’t throw him out until he gets better. Otis and other elemental wolves can make sure he never finds us by re-arranging the paths.”
“I guess we can do that.” Otis sighed, offering me a sad smile.
I instantly felt bad for lashing out and generalizing when I was speaking to Jeremy. I knew these people were kind and they had experienced their fair share of trauma. Most of them have lost their mates in the war and to reproduce, they had to settle down with wolves they didn’t share a bond with.
It wasn’t my place to tell them what to do with Lucas… I shouldn’t even be fighting for him.
After all, he was the reason my kids and I almost died. Lorraine targetted us to get to Lucas-
“There’s something different about him, Relia.” Inara countered. Well, that was strange. “I know but now that Tristan’s concoction isn’t blinding me and limiting my senses, I see Lucas in a new light. He was bad to us but something has changed. I can feel it-”
“You can’t feel anything for him, Ina. The bond is gone, remember? What you feel is pity.” I corrected my wolf while Mia Lu decided that Lucas would be let out as soon as he woke up.
As the elders left the hut, I couldn’t argue with their decision because the lives of the remaining white wolves were on the line. I wasn’t sure I could trust Lucas not to be as power-hungry as Tristan-
“You know your souls are identical.” Lori’s words hit my core. She chose to say that to me when it was just me and her in the hut with Lucas. I was about to argue but she added, “His cry for yours and yours cry for his as well. You have both been manipulated and it will take the goddess’s intervention for either of you to be whole again.”
Those words resonated in my soul hours after I left the hut to train with Susanna and I knew it was time to forgive Lucas… and let the past go.
