ALPHA RAIDEN
I didn’t know how long it took my unconscious mind to finally register the soft and small hand on my face. I didn’t know how long my eyes had been closed but I remembered my crazy experience in the forest while I was searching for my family.
I recalled getting bitten by a snake after exhausting my strength and I remember ripping the damn creature apart but that didn’t stop its poison from weakening me even more…
I knew that much, however, I didn’t know what or who the hand on my face belonged to.
Could it be another creature? Was I still in the wild?
I thought as I tried to open my eyes. I believed I was still in the wild all alone and maybe with another dangerous creature until my eyes fluttered open and my fuzzy gaze met with a familiar face.
“Ka-Katie…” I muttered, my dead daughter’s name rolling off my tongue as I looked at the illusion before me.
Snake poison could do that to one’s mind?
I was hallucinating-
“Mama, he’s awake.” My son’s voice smacked my eardrums, causing my eyes to shift to his small frame.
He’s an illusion too. I was sure of that.
My own mind was punishing me.
I closed my eyes, hoping that by the time I opened it, reality would kick in and I’d realize where I was.
“This is where you want to be, Lucas.” My wolf’s voice bounced off my mind. “This is no illusion and you don’t want to return to a world without the kids and-”
“But it’s an illusion, Lex. How did you even get rid of the poison? You were completely drained of energy when I passed out-” “Snap out of it, Lucas. This is real. The people in the room dispelled the poison, not me.” Lex etched with urgency.
I sighed, prepared to get hurt when I opened my eyes and found myself in the middle of the forest, all alone. However, my breath hitched when my lids parted, and contrary to my initial belief, the kids were still there and to make matters worse, I could see Fiona’s face above mine. I suddenly felt self-conscious and jolted into a sitting position.
“Y-you… H-how-” I stammered, ignoring the dryness in my throat.
“That was one long sleep, man. I thought you’d never wake up.” Before I could wrap my head around the presence of Fiona and my kids, a young man on my right voiced, his white hair standing out.
My brows knitted and my eyes found some other people in the strange room.
Where is this place?
Did I die too and I’m in the afterlife with-
“Are you throwing him out now?” Fiona’s whisper caught my attention even though my mind was still a little foggy and I still didn’t understand what was happening.
“If he doesn’t pass out, yes, we’ll throw him out any minute from now.” Another strange man muttered, answering Aureolia’s question.
“I still think it’s a bad idea, Otis” An older female chipped in, her hair just as white as the rest of the strangers. “He could die out there without proper-‘
“I’m not dead?” I blurted, cutting them all off. My eyes cut back to Fiona and the twins who were the closest to me. Katie grabbed my hand while Kyle folded his arms around his chest, reminding me that we weren’t on good terms. “Can someone just tell me what’s going on? I-
“I can tell you, son.” The oldest woman in the room said to me, answering my silent question. I didn’t think much about it until she started explaining, “You were bitten by a snake and found by our trackers and Lori here has been healing you for the past four days-”
“Did you just read my mind?” I asked, somehow certain that all of these weren’t real.
“Yes, Son.” The woman answered, surprising me.
However, nothing stunned me more than knowing where I was and with whom I had been for five days. The strangers took turns explaining to me and when they were done, I realized that I was amid white wolves.
I was not dead.
I just woke up in the midst of white wolves… same species that were believed to be extinct.
My family has been with them since they went missing while the rest of the world considered the possibility of their death. And they were about to throw me out of the pack.
With a wide awake and less confused mind, I announced, “You can’t throw me out.”
“Why can’t we?” The grumpy guy who was called Jeremy, scoffed. “You know more than you should know already-”
“I’m not going to hurt anyone_”
Jeremy argued again, “We’ve heard that one before. Guess what it did to us. Killed our people.”
I had heard the stories and still couldn’t believe that there was a hidden pack full of white wolves, however, I needed to be with my family. Since the strangers weren’t planning to let me stay, I looked at Fiona and my kids, relief flooding my senses for the first time since I witnessed the explosion.
They were alive, thanks to the white wolves.
A gush of emotions engulfed my heart as I smiled. I held Fiona’s gaze as I said, “I’ll leave now if you leave me with.” They were the reason I was here anyway. The white wolves were special but all I cared about was my Fiona and the kids.
But reality was smashed onto my delusional mind when Fiona shook her head and took a step back, “We can’t leave with you. We belong here with family…”
Of course, she chose strangers over me.
I was nothing to her.
