Hurt flashed through his eyes but I didn’t fret.
Saying no to him was the right thing to do-
“Even though you have been nursing him for the past four days? You didn’t leave his side and the kids had to be brought here because of that.” Inara called me out.
“Caring for a sick man doesn’t mean I’d leave with him, Ina-”
Inara scoffed, “He isn’t just a sick man, though. He’s our ex-mate and the father of our kids.”
“Emphasis on Ex, Ina.” I retorted stubbornly.
The kids have been just as worried as I was ever since they found out that their dad was in the pack and unconscious. They stayed with him while Lori did her best to mend his soul but she couldn’t.
Lori said to me, “You are the only one who can heal his soul. Just like you’re the only one who can heal your soul.”
She told me that two days ago after she assured me that Kyle’s lung disease would no longer be an issue and that my heart was getting better by the day.
I had abandoned my training since I could no longer focus on unlocking my ability with Lucas near me. I had wasted time by staying by his side just because I couldn’t fight the urge to be with him and care for him.
However, since he was awake, I had no reason to waste any more time.
He should leave so I could continue my training.
“Family? What is that supposed to mean, Fiona?” Lucas finally untied his tongue after I refused to leave with him.
The tension in the room was thick. I knew Jeremy was more than ready to show Lucas out and Otis was prepared to make sure Lucas never finds us again but why was it hard for me to accept that reality?
“Yes, Lucas. These people are my family-”
He shook his head, “No, Fiona. They are strangers. I came out here to look for you and the kids and I know have no reason to come home with me but I’m begging you, Fiona. Please come back with me.”
He didn’t understand.
I could tell that his greatest fear right now was seeing me return to Black Fur Pack. He probably believed I was refusing to go back with him because Tristan was still an issue but that wasn’t the case.
As if he could read my thoughts, Lucas continued without caring about the fact that we weren’t alone. He said without shame, “I know I severed the bond but I shouldn’t have done that. I know I acted like I was okay with you going back to Tristan but I’m not. I’m not okay with losing you, Fiona. Please, come with-”
“Tristan is married and mated to Lorraine, Lucas.” I blurted out, blinking back the tears that threatened to spill from my eyes not because of Tristan’s betrayal but because of the sincerity in Lucas’s voice.
Lucas gasped, “Huh?” If he didn’t know that, he must have been in the wild for over a week before he was found. “But he loves you.”
Saying that out loud must have killed Lucas but he did anyway.
I snorted, “Love has never been enough, right?”
It wasn’t enough when I got married to Lucas and neither was it enough when Lorraine manipulated our bond with her dark spells and tore us apart.
Still ignoring the presence of those around us, Lucas muttered, holding my gaze, “More reason why you should come home with me. I know you hate me and the kids do as well but my pack will always be home for you if you want-”
“This is my home, Lucas not your pack.” I countered. Before he could plead and make himself look pathetic before Jeremy who has been a pain in my ass, I added, “I’m a white wolf and this is my home. These are my people… my family.”
If he was shocked before, Lucas certainly lost every sense of understanding at this point. Inara let out a pitiful whimper, “He just woke up, Relia. Can he have a break?”
Well, he couldn’t.
I never got to have a break, why should he?
Lucas was quiet for what seemed like forever, Katie by his side and Kyle holding on to me.
Jeremy broke the silence in the room by saying, “Enough of the emotional talks. It’s time to go, Alpha Lucas.”
“She’s one of us. She’s safe with us and we trust her but we don’t trust you.” Otis backed Jeremy up but he did with a smile, unlike Jeremy. “They are in good hands.” “No, please.” Lucas stunned me when he began to beg. He didn’t mind appearing weak before these strangers. “I have made a lot of mistakes in the past but I’m not about to make the mistake of returning home without them. I promised my mom… I promised myself.”
“Just go, Lucas. Tell Iris we are fine,” I chimed.
Without thinking twice, Lucas announced, “If you can’t leave, then I’m staying here with you.”
Before his words could sink into me, Jeremy flared, “Hell no!”
“You can’t just throw me out. I pose no harm. My family is here and my mom is a part of this pack too-” Lucas began to argue desperately.
But Jeremy snapped, “You might as well leave with your family! We’re done trusting outsiders and risking our lives.” “That’s enough bickering for a lifetime.” Mia Lu exclaimed, putting an end to the argument. Jeremy tried to speak again but she shushed him, “Not another word, Jeremy. I have heard enough from you. Now I want to hear from Susanna.”
“Me?” Susanna who had been silent since she entered the hut asked, surprised.
“Yes, child. I want you to take his hand and tell us if we can let him stay or not.” Mia Lu affirmed, revealing her intention.
She wanted Susanna to read Lucas’s future.
“That’s extreme, Mia Lu. The future is dangerous even for Susanna.” Otis shook his head, objecting.
Susanna’s cheeks turned red but she stepped forward, “I love danger.”
She took Lucas’s hand and all I could say was I didn’t see this development happening. While Lucas stared at Susanna with confusion, I wondered what I would do if Lucas was allowed to stay.
Can my heart handle being close to him now that we had nothing standing between us except my refusal to forgive him?
