Katie and Kyle were beginning to get used to the uniqueness of this pack. They weren’t exactly surprised when Lucas’s eyes closed and his body went limp together with Susanna’s.
My heart was racing as a result of curiosity but it was more of uncertainty.
To my surprise, Katie held on to Lucas’s free hand, caressing it with gentility. Clearly, she was no longer mad at her Dad but it was quite the opposite for Kyle who wouldn’t leave my side.
“Can we let him stay, Mom?” Katie asked a question I knew she would throw at me.
However, before I could answer, Kyle grumbled with a pout of his own, “We agreed not to forgive anyone that hurt Mama, Katie. Why are you breaking our promise?”
“Because Mom taught us to forgive and Dad is sorry, Kyle. Can’t you feel it?” Katie muttered with conviction which made me look at Mia Lu with questions in my eyes.
Since when did Katie start feeling Lucas’s emotions? That’s highly impossible unless holding Lucas’s hand while he was holding on to Susanna was-
“Since when I started dropping the barrier I put between her natural bond with Lucas.” Inara voiced her confession, causing my racing heart to skip a beat. “I did the same with Kyle-”
“You did what?” I queried, seething at my wolf.
Inara etched, “I’m taking it down, Relia. It’s time to let the kids feel everything and decide-”
“Who’re you to decide that? You didn’t even tell me about taking the barrier down-”
“I didn’t tell you when I put it up and you were grateful I did. Why do I have to tell you now?” Inara retorted. “Whereas I’m your wolf. I’m you. Everything I do is in consideration of how you truly feel, Relia.”
“I don’t feel like letting Lucas know the kids, Ina-”
“That’s a huge lie and you know it. Just decide already.” Inara countered conclusively, her consciousness shrinking to the back of my mind.
No one, not even Mia Lu, could ease my mind and answer the questions plastered all over it. I was in a state of dilemma as silence took over the room and Lucas began to sweat even though the weather in this place was everything but hot.
After a few minutes of uncomfortable silence, Susanna’s eyes fluttered open and Lucas followed suit, gasping loudly as his soul returned to his body.
Without thinking twice, I blurted, “What did you see, Susanna?”
I looked at Lucas but he refused to meet my gaze as his chest rose and fell at full speed, causing my brows to knit.
Susanna stared at me with empty eyes as she responded, “What I saw is not mine to tell, Fiona but I can vouch for him by saying he can stay here. He’ll be of help to the pack if he does.”
The last part of her statement was directed to the elders still standing in the hut.
“Why can’t you tell me? His presence here will affect me,” I started to argue even before the Elders could utter a word.
Susanna’s head snapped towards me as she sighed, “Yes, it will and if I were you, I’ll be glad about that instead of being confused.”
Heck! What is that supposed to mean?
“If you want to know what I saw in his mind so badly, talk to him. Ask him, not me. I have played my part.” Susanna concluded before leaving the room like she needed to run… To escape any more questions.
“She is… they are both hiding something.” Even Inara could tell.
However, that didn’t stop the elders from concluding that Lucas could stay since Susanna had vouch for him. Jeremy didn’t seem pleased that he didn’t have his way but he was outnumbered.
Mia Lu gave me a sad smile and a gentle pat on the back before she left the hut with Lori behind her. “I’ll be in the purifying hut if you need me.”
“Thank you, Mia Lu.” I nodded with a forced smile.
Even after we were left alone with the kids, Lucas avoided my gaze, focused on Katie, and told her he was happy he got to stay.
“But you don’t feel happy. You’re sad.” Katie chimed, a frown on her small face.
“I feel your sadness too, Katie. Why are you sad?” Lucas muttered, his eyes glinting with unshed tears.
“I’m sad because you are sad,” Katie replied, sniffling back tears which made me wonder how much of Lucas’s emotion she could actually feel all thanks to Inara’s decision to take down the barrier.
But that made me ask why Kyle wasn’t feeling the same.
“He can feel everything Katie is feeling too. He’s just adamant on being his mama’s supporter.” Inara clarified.
Oh, my boy. He must be feeling torn at the moment-
“I am actually happy, Katie. I can finally feel and sense you and your body as mine. That’s the best feeling ever.” Lucas said to the twins, shifting his gaze between the both of them.
Why the hell is he not looking at me!
“You want him to look at you? I thought you didn’t want him to stay-” Inara began.
“Don’t patronize me.” I gritted at her.
Without wasting another second, I said to the kids, “Please go play outside. Mommy wants to talk to your daddy.”
Gladly, Kyle left the room but it took Katie another minute before she detached herself from Lucas. That girl was a betrayal, I must say but I love that betrayal.
“What do you plan to do here, Lucas?” I asked him as soon as we were alone.
Lucas finally met my gaze and I instantly sucked in a breath, feeling a magnetic link between us although our bond was broken completely. He murmured, “I plan to help us heal as a family. I plan to love you like you deserve and I plan to earn your forgiveness while at it.”
My heart forgot to beat just like I forgot to breathe.
