Fiona
Lucas led me to a more private area of the pack in silence. I tried to ignore the bile in my throat as Mia Lu’s words echoed in my mind. Mia Lu had made me realize that Lucas wasn’t the only one at fault.
I was too.
Yes, he hurt me- physically, mentally and emotionally.
Yes, he failed me as my mate.
Yes, he was wrong in many ways.
However, for how long would I hold on to the past? How long would I deprive myself of true happiness? I don’t have to fall in love with him but I could at least stop holding on to hate. I could give him a chance to prove himself to me and most especially the kids.
Doing that could also help me acquire massive spiritual energy-
“Please have a seat.” Lucas’s gentle tone called me out of my thoughts.
Our eyes met before mine fell to the fallen log of a tree he asked me to sit on. I sat and he did too, putting space between us. “I’m sorry for making you feel uncomfortable by asking you-” Lucas began with a sigh.
I cut in, gazing at the trees around us, “I’m comfortable, Lucas. You don’t have to apologize-”
“But you have been avoiding me.” Lucas countered, his gaze burning holes into the side of my face.
I tried to relax, inhaling the fresh air the trees provided and knowing that I couldn’t argue with Lucas’s observations. I avoided him because I didn’t know how to stop my heart from racing when he was close… When he looks at me.
“I’m not blaming you, Fiona and I know how hard all of these must be for you but I still have to try, right?” Lucas stated, his fists balled in a way that told me he was anxious.
I made him nervous.
“You can relax, Raidden. I won’t rip your head off with my teeth.” I said to him with a small smile. “What is it you wanted to tell me?”
“That’s a relief. I was expecting you to flare up anytime soon.” Lucas let out, laughing as he reminded me of the many times he tried to speak to me and we both ended up yelling at each other.
I laughed wholeheartedly with him. “You bring out the worst in me and I can’t even apologize for that.”
Surprisingly, Lucas and I threw a few jokes around, helping each other to relax and Lucas took it a step further when he said, “I wanted to ask you to dinner.” I didn’t understand him immediately and I found myself saying, “We have dinner with the entire pack-” The rest of my words caught in my throat when realization hit me like a rock.
“I’m asking you to have a private dinner with me, Fiona.” Lucas clarified, averting his eyes as a result of what I assumed was embarrassment.
“You want to eat alone with me?” I couldn’t believe my ears still.
Lucas nodded, “Yes but the kids are invited too. I’d like us to talk about our differences over dinner and-”
“Lucas, I don’t think-”
“I’ll cook, Fiona. Please.” Lucas blurted, our eyes connecting as he pleaded.
“You don’t even know how to cook.” I couldn’t stop myself from chuckling.
“I can get some help from the pack’s kitchen. Just say yes.” Lucas shook his head as I laughed at him.
Pulling myself together, I muttered, “I appreciate the invitation, Lucas but I have to tell you that you don’t have to talk to me over dinner. I know what you want from me because you have told me countless times-”
“Is that a no?” Lucas cut in, his face falling.
“Kinda. I’m not ready to have dinner with you and pour my heart out to you but I’m ready to let go of the past. Henceforth, I will stop blaming you’
“You can blame me, Fiona. I messed up.” Lucas chipped in before I could complete my statement.
“But I want to forgive you, Lucas. I’ll try to forgive you.” I retorted calmly. “I don’t know how long it will take but I’ll get there.”
After a few minutes of silence, Lucas voiced, “Do you intend to give me another chance when you get there?”
“Another chance?” I asked, truly confused.
Lucas replied, “Another chance to be your mate, Fiona.”
The way he said those words together with my name made my breath hitched. My heart did a little flip back as my stomach twisted in a way that made me wonder how nice it would be to build a relationship with the father of my kids.
But then I recalled- the bond we shared was broken.
And I wasn’t ready to love again.
“Your silence is enough answer. I completely understand.” Lucas etched sulkingly. I didn’t know what to say to that, but fortunately for me, Lucas continued, rising to his feet, “I should join Otis and the other guys. They are training-”
“I don’t think I can love you or anyone again, Lucas but we can get to know each other this time. We don’t have to rush into anything like we did in the past and if we develop feelings, we’ll know that it’s genuine.” I revealed my thoughts. “I can’t promise you-”
“It’s alright, Fiona but do know that I’ll not stop chasing you. I already developed feelings for you and even though it took losing you for me to realize that, my feelings are genuine. I want you back and I plan to get you back not as my acquaintance who birthed my kids but as my mate who I’d love and cherish forever.” Lucas stunned me into silence as he casually confessed his feelings and intentions. “I’ll see you around.”
Although Lucas left me speechless, the next week, I was having a private dinner with him and the twins… And he cooked, traumatizing Katie who vowed never to eat any food prepared by Lucas again even if it was a bowl of cereal.
