ALPHA RAIDEN
“Someone looks happy and radiant this morning.” Otis crackled as I stepped onto the small training field the pack had.
The big smile on my face grew even bigger as I shook his hand, paying zero attention to Jeremy who simply grumbled at my presence.
“You are talking about you, right?” I feign ignorance and it is chuckled, shaking his head.
“Stop fooling around. I’m certain your-” Otis began to counter.
However, Jeremy snickered without an iota of niceness, “Yes, stop fooling around. We have to train. We have to be ready.” My brows furrowed, “Ready for what?”
Otis and Jereney exchanged looks and I figured Otis lied to me when he responded, “Ready to go hunting for the week, Alpha Lucas.”
I didn’t push any further, as he invited me to duel with him. But at that moment, Fiona, the reason for the happiness I had been drowning in, sauntered to the training field with Susanna beside her and, of course, my little girl, Katie.
Why wouldn’t I be happier?
Fiona has been less mean to me since we talked and I confessed my intention with everything in me. I needed her to know and from the countless smiles she had flashed my way in the past few days, I knew she understood me better.
Undoubtedly, I didn’t deserve her but was willing to become a worthy man.
Kyle wasn’t on the field but I wasn’t worried. I was already familiar with the twins’ routine. In fact, I was familiar with my family routine. Fiona always takes up to train physically first, then joins Mia Lu to train spiritually. She has also been spending time with Lori in the purifying hut. I knew all about her determination to unlock her powers and discover herself and I couldn’t help but be proud of the woman she had become.
And I was grateful this new development had nothing to do with that bastard, Tristan. I found out he was now mated to Lorraine. Susanna told me all about it and that knowledge helped me to understand the reason why Fiona hated him more than she could ever despise me.
Enough about Fiona…
“We can’t have enough of her.” Lex chined happily in my mind. My wolf had become a different being.
I could sense his strength increasing with every day we spent in this pack, around these people, and most importantly, with our small family.
I sent a prayer to the moon goddess, thanking her for the second chance she was giving me. Even if Fiona never loved me, I got a chance to make up for the past and love her forever. The kids will forever be a blessing.
My eyes darted to Katie who had joined some of the bigger kids to train. My little girl was just as fierce as my bigger girl if I could call Fiona that.
Kyle on the other hand was definitely with the older scribes who keep books about the pack safe. That little man would most likely grow up to become a librarian- a bookkeeper like his grandmother. My mom loved books and I could see her in Kyle.
I didn’t have a definite routine. If I’m not on the training field with Katie and Fiona, I’ll be with Kyle and his books. I made sure to spend time with every one of them.
“It’s a pity activities are limited here because of the situation of the pack,” Lex said to me, my eyes still on Fiona.
“Maybe but I believe this gives us the opportunity to bond over the smallest things,” I responded to my wolf as my eyes shifted to Katie’s small frame.
Suddenly, a sharp pain cracked through my jaw as Otis’s firm fist connected with my jawline. “Ouch!” I let out jokingly despite the pain.
“Serves you right for accepting a duel with me only to give your mind and senses away to your ex-mate.” Otis joked as well.
Hearing people around here call Fiona my ex-mate was a jab to my heart but I couldn’t renounce that compound word because it was a fact… but not for long.
To get Otis back, I muttered, “I saw Susanna ogling your sweaty chest a few minutes-”
“For real?” Otis exclaimed, losing his focus as his head snapped away from me, his eyes searching the field for Susanna.
I took advantage of his mindlessness and paid him back with his own coin. My fist met with his jaw as lightly as it could but Otis still stumbled backward, groaning in pain which was more related to his ego than physical pain.
“Serves you right for ogling a woman who isn’t your ex-mate.” I chined, chuckling as his face became red.
Training was soon called to an end and while Otis and Ross gathered some men around to go hunting for food, I was called aside by Fiona… yes! For the first time in ages, she approached me and initiated a conversation with me.
“Hi.” She murmured, sweat glinting on her skin from the intensive training session.
“Hey.” I chimed right back. “You look good.”
I meant that with every fiber of my being. Her blue eyes were twinkling with indescribable joy and her hair which she had cut short while in Tristan’s pack was beginning to grow back into the length I loved. She looked equally breathtaking with both lengths, I must admit and I was starting to notice that the black color I was used to was fading, giving way to the whitish-gray color of the white wolves.
“I doubt that but thank you.” Fiona breathed with a shy smile. Her eyes skimmed over my appearance and I immediately blamed myself for not putting effort into my choice of clothes and style of hair before coming to the field-
“Her wolf doesn’t seem to mind your appearance,” Lex informed me, sounding like a love-struck puppy as he perceived Fiona’s wolf.
Would I ever get used to this? This feeling of want, of need, and of losing my breath every time I look into her eyes? Would it ever get old? I hoped not.
“I thought to inform you that the kids’ sixth birthday is fast approaching,” Fiona declared, her eyes telling the sad tale her tongue didn’t.
She was sad even though she was talking about the twins’ birthday. Could that have something to do with what I did in the past?
“When?” I asked, taking note of the way she blinked rapidly like she was trying not to lose herself to the sadness she refused to display.
Fiona answered, “It’s four days away. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier. I forgot about it until yesterday.”
This place could do that to anyone. I have been here for three weeks and it feels like five days.
“We’ll be throwing a small party for them. A very small one because resources are limited around here.” Fiona stated.
“Is there something you aren’t telling me? Your eyes tell a different–” I started, wanting to take her sorrows away.
But Fiona exhaled, “It’s just good to know you’ll be there to celebrate them. Six years later but you know what I’m saying.”
“Yeah. I’m happy too.” I nodded.
She didn’t tell me what I wanted to hear but what she did tell me made me realize that I had to make this birthday as grand as possible.
It was my first with the kids and it should be memorable.
But how do I achieve that here in the hidden pack?
