Fiona
When I said I didn’t remember the kids’ birthday until yesterday, I lied.
I lied to Lucas.
My heart was heavy as I left Lucas’s side, and walked back to Susanna who had become my training partner in place of Jessica. Of course, she couldn’t replace Jessica because she was physically weaker in comparison and because there would only be one Jessica.
“You could have told him. He could sense the lie and your sadness-” Inara began just as I reached Susanna’s side and she looped our hands together.
“How could I? I doubt he recalls anything about Dakota. Phoebe is the only living person who would know and sadly, we aren’t in the same pack and won’t be able to hold a proper ceremony for Dakota together.” I interjected my wolf.
Dakota’s remembrance ritual should be held on the same day my kids turn six but I couldn’t do it alone and I wasn’t sure it was advisable to hold a death remembrance ceremony on the same day as the twins’ birth remembrance.
I could be jinxing the lives…
But it also occurred to me that, the twins wouldn’t have had life without Dakota’s help.
“She perceived them first,” Inara said emotionally even though she didn’t get to know Dakota the way I did.
“She saved our lives. I can’t even begin to imagine what Lorraine would have done to us if Dakota hadn’t helped us escape.” I stated, my mind wandering to a possible past.
If I hadn’t escaped, Lorraine and Lucas would have completed the mating ritual. After all, my escape disrupted the process and I was certain Lorraine would have found a way to make sure my babies were never born.
She would have killed us all and achieved her goal.
Easily if I may add as I was weak and pathetic back then-
“A penny for your thoughts.” Susanna chirped in a singsong tone.
I forced a smile, “In this pack, we are penniless, My dear.”
Susanna gasped, acting shocked, “Nice comeback.”
“From whom do you think Katie got her sass from?” Susanna succeeded in making me forget my worries.
But it only lasted a second. The next second, she asked, “But seriously, what’s bothering you? You should be hyped for your babies’ birthday.”
I heaved heavily, “I want to be hyped, Susy, but it just happens that my twins’ birthday is the same as someone’s death day.” “Someone you know?” Susanna asked, expressing both confusion and worry.
“Yes, the only person I knew as a parent. Someone who stood by me and loved me.” I muttered in response, swallowing the urge to cry. “Someone I loved dearly…”
To my surprise, Susanna blurted, “Dakota?”
My eyes widened as my brows furrowed, “How do you know her?”
“I have been in your memories, remember?” Susanna replied with a reassuring smile and I nodded. What I would give to have the kind of access Susanna’s ability gives her. “From what I saw, she loved you and she wouldn’t want you to be unhappy on your kids’ special day.”
“But I want to celebrate her. I want the world to know who she was and the afterlife to know that they have a great person there.” I poured out my heart to Susanna as we entered the purifying hut where Mia Lu and Lori were, talking about the pack or something.
“I believe we can do something about that. The world might not get to know but the afterlife can feel it.” Susanna said to me before telling Lori and Mia Lu about my worries.
Lori nodded, holding my gaze, “The white wolves have a way of celebrating the dead under the moonlight, Fiona. We can do that for the person who showed one of us love while she was all alone.”
For the first time that day, I smiled as relief pumped into my veins. “I’d really appreciate that.”
“Great. We’ll honor her at midnight before the twins’ birthday.” Mia Lu said eagerly and I could have sworn I sensed something else from her.
As if she was grateful for Dakota… that wouldn’t have been weird if she was me. Scrutinizing Mia Lu, I chimed, “Thank you so much.”
The trio muttered simultaneously, “Our pleasure.”
Lori continued speaking, “We came up with a new way to trigger your family ability and personal one. We don’t know which one you will get first but this will help you find ”
Excitedly, I cut in, taking a sit on the floor with Lori who had been sitting beside the purifying lake, “When can we start?” Mia Lu laughed out loud, “We start now, child. You are ready.”
“Awesome!” I fist-bumped the air the same way Katie would have done if she was to be gifted a shiny sword.
