The excitement coursing through me was intoxicating.
This was it.
I get to finally have something that would connect me to my roots on a deeper level. Mental connection was cool but this would be cooler.
“Goddess please let’s this work. Help me find my identity.” I muttered a silent prayer but everyone was within earshot. They heard me clearly and felt my excitement.
I was laughed at but soon I was asked to sit within the shallow lake and I was joined by the trio- Susanna, Mia Lu, and Lori. They held one another’s hands, forming a small circle around me.
“Close your eyes, child, and search deep within you.” Mia Lu’s voice called for utmost obedience.
I did as told and the trio began to chant in a language I didn’t understand. However, the chants helped me relax and my mind opened up, my heart beating fast yet steadily. Minutes passed and I didn’t feel anything aside from the relaxation the water and chants provided.
Nothing happened differently, not until I inhaled deeply and a rush of energy flowed through my body. I felt a profound force colliding with that energy and that caused my head to fall backward, my body jerking like I was having a seizure.
All of a sudden, the once loud chants became serene like I was far away from the trio.
And maybe I was because the next second, my eyes flew open as if they grew a mind of their own and I found myself in something similar to the realm Susanna led me to when she held my hand. Only this time, I was alone with a small yet bright light calling to me.
Even in that state, I wondered if I was just like Susanna. I did wish for the kind of access she had but that thought dissipated when the small light glowed, becoming bigger, big enough to grasp my attention, revealing a very familiar frame.
“Mia Lu…” I called out as her frame became more visible.
However, she was still, lying down. Her skin was pale and it was as if she was drained of life. I took a step closer to her but before I could reach her or confirm her state, her frame vanished and the light became even bigger.
For a moment, I felt disoriented and lost but another revelation caught my attention with the help of the light.
This time, I saw people from the hidden pack moving, walking away from the current pack area. I tried to make sense of that, but the light spread again, forcing me to close my eyes until I heard a loud grunt, followed by another and another…
Soon, I was thrown into the middle of a war, blood splashing, and bodies falling on all sides. Shakingly, I breathed, “Oh, dear goddess…”
I couldn’t hear my own voice in this realm but I knew I spoke. My hands began to shake before my entire body caught it too. As if that wasn’t enough to make me collapse, I saw myself. I saw a version of me with longer and full white hair.
A version of me who was sitting on the floor, holding onto a body I couldn’t see from where I was standing and screaming like the world was ending… Her world was ending, right in the middle of a bloody war.
“Who? Who am I holding?” I asked myself, curiosity kicking in and against my anxiety.
Did I lose someone else?
Who?
When?
But the answers I tried to chase down escaped me when I was pulled out of the realm by Mia Lu’s voice. I opened my eyes and fear took control of me but the trio didn’t see it as Lori announced with an unmeasurable amount of happiness, “She is a Seer. We have a Seer, Mia Lu.” So I just had a glimpse into the future?
This was so much different from the visions I had in the past. This was clearer, scarier, and draining.
How soon is this future that I just saw?
“What’s the vision, child?” Mia Lu asked but I couldn’t form words.
I mean, do I tell her I saw her lifeless body? Or that we were all doomed and my mourning days haven’t even begun?
I took it back. I don’t want to have powers.
“Please take it back, goddess…” I cried internally but something told me there was no going back now.
Mia Lu’s voice resonated again, “Kindly share the vision with us, child.”
I didn’t know how they figured out that I was a Seer but I sure as hell knew I couldn’t share this bad, horrible vision with anyone. not even Mia Lu who could easily read my thoughts.
Think of something else, Fiona… anything but the vision.
“Fiona, are you alright?” Susanna asked me, taking my hand.
“I think I need a nap. my mind is foggy.” I subtly retract my hand from Susanna.
She wouldn’t read me without my permission but I couldn’t take any chances.
“I’ll help you to your room,” Susanna said and Mia Lu didn’t push any further.
I followed Susanna out and she supported my weight as my legs wobbled, reminding me of the amount of spiritual and physical energy I had burnt even though I didn’t see everything I should have seen. Susanna helped me lie on my bed before she excused herself,
“Can the future be changed, Susy?” I blurted out before she could leave my hut.
She looked back at me as she responded with an unreadable face, “Unless the Goddess is willing, the future remains the same, my dear.”
I didn’t know what broke me more, the visions or Susanna’s last words before she left me to wallow in my thoughts.
