Otis’s power shouldn’t be undermined. With him accompanying me, I realized that the forest wasn’t as big as I thought it was. What wolves like me see and try to navigate is an illusion and it was made to trap us without leading us to the location of the hidden pack.
That was brilliant and would come in handy in times of war.
I still couldn’t understand why the white wolf lost to Black Fur during the Great War.
“They didn’t know how to utilize their abilities in a war and maximize their resources. They were too kind.” Lex answered that question and I couldn’t argue with him.
Regardless of my thoughts, we reached the cliff in no time, the darkness of the night shielding us as we began to dash through a much more familiar forest. At least for me. Otis followed my lead and surprisingly, he was able to keep up with my speed.
As soon as I was close enough to the pack, I opened my mind and searched for my connection to Andrew. My mind was a bit rusty after almost a month of zero connection with my pack but Andrew connected with me immediately.
“Oh dear goddess, Lucas!” My Beta gasped into my mind, his relief flooding my system faster than fatigue could. “I thought we lost you, man.”
“I was lost but someone found me,” I responded, laughing through the connection while maintaining my pace as I dashed closer to my pack borders.
“You know what I mean. Don’t joke around.” Andrew grumbled.
“I’m not dead, Drew, and I am close to the pack. I need you to clear a path for me. I don’t want to be seen by anyone as I enter the pack neither do I want anyone but you to sense my arrival.” I instructed my Beta even though I knew he was ready for more chitchat.
“Goddess, I missed your bossy and annoying attitude. I was tired of being the boss around here.” Andrew didn’t hesitate to complain to me but he also bounced into action. “I’ll wait for you by the eastern border, Alpha.”
To ease his mind, I chimed to him, “I’ve missed you, Drew. I miss home.”
I wasn’t sure I missed the pack but I missed people that made it home- Andrew, and my mom. Staying with the white wolves has helped me beyond my expectations and having my family there made it easier to blend in.
“Why do I feel like you don’t mean that?” Andrew asked and I could feel him rolling his eyes even though I couldn’t see him. He and Otis would hit it off, I could already tell.
I chuckled and masked my scent. I told Otis to do the same and he had no problem doing that as he could easily take on the scent of the leaves around or even the earth because he was an elemental wolf.
As soon as we arrived at the border, Andrew stepped forward to receive us. He was surprised to see Otis but he didn’t ask any question about him. “Follow me,” Andrew said and we did.
Stepping into my pack after weeks of absence gave me a surge of energy and my authority as an Alpha resurfaced. I struggled to keep my presence masked from my pack members and as if Otis could sense my struggles, he placed his hand on my shoulder and said, “Let me help you. Relax.”
Without much effort on my part, the core of my being relaxed. I stated, “Thank you.”
Otis nodded, oblivious to Andrew’s curiosity.
Rather than lead us to my mansion, Andrew took us to his place where I believed we would have more privacy. Andrew also explained after he shut the door behind him, “I believe people are watching your mansion. The pack has been anxious for your return.”
“But you have done well. You kept everyone in their place despite my absence. Thank you, Drew.” I said to my Beta, trying to change the subject because I wasn’t ready to answer the question I knew he was about to blurt.
I didn’t know when I’d return to the pack and take my place.
‘Andrew, this is Otis. he’s one of the people that found me and saved my life.” I introduced Otis to my Beta and looked at Otis as I said, “Otis, meet my Beta.”
While Otis simply nodded, his eyes shifting nervously, Andrew closed the distance between them and shook Otis’s hand.” Thank you. The Crescent Pack is indebted to you.”
“Don’t mention. Alpha Lucas is family.” Otis uttered, causing my brows to furrow but before I could make any sly comment, Otis concluded, “One comment from you and I’ll take that back.”
I raised my hands in surrender, facing Andrew who seemed amused. I said to my Beta, “I need resources, Drew. Food items, anything you can get for a party and-”
“You aren’t staying?” Andrew questioned with a deep frown.
Shaking my head, I answered, “I can’t stay, Drew. I’ve to go back-”
“But you have found them, right? I know you wouldn’t have returned otherwise and you wouldn’t be planning a party.” Andrew cut in, obviously unhappy about the news.
But I said to him, “Yes, I found them and they are safe, Drew. It’s the twins’ birthday in two days and I have to go back to celebrate with them.”
“You came home just for resources?” Andrew asked. His eyes told me he was wondering why I’d travel down just for that. He would understand if he knew that I had been sleeping in a hut for the past weeks and if he knew what the hidden pack was like but since I couldn’t tell him about the white wolves, I sighed, “Yes, and a few gift items.”
Despite his obvious displeasure, Andrew nodded. He promised to get everything I needed before sundown the next day so Otis and I could travel back before the twins’ birthday. Keeping secrets from Andrew was difficult but having to hide from my mom while I was in the same pack with her topped that.
“I wish we could see her and tell her that Fiona and the Kids are fine.” Lex whimpered to me.
However, I knew my mom would want to know more, and knowing more would mean I was prepared to take her to the hidden pack with me.
I kept thoughts of my mom out of my mind as Otis and I got comfortable in Andrew’s home. I assumed my plan to leave without getting detected wouldn’t fail until Andrew returned the next afternoon with a plus one.
A very angry plus one.
“Mom.” I breathed nervously, averting my gaze from her blazing eyes.
I should have known Andrew couldn’t hide my presence from her and it wasn’t shocking when she burst into tears, “I didn’t even get invited to my grandbabies’ sixth birthday party. How could you hate me this much, Lucas?”
Although I wanted to roll my eyes and say something like, “Hello, Drama Queen”, I pulled my mom into my arms instead and yes, I ended up telling her and Andrew everything. In fact, Otis joined me as my mom charmed him.
So much for keeping secrets but it felt good to open up to someone after weeks of holding everything in. Hopefully, I’d get to open up to Fiona about my predicted future the next time I see her.
