ALPHA RAIDEN
“You are fucking crazy, Jeremy.”
How I wished those words were mine but Otis beat me to calling Jeremy what he is- A crazy but highly observant man. He must have been observing everyone in this pack to ensure the survival of his kind all these years for him to have noticed that Otis and I were gone.
“Susanna wouldn’t have made it easy for him to notice but he did regardless.” Even my wolf agreed with me.
Susanna chimed with relief, “Oh, look. There they are. You were just being loud for nothing.”
Jeremy’s face twisted into a frown and I knew he couldn’t believe his eyes. Truth was, we would have executed the plan and made Jeremy look like a foolish and crazy man who was obsessed with me if my mom wasn’t standing behind me.
Yes, she followed Otis and me here because she didn’t want to miss the twins’ birthday and she was also excited about seeing Mia Lu again. Apparently, they used to know each other.
“Well, you are not completely crazy, Jeremy. You were partially right.” I announced to everyone who had come out and created a circle around Jeremy, Susanna, and Fiona who appeared pale and sweaty despite the cool air of the night. “Otis and I left the pack. I didn’t kidnap him. He followed me willingly—”
“And you brought back a lot of items and a person.” Jeremy completed my statement even though those weren’t the words I would have used.
All eyes turned to my mom and she brimmed with happiness despite the tension in the air. My mom introduced herself, excitement twinking in her eyes, “Hello, everyone. I’m Iris, mother of the Alpha Of Crescent Pack and-”
“One of us.” Mia Lu voiced from the back and she made her way forward, her eyes mirroring the emotions in my mom’s. “Oh, look how much you have grown, child.”
“Tamia Lu.” My mom shook her head as she closed the distance between her and Mia Lu with open arms, “It’s so good to see you again after many years of searching. Thank you for staying alive.”
Mia Lu responded with live as she and my mom embraced each other without minding the eyes on them, “It’s good to be alive to witness this day.”
Soon, Otis addressed the pack telling them that they could go back to bed and I thought about how Andrew had helped us transport the party and gift items and other resources to the cliff before he turned back, returning to the pack.
My eyes found Fiona again and I just knew something was wrong with her. She was worried and looked almost sick.
I waited until everyone left, leaving a few of us- Mia Lu, my mom, Susanna, Otis, Fiona, and surprisingly, Jeremy- before pointing out the food items and asking how we could make the small party a lot less small before noon.
Mia Lu groaned, “I’m too old for this. I need to sleep and catch up with this one.”
In other words, my mom.
Without hesitating, my mom hugged Fiona warmly and told her it was good to see her again and that she would be back to plan the party with us before walking off with Mia Lu. Otis and Susanna began to move the bags we brought from my pack and Jeremy was forced to help but not until Susanna apologized for calling him crazy.
At that moment, It was just Fiona and me, and she was standing akimbo, glaring at me as if she wanted to melt my skull.
“Hey…” I said nervously even though what I wanted to say was, “Are you sure you can’t tell me what’s bothering you?” But yeah, I settled for Hey.
“Hey?” Fiona gritted. “You left the pack without telling me and I had to find out from Jeremy who didn’t get his facts right and all you say to me is hey?”
“I’m sorry, Fiona-”
“Yes, you should be sorry.” She snapped but I didn’t miss the swift change in her tone when she said, “I thought you left and kidnapped Otis truly. It sucks to think you were power hungry but do you know what sucked more?”
I assumed that was a rhetorical question so I held my tongue and Fiona continued speaking, “Thinking that you were really gone and I was alone again. A lone to wake our kids up with kisses on their birthday even though I knew it could have been different if you were there…. If you didn’t love another-”
We were no longer talking about the presence. Obviously.
Fiona stopped herself before she could slap me in the face with my past mistakes which I would have loved because I was dumb. I should have told her my plans instead of leaving her in the dark.
“I thought it would be another birthday without you. The kids would have hate that. I’d have hated that- “Fiona burst into tears and I’d be a dumbass to not know that she wasn’t crying just because I didn’t tell her about my plans or because she was scared I wouldn’t be around.
There was something else she wasn’t saying.
I took a step forward and pulled her into my arms as that felt like the right thing to do. She held on to my sleeve as she cried even harder, her body shaking against mine as I apologized over and over again.
“You know you can tell me whatever it is that has you worried and sad, Fiona. Let me share the burden with you.” I thought saying that would help her open up to me but she pulled herself out of my arms, taking steps backward to put space between our bodies.
“Like you told me about what Susanna saw in your future?” Fiona sniffled, saying those words with an unreadable face. When I failed to respond, she concluded, “Oh, you didn’t tell me and I know you won’t tell me now even if I beg you so no, Lucas, we have nothing to share.”
She snatched four bags from the floor, two in each hand, and walked away. I followed her with the remaining bags in my hand, putting the kids’ gifts aside. We spent the rest of the night planning a bigger party for Katie and Kyle and Fiona and I pretended to be okay with keeping secrets from each other.
