“Happy Birthday!”
This is the ritual. It has been for the past six years.
I gather people the twins are familiar with and wait outside my bedroom door, In Tristan’s pack it was a mini apartment but here in the hidden pack, it was a wooden hut. Yet the ritual remains the same.
We waited for Katie and Kyle to come out of the hut together, as I knew they would, and blurted those two words with bright smiles, warm hearts, and all the energy we could summon.
However, unlike their previous birthdays, I wasn’t alone at the front of the familiar crowd. Lucas was with me and we stood side by side with outstretched arms. Katie ran into my arms and Kyle went to Lucas their faces reflecting their joy.
Also, Iris who had tears in her eyes, stood behind me, her voice being the loudest as we collectively sang for Katie and Kyle. Iris could have passed for the happiest person today if Katie wasn’t squealing… Loudly.
“It’s our birthday?” Kyle couldn’t believe it as he grinned from ear to ear, hugging Lucas.
Katie added, “And everyone is here.”
I couldn’t agree more. Everyone was around for them.
Lucas and their grandma, Mia Lu, and every other member of the pack, and I was there too.
If I had any worries, I forgot about them at that moment.
“We also have many surprises for you both but you have to freshen up and get dressed,” I informed my babies and their joy knew no bounds.
Lucas etched in support, “And guess what? Not only did I get you a princess dress, Katie, and a charming outfit for you, Kyle, I’ll also be helping you as you freshen up and dress up.”
He didn’t tell me that even though we had spent the past few hours of the night replanning the kids’ party with Susanna, Ross, Otis, Iris, and Jeremy, who stayed with us just to spy on us. He never tells me anything-
“Cut him some slack, Relia. You’ve been mad all night even though he apologized to you and it’s the twins’ birthday for goddess’s sake. Let him make it a special day.” Inara hissed at me mostly because she knew I wasn’t exactly mad at Lucas. It was just easier to act like Lucas was the problem. However, my wolf spelled out to me, “Today isn’t about you. If he wants to bath the kids, let him and stop being a mean bitch.”
I gasped through the bond, “Oh, thank you for the support. I feel so much better.”
Regardless of my sarcastic response, Inara replied, “You’re so welcome.”
I laughed and focused on my kids as Lucas took Katie from me, carrying both twins in his arms. The small crowd slowly became just Iris and me as everyone returned to their hut to start the day properly.
Iris hugged me. She has been doing that with every opportunity she got since she arrived in the wee hours of the morning. She sighed, “Thank you for the gift of them. They are so precious.”
I could tell she was crying again even though her face was in the nook of my shoulder. I patted her back, letting my emotions flow as well, and stated, “They are precious and I’m grateful for your presence.”
“I’m more grateful that you all made it out of Lorraine’s plot alive. I was worried when Lucas and the men returned to the pack without you and the kids on several occasions. Fortunately, Lucas decided to step out alone to find you. He vowed not to return without you and the kids even though we weren’t sure you survived.”
I pulled back enough to look at Iris’s face, “He came out to look for us despite the possibility that we could be dead?”
I had not thought about this before for some reason but having this conversation with Iris opened my eyes to the kind of distress that Lucas had to endure to get to us… and I wanted him to be thrown out after he regained consciousness.
Way to go Fiona…
“He was determined and sad. I was scared for him but thankfully, we are all here today celebrating.” Iris smiled, changing the subject.
I nodded before following her back to the kitchen where Susanna was. We started cooking for the party, using the ingredients Lucas brought back from Crescent. We had help while cooking just like we were helped when we started setting up the party venue on the biggest field within the shield.
No doubt, this party would be a feast. One that the white wolves haven’t had in a while.
While I was out there, perfecting everything for Katie and Kyle, I wondered what Raoden was doing with the kids. Princess dress and a charming outfit? Goddess, I couldn’t wait to see my babies…
And a tiny part of me couldn’t wait to see them with Lucas… there was just something about seeing them with me that gave me peace.
“Peace? More like butterflies.” Inara scoffed with mockery.
“Don’t get ideas-”
“Denial is not just a river, you are made from water taken from it and, in fact, the river resides in you. I can’t wait to see you trash it.” Inara cut in and I suddenly missed the days that she was anti-Lucas. “When you do, you might not be you anymore but you will be a better and happier person-‘
“Enough, dammit!” I gritted with a hot face.
Gosh, I hate Inara.
