ALPHA RAIDEN
The white wolves still feasted on the resources I brought from my pack for the next five days. The hunters were relieved and everyone could relax. Everyone but Fiona and I, of course.
The mother of my kids has been doing what she knew how to do best- Pretend like I wasn’t in her life.
Fiona has been avoiding me and that wasn’t new but what was new was how she had gradually become paler and she seemed to be avoiding everyone aside from the twins. It was almost as if her skin color was fading along with that of her hair.
How I wished she would talk to me.
But at least Katie and Kyle were talking to me and my mom was making herself at home with the white wolves. She looked more alive now and I couldn’t be more grateful-
Fuck that. I could be more grateful If Fiona would just meet my eyes or talk to me and let me in.
She was driving me crazy.
“Perhaps you shouldn’t have asked to kiss her,” Lex grumbled, watching Fiona through my eyes as she followed Mia Lu and Lori to the purifying hut.
“I am not sorry, Lex. I felt that and I told her,” I said to my wolf even though a part of me agreed with him.
The kind of hunger I felt for her that night can’t be explained or described with mere words. It consumed me and even though I knew she wouldn’t let me kiss her, I had to ask… If she had let me, I most likely wouldn’t have stopped with one kiss-
“Trouble in paradise?” My mom’s voice cut my sensual thoughts short.
She had managed to walk up to me and stand by my side without getting my attention. My gaze shifted from the purifying hut to my mom’s smaller frame and I nodded, opening a mind link between us both. “I’m worried about her, Mom but she won’t tell me what’s happening. With every day that passes, she becomes paler and-”
“Worrying won’t help either of you, Lucas. Fiona has been using her spiritual energy more these days according to what I have been able to observe. I found out she is a Seer and she has been seeing visions but has refused to share them with anyone, not even Mia Lu.” My mom explained to me, her voice resonating in my mind.
I inhaled sharply.
A Seer?
What if she already had visions about the future I didn’t want her to know about?
Could that be why she has been avoiding me?
I don’t think she knows yet.
She would have found me and ripped my head off if she knew. Right?
“Since the Great War, Fiona is the only Seer to emerge. Now I understand how she found Lorraine’s prison and saved me. She really is the key.” My mom added, oblivious to how her words made my heart race.
My legs grew a mind of their own as I began to panic and they moved towards the purifying hut. My mom called after me but I was too worried to respond. Speaking to Fiona immediately was all I could think of, react to, and execute.
“Can we talk?” I blurted as soon as I reached the entrance of the hut.
Fiona wasn’t the only one within the hut but my eyes settled on her instantly and I was certain everyone knew she was the one I was here for.
“I’m sorry, Lucas but I can’t talk to you now. I need to get into the lake with-”
“Please let’s talk now.” I insisted, scared of what she would see if she got into Seer mode… if she hadn’t seen it already.
Fuck! I should have told her sooner.
Fiona’s mouth opened and I knew she was about to argue or even yell at me as her face twisted but Lori;s worried voice hit my eardrums faster than Fiona’s argument, “I am still against trying again and you need a break, Fiona. This is a great time for you to do something other than trying to get a clearer glimpse into the future. You could hurt yourself and I won’t be able to mend you today.”
“I agree with Lori, Child. I know you are confused about the visions you have refused to share with us. You can tell us about it – Telling us will give us the chance to understand them and help you interpret them. It will save time and save your energy. If you collapse like you have been doing these past few days, I’m afraid Loris is too weak to mend you and-”
“You just want me to tell you the visions, Mia Lu. That’s all you care about!” Fiona snapped at the older woman, pulling her own hair aggressively right before tears began to trickle down her face as she muttered, “Okay, I’ll tell you. I’ll tell you about how I saw your body, Mia Lu, lifeless yet peaceful.”
Aurelai’s voice broke. She started crying profusely and all too suddenly but no one moved to console her not even me. We were all stunned by her revelation but I was also worried she would talk about me next.
“You died, Mia Lu, and knowing that has been killing me. The pack will have to move and there will be a war, a big bloody war where many will lose their lives and I don’t know how to prevent it! I don’t even know when it would happen. I also don’t know who died in my arms. The visions aren’t clear enough but they are real and I die every time I have to relive the scenes-‘ Her voice broke again and I finally understood why her skin had been pale, her face puffy and absentminded. “This is torture. I don’t want this power. I want to be able to sleep peacefully. I want the dreams to end.” Fiona broke down completely. “B-but I also need to know whose body I was crying over in the middle of the battlefield. I need answers….”
Before any of us in the hut with Fiona could react to her words, Fiona started hyperventilating.
At that moment, I stopped wondering how she managed to carry this burden alone and wear a smile for our kids’ birthday. I stopped thinking about how the future I saw sort of matched her visions of the battlefield.
I stopped thinking entirely and dashed for Fiona as her body began to fall. Fast.
